victim think it is too late to find justice. hi, i'm sara donchey. there are probably a couple of niner fans out there who we won't say rooted for the eagles, but perhaps preferred last night's super bowl outcome. even though it was a blowout, there were still some exciting moments. we'll dive into those a little later with vern. but a lot of people were talking about what happened in the middle, the halftime show, which is always a talker. had kendrick lamar fans pretty happy. he was from compton. there was a moment watched by millions of people, in which the bay area took center stage. our kelsi thorud spoke to an east bay dancer getting major recognition. >> reporter: as the world watched kendrick lamar bring the house down during sunday's super bowl halftime show, some here in the bay noticed a

familiar face performing alongside the super star. >> i feel like this is for the bay area, man. everybody, like i was like i know this is a moment where every single person in the bay area is going to be happy. all at the same time. >> reporter: ice cold, a member of the dance crew, turf beans based out of oakland, was one of a select few dancers chosen to perform with lamar. >> he was revving us up and everything, asking us if we're ready. if he's asking us are we ready, you know what i mean, we've got to go crazy. >> reporter: ice cold was featured in a group of dancers during lamar's performance that showcased turf dancing. a style of dance ice cold says has roots here in the bay. >> everybody in oakland loves turf dancing. >> reporter: for those who don't know what turf dancing is, ice cold described it as this. >> it is kind of the same, what you do in charades, you're trying to guess what people are doing. when you figure it out,
1:41 am
you get excited. so when you take that and you talk about turf dancing, it's all the same. >> reporter: to be able to perform his favorite style of dance on one of the biggest music stages in the world was a dream come true for ice cold. he told me he did it for all of his friends and family here in the bay. for all of those who came before him. >> turf dancing used to be done at house parties and sideshows. so just thinking about that all the way up into the super bowl. it's like, that's like a major thing for people to see. >> reporter: and he says he's not stopping here. his goal is to continue to show off his craft on the biggest stages. his hope, we will all see him back on our tv screens soon. >> lights and the people as well made it a moment, the environment, the atmosphere. i can't get enough of that. >> reporter: so pretty much the second the game and the season are over, there's a group of people behind the scenes getting

ready for the next super bowl. this time we have a reason to be especially excited because next year, the bay area hosts the big game at levi's stadium. the last time that happened was ten years ago. san jose mayor matt mahan was part of the group of new orleans today to host the accepting duties. those in charge of the event say this time they plan to spread the love around the bay area. >> i learned how to do this. >> reporter: actually, it was a ceremonial handoff as the responsibility for super bowl 60 shifted to the bay area host committee. >> we've been here before. in 2016, we hosted an unforgettable super bowl at levi's stadium. but there's no doubt that football, its audience, and the super bowl itself, has gotten so much bigger since then. >> reporter: super bowl 50 was estimated to bring in $250 million to the local economy, and now that figure has nearly tripled. but while the game in 2016 was played in santa clara,
1:43 am
many of the week's activities occurred in san francisco. this time, san jose mayor, matt mahan says that will change. >> we're doing things a little differently this time around. we're activating the entire region. we're showing off the technology of tomorrow. and from san francisco to san jose, where the visitors are attending the game or not, there will be something for everyone. >> reporter: the plans for what will happen and where are still being formulated. but for those who head up the silicon valley chambers of commerce says the south bay is expecting a lot more of the $600 million pie. >> like that's a big impact, right? and we hope, as a city of santa clara and south bay cities, that we take a much bigger piece of the pie than what we did the last time. 7% between us and 12% between san jose. i would like to see it, you know, upwards of the 30s and maybe if we're lucky to the 40s

as a collective south bay because the games are really here. >> reporter: it's not just the super bowl. they will plan to extend to include six fifa world cup soccer matches in 2026. >> the first time any region ever has hosted these global events in the same year. >> reporter: but one man's boom could be another man's bust. in 2016, road closures created an economic wasteland for some restaurants near the stadium. >> when game day came, it was actually like the slowest day we actually had. we closed early because it probably cost more money to keep this place open. >> reporter: this time they're hoping things will be better. michael parish works at a place called chicken meets rice. they preferred hamburgers and hot dogs. over the year, taste and their marketing efforts have changed. >> we didn't used to get with a lot of business. we have actually closed those days because they would draw so much attention away from us. but nowadays that we pick up

traction, we have five different locations now. our populator always gets a lot more business during the stadium events now. >> wow. >> yeah, so it has changed. that's a definite shift for us. >> reporter: they learned a lot since 2016. this time in the south bay, they won't mind if people leave their hearts in san francisco as long as they leave more of their money in santa clara and san jose. >> the host committee announced a partnership with tipping point, a non-profit dedicated to preventing poverty. they will lead to stable higher paying jobs after the sporting events are over. tipping point was founded by new san francisco mayor, daniel lurie, who chaired the host committee the last time the super bowl came to the bay area. we have got a lot of stuff to celebrate in the sports world these days. the nba all stars are coming here to the bay area. much sooner than the next super bowl, of course. the nba all-star game will happen at chase center this weekend. this is a first for chase center and

idea what happened to her until now. coming up in this sports alert forecast, we're going to track some rain coming our way on tuesday night. then we're really going to look ahead to thursday, which is far more impressive. look at the lines of rain that approached by the time we get to thursday morning. that looks different. widespread rain, we're probably back into some flooding concerns as well. the details on this matter. we're going to slow that down, and i'll show you what to expect from this pretty good looking rainmaker coming up. >> all right, darren, thanks. it didn't take long for eagle fans to hit the streets to celebrate their super bowl win. how things got a little unfriendly in the city of brotherly love.

the case has not been solved. deputies are asking anyone with information to help contact their tipline. there are some new questions about san francisco's police chase policy. those are being raised after a car slammed into a busy parklet. six people got hurt. it happened when officers spotted an suv that was stolen out of richmond, and the people in that suv took off, crashing into this parklet. the crash comes less than a year after city voters approved a measure to loosen the rules on when police could chase suspects. now as amanda harry explains, some business owners are asking the city to reconsider. >> i actually thought it was an earthquake or something. yeah, i did. just a big bang and smoke. >> reporter: that's what owner

of the naper tendi said it sounded like when a police chase ended with the suspect vehicle crashing into the parklet during the super bowl. it looked almost unrecognizable. the roof fell and injured six people inside. >> i heard the sirens, and the alert through the cell phones. we heard the news. >> reporter: cuevas owns donahe restaurant. they have a parklet just yards away from where the crash happened. now he's unsure what to do with it. >> will is it really worth it for us now? >> reporter: the pursuit reached speeds of 45 miles per hour. cuevas thinks the city should reevaluate proposition e, which took effect in november. allowing police to initiate a pursuit if they believe the suspect is involved in any felony or violent misdemeanor. the previous policy restricted chases to violent felonies or if police believed the suspect posed an imminent threat. >> i think in neighborhoods, it shouldn't happen, to be honest. it puts more people in danger. i

don't think that will work. and i'm sure they are going to now review that situation through this incident. >> reporter: while clean up continued on monday, supporters of prop e stay it helps improve public safety. but the supervisor for the district, jackie fielder, has concerns. i continue to have serious questions related to why sfpd needed to engage in a dangerous high-speed chase in a residential neighborhood that sent six people to the hospital and could have killed someone. sfpd has not commented on whether sunday's chase was allowed under the updated guidelines. but luke bornheimer, the executive director of streets forward, believes the crash may not have happened if it wasn't for prop e. >> this is the unfortunate result of a policy, you know, allowing police chases that decreases public safety ironically. >> reporter: despite that, bornheimer is disappointed many

businesses are rethinking their p arklets. >> i think the city should be doing more to incentivize and encourage businesses to create parklets. >> so the little bit of good news in this story, all six victims are expected to make a full recovery, which is amazing, considering all the damage this did. police say the two women inside the suv have been arrested. they both had outstanding warrants, they say. this plane, the philippine mars, was stationed in alameda during world war ii. and during the war, it mainly flew transport missions between california and hawaii. it was used to help fight forest fires. after that, the plane will eventually be housed at the peanut air and space museum in tucson. first alert weather, powered by kia. learn more at kia.com. kia, movement that inspires.

all right, we have a lot of weather to talk about. while we were in the clear for a while, we enjoyed a nice break from the rain. it seems like we've got more heading our way? >> another day tomorrow where we're in the clear, but we could see light rain as early as tomorrow night. >> it's been cold too, i should say. >> that will end after tomorrow. one more morning like that. frost advisories again tomorrow. by the time we get into wednesday, that's history. and the system gets here with widespread rain by the time we get to thursday. let's take a look at the timing on this first. the first light bands of rain are going to arrive tuesday night. and i don't want you to think that's the start of this significant rainmaker that we're talking about. here is what that looks like as we get to tuesday night. kind of a focus more so on the south bay. we pick up a tenth of an inch of rain from this. and then that kind of turns off. most of wednesday, actually, it's not really going to rain a whole lot. let's take a look at a little comparison here. if what we just watched is the tuesday night rainmaker, we're going to watch it again
1:57 am
here on the close up view, and you'll see how that grazes the south bay. there you go, tuesday night, wednesday morning. and then maybe a few light showers throughout the day as we get into wednesday. but nothing major. watch how different this looks when we get to wednesday night into thursday morning. that's what we're talking about. this is the atmospheric river. and the timing for this is going to go from wednesday night late, right through the thursday morning commute. let's play this forward and pick out a couple of important details. when you start to see these deeper red bands here, like there's one coming through, near 2:00 a.m. there is another crop of them out there. these are going to keep sweeping across the bay within this widespread band of rain. so at times you'll get heavier cells, which will add to any flooding concerns that we're going to have across the bay. primary concern for this would be roadway flooding, bay area wide, low lying intersections, that kind of thing. enough rain in a short enough period of time on your thursday morning commute that this now does become problematic on the roadways.
1:58 am
look at the time here at 6:00 a.m. so now we're really starting to drive. it's been raining for several hours at this point. and some of the heavier bands of rain are still coming in for the south bay. so we're at 7:00. now we've kind of got the aim right over the santa cruz mountains primarily with a little bit of a rain shadow for san jose, but you'll get rain for this for sure throughout thursday morning. and then the end of phase one, by the time we get to late morning, there will be more showers on thursday. i'll show you those in a second. but the bulk of the rain is coming from what we just saw, the tuesday night stuff. and here comes the thursday stuff. or i should say the very late wednesday night through thursday. and now we're looking at totals in general about an inch and a half to two inches of rain. it's the roadway flooding that's a concern bay area wide. this will also lead to a renewed concern from some of the smaller streams and creeks in the north bay. and that will become a bit problematic there. so much more on that as we get closer to it. as we clear out the system from thursday morning, this then gets us into thursday afternoon and
1:59 am
evening. take a look at the time up here. now we're looking ahead towards the second half of thursday. we get the followup. this is like the second phase through thursday. isolated showers, occasional downpours, maybe an isolated thunderstorm mixed in there as well. that doesn't really clear until like friday. we've got to go to the long range forecast to see that. the resolution is not as pretty. but the story is there. showers will remain as we go through friday. there is one other thing to look at on here. and that is the wind. remember that time frame we were looking at as we got towards thursday morning? when we were seeing some of those heavier bands of rain come through. it's at that same time when we also start to notice the wind pick up. i'll take you from now until thursday morning with the wind field over the bay. keep your eye on the time stamp there as we get to thursday morning. now we've seen the winds pick up from the south. this is what they do on the leading edge of the cold front. we're probably going to be looking at gusts near 40 miles an hour along the coast.
2:00 am
remember, this is when some of the heavier rain is coming through. this is your thursday morning when you're getting the heavier cells of rain. we could have 40 miles an hour gusts along the coast and a 25 to 30 miles an hour breeze for most of the rest of the bay. that's a windy enough day that it will have an impact. maybe some branches, broken debris, that kind of thing. no wind advisory issued by the weather service yet. but they've been talking about the possibility. we'll let you know if they do it. there is your rain on thursday. friday, leftover showers, then we're done. the remainder through the seven-day forecast with some light rain on sunday, vern. doesn't look big. we'll cross that bridge when we get there. >> all right, expertly delivered. straight ahead in sports, what is the price of winning? and the warriors, well, they've gone in and done it again.
