from cbs news bay area, this is the morning edition. a busy holiday weekend in san francisco bringing hopes of a bounce back for the city. we hear from business owners were banking on a huge economic boost . the nba all-star weekend is in full swing with the big game happening today. we will look at the all-star events around the bay. one of the largest lunar new year celebrations happened here in san francisco. we have all the highlights from the chinese new year parade celebrating the year of the snake. we locked out on the weather yesterday. it was gorgeous. little chilly but at least there is not rain like parts of the bay area this morning and i will let you know where you need to grab the umbrella and where it will remain dry coming up in a bit to good morning and thank you for starting a day with us today. it's sunday, the viewer 16th and i am kelsi thorud. zoe mintz our meteorologist is here to start us off and you say rain potentially. >> tracking rain and north bay communities are currently

dealing with the rain. for rain today but not nearly as strong as the system we saw thursday. thursdays system with the strong winds and flooding and the really gloomy conditions. today is not going to be like that. i want to take a step back and show you are what we have seen. this is from the first to the 15th of the month, february, over nine inches nearly 10 inches of rain in santa rosa. well over a foot of rainfall in healdsburg and even in san francisco we saw half a foot of rain just in the first 15 days of the month and that puts us at our third wettest start to february on record. right now, we are going to be adding to some of those totals . north bay communities we are currently tracking some rain. this rain is really not going to be anything too impactful and it is only the, far north bay communities looking at areas in darker and deeper yellow and orange and they will pick up a couple of

hundred to a couple of tenths of an inch. the further south you go the activity is not reaching the ground so keep that in mind and it will be a gloomy start to a day but look at what happens over the next five hours. most of the activity is kind of going to fizzle out before it reaches our south bay communities or even much of the peninsula. i will let you know how long these quiet conditions will stick around because we are tracking another round of rain after this morning and i will let you know the details coming up in my full forecast. back to you. thank you. the bay area's buzzing this weekend. we caught up with big crowds all over san francisco yesterday for the nba all-star weekend festive disease . and of course for the lunar new year parade. and more traffic is expected today to more events are scheduled throughout the city including the all-star game at chase center. going back to the annual lunar new year parade it took over market street to celebrate the year of the snake. sooji nam capture the highlights win

vibrant red and gold shimmering down market street as bay area performers and floats of shiny snakes glide down the parade route. >> we have been here about 15 years and this is the first time we've seen the parade and so excited. >> reporter: jerry and his family were outside hours for the parade to grab a good spot to watch performers like this kung fu academy. >> it is pretty cool. it's not every day you get to have a snake around you. >> reporter: the team say they are excited to take part in this longtime tradition. >> i have been teaching kung fu in the bay area for more than 40 years since 1983. and this has

been in the parade the time. >> reporter: the printed begin on market second streets making its way down kearney and jackson streets. among the notable guests was san francisco mayor daniel lurie, as the honorary marshal of the parade. and in san francisco, the chinese new year parade is a tradition that spans more than 100 years started in the 1860s by chinese immigrants. >> to carry on the tradition and to be the biggest parade in almost the world of the short, we are really proud to be part of that. >> reporter: the parade ran smoothly for the most part except for a delay due to one of the floats running out of gas. but it quickly went back on track. there was also heavy law-enforcement present throughout the perimeters of the parade to ensure the safety of everyone there. >> it was exciting. it is exciting to be on tv. >> reporter: the festivities continue on sunday in chinatown with the community street fair beginning at 9:00 in the morning the . let's take a live look out

at chase center , where the all-star game is happening later today at 5:00. golden state warriors steph curry will be playing in the matchup . but the fund is not stop at chase center. at moscone center the floor is open if you want to try to execute a slamdunk . interactive fan experience is a big hit for those of you looking to show off your basketball skills . also at powell street is a popular spot compo it was renamed all-star alley and we caught up with people waiting in a long line to enter the warriors pop up museum for good reason. >> v nba basketball is so much part of our culture and we love the warriors. and the all-star game, what is it every 20 years , may be. we did not want to lose out on the opportunity to celebrate and it is free. everything else costs more when you want to go to chase center .

>> it will be at least 30 years before the nba all-star game comes back to san francisco. if you have time today, you can still join in on the fun. all the excitement in the city this holiday weekend means a potentially a big boost for local businesses. da lin spent the day crisscrossing the city and this is what he saw. >> reporter: from the bayview to the marina there is optimism, vibrancy and excitement . even happy tears. >> i am very happy. >> reporter: she could not have picked a better weekend to open smoke so kitchen in the bayview. saturday, the grand opening on third street, not far away from thrive city where the nba is hosting all-star festivities to >> i did a collaborative and wanted to make sure there was a time where we could activate people and they could have fun and they could interact up and down with all the businesses . >> reporter: with tens of

thousands of extra visitors this weekend, she is hoping to see some nba fans coming through the door to try her food. >> it is busy and crazy and i am ready and i'm happy about it and it's a good thing. >> reporter: she is not alone, small businesses across the city are capitalizing on the large crowds celebrating the chinese new year parade and the nba all-star events. grant avenue in chinatown was packed with people hanging out at the community street fair before the parade. >> it is a big boost in the arm for us. we have needed this and now we seem to be getting it all at once. it makes me feel so good that chinatown is invigorated. >> reporter: the store owner couldn't agree more. thieves drove a stolen car into his store five months ago , to steal his cameras and the plywood storefront and he said he needs all the help to recover from that big loss. >> foot traffic is doubled . for this time of year. for february, yes. >> reporter: at pier 39 a lot of nba fun and games. a former nba

center demarcus cousins signed autographs and took pictures with fans inside a store. he played his season with the golden state warriors about six years ago. >> the weekend has been great and i am glad to be part of it and see all the festivities going on. and the people from all over the place, it's a beautiful thing. i am glad i can be part of all-star we can. >> reporter: he was a time-lapse of the clouds at the appeal. many business owners brought in food, merchandise and staff to prepare for the busy weekend. they see on top of all the major events, a lot of couples are still celebrating valentine's day. >> today started with a bang and weise had a good lunch rush and i'm gearing up for the afternoon and i think there's a lot of foot traffic around and the parking lot is full. >> reporter: hard to find street parking or an open table on chestnut street in the marina to mayor daniel lurie wants to

bridge. the fire department and sfpd responded to reports of two people in the water near pier 32 around 10:00 p.m. emergency crews quickly rescued one person who was taken to the hospital. crews use boats, thermal imaging cameras, drones and if you would like to search for that second person. as of the latest update, authorities are still searching for that missing person. we reached out to san francisco fire for more information and we are still waiting to hear back. [ crowd chanting ] >> staying in san francisco, protesters gathered on saturday to oppose president trump's proposal for the u.s. to take control of the gaza strip . the plan includes the forced removal of millions of palestinians to countries like jordan and egypt, both of which have rejected that idea. demonstrators condemned the proposal calling it ethnic cleansing. >> we have a right to live a life of dignity not being athletically cleansed. the u.s. government and other countries around the world are funding ethnic cleansing, funding

to southern california, storm cleanup continues in sierra madre after he was hit hard by mudslides near the eaton fire burn scar above altadena. some areas are buried in the deep mud , city workers and cal fire and crews came to the hillside neighborhood to help. the city said his first priority is clearing out main roads. >> we knew what to expect and we put the mud fence up and we tried to be prepared but this was just way, way too much. >> a similar situation near the pacific palisades burn scar . koreans were cleaning up muddy roads in malibu, both areas continue to monitor for more possible mudslides. that is wild

video. at how deep the mud is. we talked about needing the rain after the fires and now we are seeing that . it's like -- >> weather whiplash we like to call it . we need the rain but not other one so we need them to dry out but we don't want them to try out too much and have oil viruses again. it's that fine line, three bears, goldilocks to luckily, they will be drying out over the next several days but we in the bay area are actually looking at a little bit of rain early this morning and the north bay communities at least, it kind of depends on where you're located, as the surge of atmospheric river moisture, it is technically an atmospheric river, it's a very weak one. i would say does not a level one out of five . you can see the moisture stream making its way toward the west coast but again for us it's really not going to be tracy impactful. a little rain this morning and then quickly moving off. but we are tracking another system that could potentially be impacting us on wednesday. bad are things to keep our eyes on it. don't

expect flooding threats and we don't expect strong wind gusts. right now we are looking at the beginning edge of the system making its way over north bay communities and maybe over san francisco right now but it is very, very light and i would consider this a light drizzle . it's not anything crazy heavy and it is the north bay communities that might pick up a couple of tenths of an inch drop this afternoon but again it's really not going to be anything too oppressive early this morning. a lot of cloud coverage is filling in across the area that essentially keeping our temperatures a couple of degrees warmer than what we were feeling yesterday. yesterday we were in the 30s across a lot of the bay area and today we are a couple of degrees to upwards of five to nearly 10 degrees warmer places like santa rosa, sitting in the 40s right now. mid 40s in san francisco, upper 40s , depending

on where you're located but again either way we will continue to see mostly dry conditions across the bay area. this line of rain we see early this morning is not going to last much longer than the next couple of hours . look at it breaking apart as it moves over the land and this is the view at 8:30, not going to last much longer in the early, early morning hours . if you stay in bed for another couple of hours you should be good and avoid most of the rain, not to say a couple of clouds will not stick around this afternoon but overall really not too much worry about when it comes to the weather , this afternoon. early this morning grab that umbrella and quiet and clear conditions to care on monday into tuesday before the next storm system arrives very early wednesday morning. similar to today it's only going to be impacting us early in the morning. by the afternoon hours on wednesday you will be seeing much drier air arriving and did really good news for all of us that want to get outdoors and soak up some sunshine and warmer temperatures, upper 60s to near 70 degrees is going to return by

next weekend. it's going to be lovely and dry by the end half of the week but the beginning have you have to keep your eyes on the radar and definitely grab an umbrella , this morning and wednesday morning. back to you. >> thank you. now to a disease that is killed millions of trees in california and oregon since its discovery in the mid-1990s. researchers at uc berkeley have found a new strain of sudden oak death in the east bay hills . if they cannot be contained it could mean real trouble . brian hackney reports. >> we are in told in part above grizzly peak road in this is in the east bay regional park district. >> reporter: she is the ecological services managers at the park. it's a first place in contra costa county that a new strain of the deadly killing microbe was found. >> this is the tree the tested positive in the fall and this is when we came back and re-resampled in december .

>> reporter: the samples from the tree were brought here where he has been studying the killer microbes. >> it is a disease caused by an exotic pathogen and leak oak trees . >> reporter: it is killed at least 50 million oaks in the coast range of california since the 1980s . the microbe responsible, and a 1, probably hitch a ride on these exotic plants, camellias and rhododendrons . there are three varieties of these killer microbes . >> we believed until this year that only one of these three had escaped into wild. that the sheer the big discovery was that we found another one that is in the wild as well. >> reporter: now the scramble is on to find out how many oaks have been infected with this new variant and during some of the science . >> our intrepid student workers.

>> reporter: this morning they are extracting dna from bay leaves would spread the disease to nearby oaks . the telltale brokerages make indicate infection. >> it may be sudden oak death but we don't know for sure until we test the dna that comes from the samples . >> reporter: using a hole punch, cutouts from the leaves are placed in vials . >> i am getting the extracted dna we collected from the leaves from the hole punches. we do about 1600 tests. >> reporter: and 45 minutes the verdict is in. >> a very specific test that indicates that the sample is positive. >> reporter: there is a possibility the new variant could sweep like wildfire through our remaining oaks. that is why the experts are enlisting community scientists to identify six trees , asap. >> californians in the community is who is testing this. >> reporter: so if you have oak trees that are standing next to

from cbs news bay area, this is the morning edition. welcome back, the time is 6:30 and thank you for joining us i am kelsi thorud and we are joined by meteorologist zoe mintz, zoe, it's been nice. >> yesterday was lovely and perfect timing , mother nature to break but this morning we are looking at some low hanging clouds and rain across the north bay. >> don't tell me that. >> not everyone will see rain. this afternoon will be quiet again . just exactly what you want to hear, quiet conditions this afternoon as this line of rain early this morning is really not anything crazy and tactful . however, i want to take a step back and show you santa rosa. because they have seen 15.66 inches over 15.6 inches of rain above average for the water year and it starts in october and i want to let you know how much rain they have seen since october. october was

below average in november well above average and that was that atmospheric river the choppy for the rain in about a week, december also above average in january below average in february so far, we are already above the monthly rainfall total. this process at our wettest water year on record , even after the driest october on record, that was followed by the wettest november on record. a lot of fun what groups and i will have a fun special coming up on this week. if you want to know the details about what we have seen so far this season. early this morning we are looking at a little bit of rain across the north bay communities but look at how quickly it dissipates. most of us off a communities are going to remain dry and it will be a little bit of low hanging cloud coverage and missed early this morning, by the afternoon you may even see a little bit of sunshine for more inland communities and that sunshine will continue into early monday morning with dry and quiet conditions, at least to check out the early parts of the upcoming week and there is another round of rain that is on the way the week before a

warming trend picks up and i will break down the details that you need to know on this upcoming week of for the coming up in my forecast. back to you. taking a look at this morning's top stories, oakland fire crews responded to a warehouse fire on the 4000 block of san leandro street , citizen out video showed massive plumes of smoke and flames shooting from the roof and the blaze escalated to a two alarm fire at 1000 to a two alarm fire at 1040th avenue. after switching to a defensive operation, crews extinguished the flames and brought the fire under control by 11:00 p.m. thankfully, no one was hurt in the cause is under investigation. not to contra costa county, a major drug bust took place when chp officers seized about 125 pounds of marijuana during a routine traffic stop . the driver and passenger were arrested on possession charges . chp release photos showing several garbage bags filled with drugs found inside the vehicle

and in the trunk. in sonoma county, robbery in rohnert park led to a multi agency chase that ended in a crash in san francisco. surveillance footage shows a suspect snatching it back from a victim outside of a pep boys store on redwood drive saturday afternoon. the victim, an employee returning from the bank -- excuse me. the bank with money. police tracked the suspect's vehicle using license plate readers to daly city before the driver fled and led officers on a high-speed chase through san francisco which ended in a crash on san jose avenue. citizen after video shows traffic backed up after the crash involving the suspect's vehicle. police have taken a man into custody and they believe he robbed an employee along with three accomplices . as part of the all-star weekend, morehouse college and tuskegee university basketball team took to the court at oakland arena for the nba hbcu classic . mary lee was there. ♪

conditions that most of us are dealing with. over the past couple of hours the rain has just begun to move over as far north they communities and this is where accumulating rain is likely. the rest of us to, it's very, light in san francisco. it looks like we might have seen an isolated little bit but if you look at how much rain we have picked up over the past couple of hours, it's zero in san francisco. only the north bay communities that are picked up a couple of hundred seven inch. it's really nothing impressive . the only places that have picked up slightly more is up near mount st. helena where a little bit over a quarter of an inch was picked up and again it is nothing crazy and we are not expecting early morning flooding . most of the activity from this morning as want to dissipate as a pushes south and let's look over the next five hours where really not much activity is going to be moving overhead . not to say some low hanging clouds is not likely further north but it's not going to be anything crazy this afternoon. and most of us not going to have to grab the umbrella. early this morning , we are dealing with more cloud coverage and that low hanging cloud coverage and fog just arrived actually after the sunset and that really cool view

of that incoming low hanging clouds but look, a lot of the cloud coverage is trying to drop rain and you can literally see the rain falling from the cloud and evaporating before it reaches the ground. that is going to be the moral of the story for most of us, evaporating rain. it will not be very impactful this morning . the bigger impact is the fact that the temperatures are nearly as chilly as yesterday , nowhere is in the 30s, we are in the mid-40s and we want to seasonable this afternoon. this line of showers is not going to be doing much as it pushes south and it will be fighting a battle against the dry air and the dry air is going to win throughout this afternoon. high temperatures within a degree or two of average and that line of rain is not going to go much farther than the north bay communities and you may see a few piece of sunshine by the time the sun sets especially farther inland. no weather issues early next week either, a mixture of sun and clouds throughout the day on monday before next storm system officially arrives early wednesday morning. but very similar to this morning it's

time for a look at the headlines of the day. a search and rescue mission was launched along the embarcadero after two people fell into the water near pier 32 by the bay bridge late saturday night . sf fire crews and police responded around 10:00 p.m. rescuing one person who is transported to the hospital. authorities are actively searching for the second missing person. we reached out to the san francisco fire department for more information. we are waiting to hear back . back in san francisco, where chase center is setting the stage for an all-star game later today at 5:00 p.m. golden state warriors steph curry will be taking the court representing his team in the highly anticipated matchup . the chinese new year parade in san francisco took over artistry saturday afternoon ,
