bay area but now things are dying down as we head into president's day weekend. within a couple of minutes i was up to my ankles in water in the house. >> reporter: the rain may be gone but dozens of people spent the day cleaning up after flooding. now the mayor is promising to take action. the dumping of rain is also causing a big problem in southern california where people are still recovering from last month's wildfires. good evening, oh boy, a lot of excitement around the bay area tonight as the nba takes over. about 200,000 enthusiastic fans are in town for the all star weekend. the center of it all, chase center where the league's best players will take the court on sunday. even if you aren't going to the game, there are still a lot of other fun things to check out. back to our kelsey thor is at the center

where it's all about the fans and taking some shots at the hoop, hey kelcy. >> it's really an experience inside the masconi center. and what better way to kick off all star weekend than for fans to go in and experience what it is to be an nba star, here at the cross over center. ever wonder what it feels like to dunk. >> or to hear directly from your hero about who his hero is. >> i think the unsung hero is my mom as well. my mom did a lot for me. she prepared me mentally before games and everything. >> reporter: these are just some of the things fans are able to experience at nba all star cross

over. the event has taken over masconi center, giving fans an up close and personal with their idols. >> we saw anthony towns. i was like hi cat, hey cat, look at me. >> reporter: thousands of fans packed in on day one of the event, we met one man who drove cross country just for a chance to get players to autograph his original basketball hall of fame sign. >> i drove all the way out from connecticut. so that i could get photographs of the 190 hall of famers. >> reporter: fans got a chance to see a 3d basketball made by wilson. >> it's made from recyclable material. >> reporter: the experience

offering a little bit of everything for both the basketball obsessed and the casual fan. many told us it's been the perfect way to kick off what's expected to be a star studded weekend. >> it's been great. 10 out of 10 it's my first time, first year. >> and you know, juliet i don't know if i would call myself basketball obsessed but i definitely enjoyed it. there's a ton of things to do in the fan experience there. if you weren't able to come out today, don't worry. they will be opened all weekend long tomorrow and on sunday. now one thing i did get to do while we were in there is our 11:00 p.m. anchor sarah donci also showed up on her own for fun to shoot some shots there. so her and i decided to have a bit of a friendly competition to see who could do better i guess at shooting and making the most baskets. if you have watched me over the years you know i talk probably too much about the fact that i played basketball in high school. so i was really trying

to show off some of my skills earlier. but juliet, i didn't get a warm up. i didn't get to stretch. i was wearing my blazer while i was shooting, i'm going put that out there before we show you the video. >> you're setting the table with excuses. but i'm glad it was friendly fire. take a look at this drone show. this is the coolest over the san francisco bay for all star weekend. the show honors michael jordan who wore the iconic number 23 jersey. and the all star celebrity game kicked off at oakland arena this afternoon it was featuring stars such as two chains and kai senot and drewsky as well as matt barnes and barry bonds and jerry rice coached the two celebrity teams. but team bonds ended up scoring the win 66-55. all right, we'll take you across the bay. the best young

talent in the league including warriors brandon pojenski and trace jackson davis are facing off at the chase center in san francisco. and the all star game is just part of a trifecta of events this weekend. and oh yes, today is valentine's day. tomorrow san francisco holds its lunar new year event. the biggest event outside of asian. >> it looks like the weather is going to be much more cooperative than it has been for the first half of february. this recent sequence of rainstorms has helped us to at least chip away at the rainfall deficit that we've been running for inland east bay locations and in the santa clara valley. but still short of what's normal to this point in the water here which begins on october 1st in both livermore and san jose. pretty close to normal in san francisco. slightly on the positive side with this latest sequence of storms. now at 116% of normal and of course the

north bay has really been getting system after system even when you're in that dry stretch in january. you're running a surplus even through that fourth week of dry weather. you're not 177% of rainfall to this point in the season. talk about the weekend forecast, it looks like we're going to be dry for the chinese new year parade tomorrow. a lot of cloud cover over head but temperatures won't be a problem. dipping down into the upper 40s and low 50s during the evening. and the weekend as a whole is looking pretty good. there is a chance of a shower on sunday. but it's only about a 1 in three chance mainly north of i80. if anybody sees a shower it'll be very brief. we'll look at the full 7 day forecast which includes a big warm up for parts of the bay area late next week. it's coming up in a few minutes. the rain may be gone but in san francisco dozens of people spent the day cleaning up after their apartments were flooded when a near by creek overflowed. this isn't the first time. the

city is now searching for answers. >> i tried to pick up what i could. save what i could within a couple of minutes i was up to my ankles in water in my house. >> reporter: dereck glascoe says he felt helpless stopping the water coming into his apartment. >> i started putting down towels and realized it wasn't going to stop anything. then i started putting things on top of my bed. by the time, i saw the water was seeping through the walls and it overtook the whole house after that. >> reporter: it will likely take weeks to dry out and repair. san jose officials say the cause of the flood is under investigation but appears to be a case of

debris flow including logs that jammed up the narrow creek causing it to change course and flow into the apartments. >> it's still the case that things can happen during prolonged winter storms. you can have trees fall into the waterway, other debris get captured. small mud slide and very quickly have the creek over top the bank. we can't always prevent that. we do our very best. i think we can prolong. >> for now, derek and his two daughters who live here are trying to count their losses and save as much as they can. >> i haven't heard anything about how long or what their

plans are to fix it. i'm sure they're going to have to do the carpet. i'm sure they're trying to get their ducks in order. >> reporter: with atmospheric rivers are occurring more often, it's a question on when it will happen again. >> this is the eden fire burn zone in altadena. you can see cars just buried in mud. the sight leaving many residents stunned. >> it's unbelievable. so much devastation and now we have the mud slides on top of that. so it's just surprising. >> reporter: and this is what caused the mess. you can see rainwater and debris just pouring down the hillsides during the thick of the storm. and some people even had to be rescued. taking you to malibu, the debris was so strong a

firefighters suv got swept off t. driver was fortunately able to get out and taken to the hospital with minor injuries. up next, basketball stars and their families roll up their sleeves to give back to the bay area. >> matt lively will join

all right all star weekend is more than just about the game of basketball it's also about the impact players can have on their community. this year, players were sent out to do good across the bay area. at the san francisco marin food bank volunteers helped pack meals for more than 50,000 households in the community. we spoke with warriors center looney about why he wanted to come out and help.

well the storm may have passed by the beach is still getting slammed. the closures have come as a huge disappointment to some. >> i'm a little disappointed i wanted to see it, so i'm going to have to come back. >> i hear it's because of the weather. but right now we're having some nice sunshine, so hopefully it'll reopen soon. >> it is expected to reopen soon. the closures are set to be lifted tomorrow morning. >> let's talk about the weather here in the bay area. what's happening to us and paul is here to fill us in. take us through the rough patches. >> now we're going to settle into a calmer pattern through next week and the end of february. just long range data that just flipping the switch as we get past the midpoint of february. happy valentine's day. brought the valentine's day trousers. >> and you brought the shoes. >> maroon for the beginning of

college basketball season. very romantic. >> oh, maroon. >> let's look at what we have coming up. as we head into the weekend, it also happens to be president's day weekend. a mix of sunshine and clouds. a possibility of a couple of showers on sunday. we'll look at it on futurecast momentarily. then we drive out for president's day and warm up as we head into next week. temperatures looking toasty by february standards by the end of next week. switches perspectives over the bay bridge. otherwise still running in the low to mid-50s. 57 in oakland. one of the warmer spots by a pretty wide margin. with clear skies over head and the winds dying down. nothing to stir the atmosphere around. the temperatures are going to fall out pretty quickly as we head through the rest of tonight. let's take a look at the forecast lows. by early tomorrow morning, more inland spots are going to be down into the 30s. around napa, petaluma and santa rosa. even some upper 30s along

the coast. these clear skies, these clear nights with calm winds allow that to happen. whatever warmth we had today just radiating off into space. in the low 40s but just barely clinging to 40 degrees with temperatures into the mid- to upper 30s farther into the santa clara valley. everyone the cooler spots bounce back mostly into the lower 60s inland. temperatures are going to reach up into the 60 degrees. let's see if we can get that rebooted and turned back on. it's always fun when this happens live on television. temperatures are going to stay in the neighborhood of 60 degrees from the north baby tomorrow afternoon. -- north bay tomorrow afternoon. futurecast does have the potential for a few showers into the bay area on sunday. we're going through saturdaying night. you see those showers running through the north bay but kind of falling apart as they try to make more progress deer into the bay area. this would be very light activity if it happens at all. our rain chances are going to be one in

three for sunday. but be flexible with any outdoor plans. i wouldn't cancel anything. this is definitely the most aggressive forecast model in terms of our rain chances. we will just take it as it goes on sunday. it's really the only significant chance we have in the 7 day forecast and beyond that, things are looking pretty dry. farther down the line as well. as we look at the 6 to 10 day outlook from the climate prediction center. we're thinking about changing things. we've been so dry. now we show a strong signal to zero rainfall. drier than normal conditions at least. the outlook takes us through the end of february. continues that trend of dry conditions for the next couple of weeks and then we'll see what the month of march decides to bring us. this rainy season so far it has been a case of all or nothing in these two or three week stretches. we'll start with inland parts of the bay area. where temperatures are going to warm up to a greater degree by the end of next week. wednesday, thursday and friday into the mid- to upper 50s with

some of the warmest spots getting to 70 degrees by thursday and friday. and that's well above normal for mid- to late february. temperatures close tore the bay. also warming up next week just not quite as much into the middle portion of the 60s. but we'll take it this time of year. that one chance of showers on sunday is really the only significant rain chance we have in the 7 day forecast and it's really not all that significant again just be flexible with any outdoor plans and we'll be here to keep you updated as we head through the upcoming weekend. over all just kind of nice to enjoy a nice stretch of weather, fairly calm stretch of weather on sunday as we head into the holiday weekend. >> sounds wonderful. all right, thank you. up next bay area couples how are they celebrating valentine's day. some are saying i do. we're going to give you a look at the ceremonies up next.

look at that, san francisco city hall always a popular destination to get married but today valentine's day it was definitely the love shack. about 250 couples got hitched in the stately city center. even mayor leary got in on the action. he personally officiated two weddings this morning. >> it makes you fall in love all over again. i love this city. >> it's awesome. go san francisco, go love. >> reporter: it's also a big day for the san francisco flower mart. if you waited until the last minute to buy a valentine's day gift. you're not alone. mastercard tracked sales and san francisco topped the list. san jose came in fourth. you still have some time. thanks for watching us. the news continues at 8:00 on
