protesters and lawmakers taking a stand against president trump's drastic actions to gut federal agencies, fire civil servants, and overhaul policy. icy mess. millions of americans from the midwest to the north east are in the path of a winter storm that could make for a treacherous morning commute. and countdown to the super bowl. extra security is in place, fans descend on the big easy as the chiefs and the eagles gear up to battle on the grid iron. good morning. i'm michael george. well, there is growing backlash against recent decisions by the trump administration. citizens and elected lawmakers are starting to fight back. democrats are in the middle of an all night talkathon on the senate floor making their case against russell vought, the president's nominee to lead the office of management and budget and a key author of project 2025, which calls for drastic cuts to medicare, medicaid, and

social security. and protesters took to the streets in cities across the country rallying against the american institutions and decimate the civil service. cbs' jarred hill joins us now with details. jarred, good morning. now, we've heard trump advisers talk about this strategy called flood the zone, where president trump takes so many drastic actions at once that his opponents and the public can't keep up. >> yeah, the idea here is folks only have so much time and energy to focus on one particular thing, michael. as the courts tackle the legal challenges to trump's orders, congressional democrats, as we saw, are stalling cabinet confirmations and looking to leverage the slim gop majority to impact legislation. all while the white house is pushing ahead with its plan to shrink the federal workforce. at the white house president donald trump continued to make good on his promise to change the federal government, signing a new executive order banning transgender athletes from women's sports.

>> from now on women's sports will be only for women. >> reporter: it's the latest in his sweeping set of overhauls by executive action. facing new pushback from the east coast to the heartland. >> we need to enforce the laws that are on the book, that you can't just simply expand your power as president simply by saying it. >> reporter: in an effort led by elon musk to shrink the federal government, today is the last day for federal workers to take a buyout, and nearly all of the 10,000 usaid employees, the agency that works to feed the world and fight disease, are set to be put on leave as early as midnight tomorrow. >> we play an integral part of foreign objectives and we do all of this with less than 1% of the national budget. >> reporter: meanwhile, president trump is standing by his idea to have the u.s. take over the gaza strip. >> everybody loves it. >> reporter: but wouldn't elaborate on the suggestion to send in american troops and permanently remove palestinians.

his administration is walking back some of the rhetoric. >> the president has made it clear they need to be temporarily relocated out of gaza for the rebuilding of this effort. again, it's a demolition site right now. >> reporter: now the president could be setting his sights on another place to make cuts -- the department of education. yesterday congressional democrats tried subpoena elon musk to testify before the house oversight committee, but republicans blocked that effort. meanwhile, trump's new attorney general is issuing reforms to the department of justice including bringing back, michael, theal federal executions. >> all right, a lot to follow. jarred hill, thanks for joining us. and president trump's idea of moving palestinians out of gaza to rebuild the ravaged territory has sparked backlash across the kbloeb. and on that tiny strip of land on the mediterranean sea 20 miles long and 7 miles wide, palestinians say they have no intention of leaving their homelands, even as it lies in

ruins. chris livesay has the story. >> reporter: hundreds of thousands of gazans since the start of had cease-fire have been moving back home. it lies in ruins, but their connection to the land is iron clad says young ismail sarsour. "we palestinians will pay no attention to what trump says about displacing us. we will remain in our land and never leave it, the land of our ancestors." trump says his vision is to turn gaza into the riveria of the middle east, but it's home to over 2 million people. exactly how he intends to move them all into neighboring countries remains unclear. but the implications conjure painful memories of when hundreds of thousands of palestinians were forced from their homes during the creation of israel. to the critics out there they would say this is ethnic cleansing. is this ethnic cleansing?

the ongoing peace process and the lives of the 79 israeli hostages who remain in hamas captivity. >> that was chris livesay reporting from tel aviv. while tens of millions of americans are under threat of ice accumulations, which could make for a dangerous morning commute. freezing rain is falling this morning over much of central and eastern pennsylvania and extending into parts of maryland and virginia. the weather will gradually change to rain from south to north. and a mix of snow and sleet will change to rain in new york city around 10:00 a.m. and in most of new england it stays all snow lingering through this evening. well, the same strain of bird flu that killed a person in louisiana last month has now infected dairy cattle in nevada. agricultural officials say it's a different strain than the one that spread to herds last year. experts say it raises wider question of bird flu and the difficulty of controlling infections with animals and people who come into contact with them.

passengers were taken off both planes. thankfully, no one was hurt. well, there was a dramatic boat rescue and troubling autopsy reports of an inmate. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the new york times" says an autopsy ruled the beating death of a shackled inmate at a state prison was homicide, according to governor kathy hochul. body cam video from december shows robert brooks being punched by prison guards while he was handcuffed on a medical exam table at the marcy correctional facility. he was pronounced dead the next day. hochul said criminal charges should be filed against those involved and they should be fired. 16 officers and two nurses were suspended without pay. two officers have resigned. "the hill" says a dozen west point cadet clubs for women and people of color were ordered to disband immediately. a memo from the military academy directed the clubs, which include the society of women engineers and the latin cultural

club to cease activity and cancel trips, meeting, and events. it comes after president trump signed an executive order halting diversity, equity, and inclusion programs throughout the federal government. all other clubs were ordered to pause activities until officials can determine if they comply with the trump directive. >> and the daytona beach news journal says dramatic video shows volusia county, florida, deputies rescue an unresponsive man on an out of control boat. crews responded to a call about a boat spinning out of control on a lake tuesday. they reached the spinning boat but were unable to get aboard at first. they waited for it to circle back around when a deputy jumped onboard and stopped it. >> looks like a diabetes kit here. >> the man was transported to shore, and thankfully he is expected to make a full recovery. ahead, back to the beginning. a legendary rock band fronted by ozzy osbourne plans to reunite for the first time in two decades. plans to reunite

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ well, the prince of darkness is back. black sabbath fans will be happy to hear that 76-year-old ozzy osbourne is reuniting with the original members of the legendary group "this summer" the concert in their hometown of birmingham, england, will be osbourne's last show ever. black sabbath hasn't performed together in 20 years. and the british postal service is honoring rock band ac/dc with a new line of stamps. the stamps mark the 50th anniversary of the band's debut album "high-voltage" in 1975.

the royal mail says it'll issue a series of eight stamps that feature some electrifying livlive performances from the band, and four additional stamps will feature album coverage from the band's greatest hits including "highway to hell." well, what's old is new again, and google is making some hiring changes. here's shanelle kaul with today's "moneywatch." stocks recovered wednesday after big tech got a boost from nvidia. the dow gained 317 points, the nasdaq was up 38, and the s&p 500 was up 23 points. google is cutting back some of its diversity, equity, and inclusion programs following in the footsteps of many other companies. it comes after president donald trump signed an executive order intended in part to pressure government contractors to end their dei efforts. the u.s. postal service halted an order to suspend incoming shipments from china. a day after announcing the suspension in the wake of

prepared. >> reporter: hundreds of armed national guard members along with thousands of federal, state, and local agents are on the ground to ensure the safety of those who visit here. >> i will tell you right now we have no specific credible threats to this event at the super bowl. >> reporter: department of homeland security secretary kristi noem visited the french quarter to see the security measures and stopped by a memorial remembering the 14 people who died during the new year's day truck ramming attack. authorities have installed more physical barriers. to protect the streets of the french quarter almost all vehicles are prohibited from this enhanced security zone. however, under state law, visitors can carry concealed weapons. >> all the statistics show where concealed carry is in place, places are a lot safer. >> reporter: the caesar's super dome in downtown new orleans will be a no drone zone. bomb sniffing dogs will scour the 70,000-seat stadium, and federal agencies are bringing in rooftop snipers. and adding to the security measures, president donald trump
