now at 11:00 -- >> it is impressive, a lot of water very fast. >> -- another strong storm hits the bay and this time heavy rain forced more evacuations. >> i'm just trying to do anything in my power to be able to save my home. plus how back-to-back storms have some very unlucky people feeling exhausted. and one of the best ever to

step on a basketball court is back in the bay, why she says she's not partaking in one of the most watched events for all-star weekend. and a kayaker is swallowed whole by a whale, what happened immediately afterwards. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hello. i'm sara donchey. mother nature was pretty busy today in the bay area between rain, wind, and earthquakes. she gave us plenty to talk about tonight. we'll get to it all. first of all, though, the storm packed a punch. even if you didn't get a lot of rain, you probably heard the wind whipping. the problems came for people along bay area waterways. rivers were rising like the san lorenzo river in santa cruz county. there were evacuation orders for that area earlier, but they have expired. the sheriff's office issued evacuation warnings this evening for the santa cruz coast. those cover the rio del mar and beach drive areas. issues really started early this morning as
11:02 pm
paul told us they would. this was flooding on 580 in oakland where several drivers had to navigate their way through a couple inches of water, which can be deceptively dangerous. there were rough driving conditions all around the bay today. chp responded to crashes and spinouts like this one on 280 in san mateo county. downpours overwhelmed storm drains. wren avenue in gilroy was underwater. our crews spotted at least one person trying to clear that drain out. it was really hard to keep up with today. >> yeah. >> i think it happened as we expected, but some people got more than others. >> they did. it was pretty well distributed across the bay area. a lot of times we see a lot of rain in the north bay and hardly any in the santa clara valley. everybody picked up at least an inch of rain. we'll look at the radar replay over the last 24 hours because this time yesterday we were tracking that first batch of heavy rain that was making its way across the bay area. that continued through most of the night. as it moved
11:03 pm
to the east this morning, though, we did get into a little break for a few hours. that helped allow the first wave of rain kind of soak into the ground. the ground was still saturated. then the next wave of rain moved in. once that moved east we got into the pattern we're in now with off and onshowers, heavier downpours, the showers gradually becoming fewer and farther between. that's the trend through the rest of tonight. you can see widespread activity on the eastern half of the bay area and not as much to the west. that trend will continue through early tomorrow morning. we still have a number of flood advisories in effect, especially for the delta and points west and then a couple river flood warnings around the creeks in central sonoma county. some of these will be reissued through tonight, especially sonoma county. the flood advisories farther inland will be allowed to expire. we're still under a flood watch through 10:00 p.m.
11:04 pm
saturday that. should cancel early because as we head through tonight, additional flooding will become very unlikely. we still have to track the wind energy with this system. it's blustery now. there's a wind advisory that remains in effect through 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. in fact, let's track the current winds as they stand now and the sustained winds aren't a problem, mostly in the 10 to 20-mile-an-hour range. the higher gusts are mostly in the 30 to 35-mile-an-hour range. if this trend continues, hopefully we can cancel that wind advisory early. we'll track that through tonight. calmer weather is around the corner, details coming up in a few minutes. >> we kind of need that. thank you. we introduced you to a man in the north bay a couple nights ago who dealt with a world of problems when a clogged drain flooded his backyard, then his house. our kenny choi went back to marinwood to check in on him as he tried to prevent even more

damage today to his dream home. >> reporter: dara's home is still susceptible to more flooding. >> just trying to do anything in my power to be able to save my home. >> reporter: the last storm brought massive amounts of water into his family's home in marinwood. he's keeping a close eye on the storm drain that failed. >> you request see there's bodies of water basically forming over there. >> reporter: he hoped the county department of public works would help with debris cleanup to prevent clogged drains but hired a crew wednesday ahead of the storm. >> as this water continues to accumulate, it would have washed these sticks and broken trees into the culvert which would have been stuck again. >> reporter: besides flooding, landslides and mudslides continue to pose problems for residents. tarps cover a hillside that gave way last week, pushing massive amounts of mud into this apartment complex
11:06 pm
unit on sir francis drake boulevard in fairfax. marin county fire's prepositioning where they can for potential landslides and other emergencies. >> if you do see cracks that are developing with in the hillside, it's not something that you want to just go and deal with on your own. you want to call in specialized resources for that recommendation on what needs to get done. >> reporter: as for dara's situation, it's an hour-by-hour assessment of what's next. you're doing this every couple hours? >> just to maintain so it doesn't overflow and damage all the hard work we've done with the restoration. >> reporter: dara says his home insurance denied his claim and he never tried to purchase flood insurance since his home is not in a flood zone, but he's thankful for the help his family received from his community. >> my wife and i are really touched by everyone's support. >> you got to feel so bad for that guy, what a terrible situation. we wish him well. a

lot of us got heavy rain today, not just in one area, and that included the east bay today. people in san leandro were keeping an eye on a hillside that's been an issue in the past. our kara st. cyr was there. >> that's where the houses are in danger. >> reporter: peter vannustin is no stranger to the extremes of mother nature. large mudslides devastated the hillside two years ago, a reminder of what was and what could be. >> we had an earthquake today and you just don't know. you don't know what's the thing that's going to sort of trigger something like this. >> reporter: public works refreshed the tarp ahead of today's weather, but vannustin said he can still see evidence of the slide's slow movement. >> this seam was together and now it's pulling apart. this is
11:08 pm
getting wider and wider and so everything is kind of sliding downhill. >> reporter: overly saturated grounds and flooding are a concern for neighborhoods like his that battle the rain every season. san leandro mayor juan gonzalez says the city is keeping a close eye on trouble spots like these during thursday's storm. >> we monitor for movement of the soil and movement of the tarping because we want to make sure that to the extent that more rain, more water, can get in there, that we're covering it up quickly. >> reporter: while the rain is tapering off, the oakland fire department is still concerned about the wind. it's already caused moderate damage. heavy gusts brought this large tree crashing down on the street, blocking oncoming traffic near skyline. a fire captain for oakland fire department says aged trees specifically are causing headaches. >> we were first alerted to this incident by a passer-by that suggested a vehicle almost got struck. we had the same type of incident last week with a monterey pine, one of these 40-foot trees at the end of their life and starting to drop,
11:09 pm
especially with the wet weather coming through. >> reporter: trees also create debris that can lead to flooding in low lying areas like this one at shepard canyon road in oakland. public works officials are pushing debris out of this gulch to contain the overflow. drivers need to be vigilant of low lying and wooded areas. >> keep an eye on them very closely. have a go bag ready. we're concerned about power lines coming down as well. be very cautious while you're out and about today. >> reporter: van nustin says his fingers are crossed that this is the last atmospheric river to hit the area for a while. >> remember we said mother nature was really dishing a lot out today. it wasn't just the storm. we had a swarm of earthquakes along the hayward fault. four quakes were centered around hayward and castro valley, the smallest a 2.5 magnitude in pleasant hill. the strongest was a 3.7 around 2:00 this afternoon. quite a few people felt that one. people felt shaking in san francisco, berkeley, other parts of the bay
11:10 pm
area, too. while this kind of activity is normal along faults and these are not large earthquakes, a seismologist with uc berkeley says it is a reminder that the hayward fault is capable of a lot more. >> we really don't know whether these are leading up to an earthquake or they're just a stand-alone swarm. we won't know until there is, if there is, a bigger earthquake later. we cannot predict earthquakes in any way, shape, or form. nba all-stars aren't the only ones making their way to the bay area. >> so very happy to be here and knowing how it's going to impact a lot of these families here. >> why a wnba champion and bay area native paid a visit to oakland today. two major events, thousands of visitors crowding into the city, how san francisco police say they'll keep everyone safe. you know how in pinocchio someone gets swallowed by a whale? fairytales do come true because it happened to this guy, though we're willing to bet
11:11 pm
he'd call it more of a nightmare.

it wasn't just us that got some bad weather today. it was a bad day to be on the road up in oregon. snow and ice caused a huge pileup on i-84. at least 20 cars were involved. look at this drone video from above just to get a sense of how just huge
11:14 pm
this pileup was. four people were taken to the hospital. thankfully, they were not seriously hurt. three miles of the interstate had to be shut down to deal with all this. while we have been getting heavy rain, up in the sierra there has been a lot of snow that brought traffic to a grinding halt on i-80 near truckee. several big rigs parked on both sides of the road waiting out this storm. we talked to people on the side of the road who told us this is not their first time traveling in the snow. >> my dad's been training for 35 years, so i get my experience from him. it's a good feeling calming people down knowing they can drive safe. first alert weather powered by kia. learn more at kia.com. kia, movement that inspires. >> this is why i think you say so often okay, don't drive up the mountains in a snowstorm. i've been stuck one time i think in nevada and it is so miserable.
11:15 pm
>> it's awful. >> you're just sitting there. >> you're not comfortable. >> it's not comfortable. >> you don't know when you're going to get out. it's nerve wracking. you don't know if somebody will come flying up behind you and plow into you stuck on the side of the road. >> i'm not like a calm optimistic thinker. >> what? >> it's not good to be in that situation. >> let the road crews do their thing and then head up there. we'll have the toyota tahoe report in a couple of minutes. we're starting to see the showers become more sparse. there's still pockets of heavier rain moving through the east bay, specifically contra costa and alameda counties, but that's moving farther off to the east and farther off to the west there's not as much new lining up. in terms of additional rain, we're not talking about a whole lot. speaking of what has already accumulated, here are the totals from the storm system in a handful of locations around the
11:16 pm
bay area. on the low end, over 1 1/2 inches of rain in san jose. that will put a nice dent in the rainfall deficit you've been running in the santa clara valley. for ben lomond approaching 6 inches of total rainfall, over 4 inches of rain for kentfield, otherwise generally in the 2 to 3-inch range which falls generally into the range of what we did expect out of this particular storm system. the fact it mostly fell in the course of 24 hours was a little bit too much at the same time. let's look at futurecast through the rest of tonight. it shows the pattern that we expect. the showers are still out there, but not as many. they're not going to be as heavy. don't be surprised if you run through one during the morning commute, but it shouldn't impact the drive much and past 9:00 or 10:00 in the morning just a couple patches of mist and drizzle, should see a mix of clouds and sunshine by tomorrow afternoon. this system will be pretty much done with us other than some still breezy conditions. let's go back to the monitor here and talk about
11:17 pm
how much additional rain you might expect even if one of those heavier showers manages to camp out overhead. we're still talking about a 0.1 of an inch or less in most communities through tonight into early tomorrow, same thing for the southern end of the bay area. if you really overachieve, one forecast model is trying to paint a couple tenths of an inch of rain. as we return to the floor map and talk about how much wind damage we had, not a lot of damage reported, but had a 55-mile-an-hour gust on the sunol ridge, a 62-mile-an-hour gust earlier today at sfo. for the most part, the wind gusts were in the 30 to 45-mile-an-hour range. that could have been a lot worse. we anticipated the potential for more 50-mile-an-hour gusts. the fact we didn't get that is good news, about but it's still going to be breezy through the rest of tonight. let's return
11:18 pm
to the maps on our monitor and track the wind gusts through tonight into tomorrow. we'll start an hour ago when the forecast model landed. everything is diminishing through the day tomorrow, still breezy during the afternoon, 20 to 30-mile-an-hour gusts but becoming much calmer tomorrow night into saturday. in terms of snow in the sierra, it's still piling up. most of what's going to add up on top of what's fallen will happen tonight through sunrise friday, just a few inches of additional accumulation during the daylight hours, but the winter storm warning goes until 10:00 p.m. it will just take some time for the road crews to catch up given the sheer volume of snow that has added up over the past 48 hours or so. let's look at the seven-day forecast. we have a chance of showers sunday and there is a chance on wednesday as well, but that's even lower. we're leaving the raindrops out of the tube for now. it looks like we'll warm up to the low to mid-60s by tuesday, wednesday, and thursday, but after today no more significant rain chances headed our way. we get to settle into an
11:19 pm
atmospheric river-free rain pattern maybe through the end of february. >> we need it. thank you. all-star weekend festivities are underway in the bay area with the nba's biggest stars on their way to san francisco. mayor daniel lurie and the warriors cut the ribbon today to open up all-star alley on powell street. >> three, two, one. >> those are some deep voices. we need more enthusiasm! the mayor has been enthusiastic. he said he's excited to show nba fans a different side of san francisco and you had better believe that he and everyone in charge here is hoping everyone is on their best behavior. all-star weekend is happening at the same time as the massively popular lunar new year parade. tens of thousands of people are expected in the city for both events. sfpd is going to be very busy. they say they're ready for anything. >> big events don't scare us because we know what the city can do. >> maintaining patrols, maintaining safe passage for people, making sure we are

11:21 pm
because it's like i don't got to rush to get it done at school. >> reporter: kaniyah richardson was thankful for her new laptop and she was also starstruck by the wnba champion. >> when they told me she was going to be here, i wasn't really believing it. she's really here and i was like i'm going to ask her to sign my shoes. >> reporter: the kids here are all part of eoydc, an organization that works to give them the skills they need to succeed in life. >> these kids are the future. so i want to instill resilience and power into them. >> reporter: amar kareem was part of the program as a child and is now one of the youth advisers. he feels giving kids the tools they need to succeed will go a long way in achieving their goals. >> i really want to inspire other black young men like me to take their education seriously and take their opportunities seriously and not waste it on stuff that's temporary.
