president trump welcomes an american newly released from a russian prison. what this could mean for the future of ukrainian peace talks. winter wallop. a procession of storms sweeps across 20 states. we'll have the latest on the snow and ice impacting 80 million people. and best in show. after three long dog years, monty the giant schnauzer finally bests them all. good morning. i'm michael george. well, we start with another busy day at 1600 pennsylvania avenue. president trump met with jordan's king abdullah over the future of the palestinian people. trump also signed another executive order alongside elon musk over his doge government overhaul plans. and late last night, the president met with newly released american teacher marc fogel who's been detained inside russia for more than three years.

cbs' jarred hill is here with the details. good morning. let's talk about this prisoner release. certainly good news, but has the president said yet what the u.s. gave up in exchange? >> reporter: fogel last night was essentially in shock it seemed after getting released from a russian prison. there was nothing that president trump said about the deal itself. he pretty much shied away there the details. it was, though, a promise that trump made to fogel's 95-year-old mother over the summer when she spoke to him at a rally in butler, pennsylvania, site of the attempt on his life. after 3.5 years in russian captivity, american marc fogel is back on u.s. soil. >> i feel like the luckiest man on earth right now. >> reporter: president trump welcomed the pennsylvania schoolteacher to the white house last night. >> great to have you back. you're going to have a great life. >> reporter: in 2021 he was arrested at a moscow airport for carrying a small amount of marijuana for back pain.

the white house hasn't offered deals on what it gave up in exchange but said it was a sign of goodwill in dealings with ukraine. >> not like deals you've seen over the years. they were very fair. >> reporter: during a meet with king abdullah trump doubled down on the proposal for the u.s. to take over and redevelop gaza, a plan that calls for palestinians to be removed with the no right to return. >> we're going hold it. we're going to cherish it. >> reporter: king abdullah posted on social media, rebuilding gaza without displacing the palestinians and addressing the dire humanitarian situation should be the priority for all. meanwhile, in the oval office, elon musk, head of the president's department of government efficiency or doge, defended efforts to cut government jobs and slash federal spending. >> we are moving fast. we will make mistakes, but we will fix them quickly. >> reporter: the trump administration is facing lawsuits challenging doge's cuts and its access to sensitive government files.

you know, speaking of those cuts, one day after usaid's inspector general reported that the cuts to the agency put about half a billion dollars in food assistance at risk of spoiling, he was fired in an email. last night president trump hinted another american being held in captivity overseas could be released today, although no specifics on what. back to you. >> all right. jarred hill, thank you. turning now to the middle east and the fragile cease-fire. israel threatened to resume the war after hamas said it would delay the next release of hostages it holds in gaza. and as that truce holds stall is -- holding israel in the west bank. chris livesay reports from the west bank town of jenin. >> reporter: you might think this is gaza -- [ gunfire ] but this is the occupied west bank. and jenin is the epicenter of violence. our journey was an odyssey of closed roads and checkpoints.

as soon as we arrived, israeli military vehicles sped past us. we just got turned around from that intersection. we were warned any step further and we could get shot. for weeks the israeli army has been leveling what they deem terrorist infrastructure. like in this controlled like in this controlled demolition of 23 evacuated buildings. targeting explosives laboratories, weapons, and observation posts. it started after hamas' terror attacks last month including one that killed three israeli civilians. but palestinians we spoke to fear in reality the operation is an unspoken part of president trump's development proposal. first, move them out of gaza, then move them out of the west bank. pushing the palestinians across the jordan river and into jordan, so israelis can live there. israeli bulldozers are plowing this street, making it easier for military vehicles to access.

but just impossible for regular palestinians. israel says dozens of terrorists have been killed, but there were civilian deaths, too. laila was just 2. her favorite game was hide and seek. the israeli military said they were positioned outside her house looking for terrorists and warned people to come outside. when no one answered, they followed procedure and opened fire, they said. four bullet holes, a bloody towel and empty bed are all that's left. laila was hit in the back of her head, says her grandmother. we carried her outside and asked the soldiers why did you kill a child? >> i am sorry. >> reporter: you said "i am sorry." her mother kissed her goodbye, and her grandfather carried her tiny body to her grave. chris livesay, cbs news, tel aviv.

back home more than 80 million people from the central plains to the east coast are getting hit with the latest in a procession of winter storms, making for some dangerous driving conditions. winter storm warnings stretched from kansas and missouri all the way to the great lakes. up to eight inches of snow could fall in some areas. there are also winter storm warnings throughout the mid-atlantic states. more than ten inches of snow have fallen in parts of virginia and west virginia, and state police in virginia say they responded to 700 car accidents yesterday. federal safety officials are investigating that deadly crash involving a private jet on a scottsdale runway. the focus may center on the landing gear. cbs' kris van cleave reports. >> reporter: this dramatic video of a lear jet landing at the scottsdale airport monday afternoon will be at the center of a national transportation safety board investigation as it appears to show the left main landing gear collapsing, sending the plane veering off the runway before slamming into a parked

gulf stream 200. a team of investigators is working to understand what went wrong. >> maintain altitude and go around. we had an emergency. >> reporter: firefighters were on scene within a minute, but the collision killed one person. two others were rushed to the hospital with critical injuries. a third was transported by paramedics with non-life-threatening injuries. and another person was evaluated at the scene but walked away. >> our thoughts and prayers for the individuals on the aircraft. it's certainly a tragedy that occurred. ♪ >> reporter: the leer 35a is owned by motley crue lead singer vince neil, but he was not on board. built in 1989, it was coming from austin. preliminary flight data shows last reported speed at around 63 miles per hour as it veered off the runway. looking at the jet you can see how it came to rest at an angle, another sign of the rear left landing gear collapse. one of the things the ntsb is certainly going to look at is

the maintenance history of this airplane to see if that yields any clues as to why the gear would fail like it did. after a trouble could two weeks of aviation accidents that have killed 85 people, starting with the deadly midair collision in washington, d.c., more unanswered questions for ntsb investigators to unravel. kris van cleave, cbs news, scottsdale, arizona. and security camera video captured the moment a small plane crashed close to homes in new hampshire. the plane came down yesterday in some trees near an airfield in northampton. the pilot, who was the only one on board, amazingly walked away without a scratch. he said the plane lost power as he was about to approach the runway, and it stalled about 50 feet above the ground. it went down about 100 yards short of the runway. cases of the contagious bacterial infection whooping cough are on the rise in the u.s. at least 360 cases were reported

"the boston globe" says in a first of its kind case, a western massachusetts cannabis farm is suing a neighboring farm over pesticides. river valley growers in hatfield claims that norse farms, which grows berries and root vegetables, ruined thousands of pound of marijuana in 2022 by spraying chemicals that hurt its crop. it said it was prevented from growing marijuana in 2023 and 2024 it estimates loss of $17 million. norse farms done respond when asked for a comment. "the kansas city star" says a local sports reporter who died in new orleans while covering the super bowl may have been drugged by a suspect who's now in custody. adan manzano, sports reporter for telemundo in kansas city,
