jarred hill is here with details. good morning. let's start with the court fight over federal jobs. this looks like a win for the president and setback for labor unions. >> reporter: to be specific here, the judge didn't say anything about the legality of this buyout program but did rule the unions themselves don't have standing to sue. they're not directly impacted. federal employees are. as that fight comes to an end, president trump signaled an end to the fighting between russia and ukraine is more important than ukraine reclaiming land that russia has taken. >> i think they have to make peace. >> reporter: president donald trump says negotiations will begin immediately toward ending russia's war with ukraine. at the swearing-in of his new director of national defense, -- national defense tulsi gabbard, the president said he spoke to leaders of both countries on the phone yesterday and told reporters he plans to meet face to face with russian president vladimir putin. >> we expect that he'll come here and i'll go there, and we're going to meet also probably in saudi arabia the

first time. >> reporter: president trump was noncommittal on a sit-down with ukraine's president, volodymer zelenskyy. zelenskyy later said that he and trump had a good conversation adding that he believes america's power can pressure putin toward peace. but in a big shift from the previous administration, the u.s. signaled a reversal on support of ukraine's bid for nato membership, and now says the country may have to give up territory to russia. >> we must start by recognizing that returning to ukraine's pre-2014 borders is an unrealistic expectative. -- objective. >> reporter: at home the administration says nearly 75,000 federal workers had already signed up for the buyout which offers full pay and benefits through september to those who voluntarily leave their positions. the white house, though, says that offer is now off the table for anyone who hasn't already signed up. worth noting that the white

house and some advisers signalled this program isn't just about economic efficiency but getting rid of what they believe is a politically adversarial federal work force. meanwhile, back to the foreign fighting, overnight ukraine says russia attacked them with 140 drones, 85 were struck down. back to you. >> all right. jarred hill, thank you. former democratic congresswoman and military veteran tulsi gabbard is now the nation's director of national intelligence. president trump looked on as she was sworn in yesterday during an oval office ceremony. earlier she was confirmed by the senate 52-48. the only republican voting against her was former majority leader mitch mcconnell who said she brings unnecessary risks to the position based on her sympathetic comments toward russia and syria. robert f. kennedy jr. is one step closer to becoming secretary of health and human services. the senate voted to limit debate and advance his nomination in a party-line vote 53-47.

>> president trump has corrected -- directed this to stop. and if you don't comply with federal law, we will hold you accountable. we did it in illinois, strike one. strike two is new york. and if you are a state not complying with federal law, you're next, get ready. >> hochul called it a publicity-driven lawsuit and said new york is not backing down. u.s. officials say belarus has released three people including an american and belarusian journalist who was detained for more than three years. u.s. funded radio free europe radio liberty identified one of those freed as reporter andre kuznechyk. he was convicted for allegedly being part of an extremist group. he was reunited with his family yesterday in lithuania. the name of the freed american and why that person was detained was not disclosed by the white house. back home eggs are leading the rise in grocery prices, and

suddenly they're scarce. lana zak talked to an iowa farmer who has a waiting list for eggs. >> reporter: outside of des moines it's lavon griffieon's 123-year-old farm. seven generations of the family have raised cows, sheep, and hens. these are the girls. >> these are the girls. >> reporter: on a summer day they will lay 35 to 40 eggs, but in the winter the average is about 17. the decline comes as egg producers are struggling to keep up with demand. eggs are in short supply as bird flu has taken a toll on tens of millions of chickens. some prices have topped $10 a dozen. how has it been with the egg shortage for you? >> we're out about two weeks in advance. >> reporter: this is the egg fridge. lavon put up a bible verse about thou shalt not hoard. and each carton reserved. as egg prices have soared, she's kept the prices the same, $5 a

dozen. making their own feed costs down and minimizes outside deliveries reducing the risk of bird flu spreading to their farm. and these eggs have an additional benefit -- >> when you get two dozen eggs, you know they're fresh. we're standing right there waiting. >> reporter: the usda requires that as soon as a single case of bird flu is found on a farm the entire flock needs to be eliminated. and when you're talking about large commercial farms that have hundreds of thousands if not a million birds, the impact to the supply chain becomes immediate. lana zak, cbs news, iowa. two crew members safely ejected from a navy jet before it crashed into san diego bay. security camera video shows the plane plummeting into the water yesterday. the two men on board were taken to a hospital. they're now in stable condition. the navy says it happened during what's known as a go-around maneuver where the plane lands

"the oregonian" says the roof of a high school gym collapsed

under the weight of 700,000 pounds of snow. video shows the roof at north medford high school starting to sink tuesday and collapse moments later sending dust and materials into the air. officials noticed a crack in a support beam on the roof last friday and closed the gym and surrounding area to students as a precaution. crews removed and melted some of the snow on the roof. no one was hurt in the collapse, and students were sent home early. "the florida times union" says a former college basketball player was charged with murdering his mother. the jacksonville sheriff's office says eric cobb was arrested after his 51-year-old mother was found dead and wrapped in blankets and towels in the backyard of their home tuesday. investigators say the mother had multiple gunshot wounds and an ar-style rifle and handgun were fund in the house. cobb played for the university of south carolina for one season, and then the university of connecticut in the 2017-2019 season.
