wait... i said son of (bass). son of (bass). son of (bass). look at the words. son of baconator is three dollars. ogh thank you. for bacon that just won't quit, gotta be wendy's. smashed absolutely everything. >> then allegations of abuse and deplorable conditions. what role a defunct east bay prison could play in immigration reform. plus, it is a so-called radical vegan murder cult. its ties to the bay area and -- >> all of a sudden everything kind of went sideways and next thing i know is kind of a blink and i'm upside down. >> an airplane passenger
1:39 am
describes a terrifying crash landing. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hi, i'm sara donchey. i know, shopping in person, wanting to see a product, try it out maybe, ask a human being for advice is becoming harder to do in the digital age. and when you think about camera stores in particular, those are starting to feel like relics of the past. in berkeley, one camera shop has hung on for a half century, but their latest setback is even making that difficult to do, difficult to carry on. the looking glass camera store was targeted in a devastating theft. our kelsi thorud spoke with the store's owner about her initial outrage at that that has since turned to gratitude after the people around her stepped up in a big way. . >> reporter: watching the surveillance video of four suspects ramming a car into her
1:40 am
storefront and then stealing countless cameras and supplies, jen, the president and ceo of look glass photo in berkeley, says at this point she's just exhausted. >> i'm just like i'm so deeply disappointed. like there is so much in the world to be really angry about, to use our capabilities to fight against, and this little camera store is not one of those things. >> reporter: early sunday morning, jen says she woke up to an alert on her phone saying her camera shop's alarm was going off. >> it's that, like, first thing in the morning, not really awake, overwhelmed and feeling furious and scared and worried and -- like i'm at home, i'm not here. >> reporter: she watched live as the suspects went back and forth between their car and her storage room grabs as many
1:41 am
cameras as they could. by the time police arrived, jen says the suspects had already taken off. when she got to the scene, she says the store was almost unrecognizable. >> just imagine the impact of a bomb suddenly sending everything flying, making our conference room door explode. there's still glass, i'm looking at it. >> reporter: the whole store was covered in glass. the suspects destroyed the front entrance to the shop and smashed almost everything in sight. jen says the break-in is extra frustrating because they've done so much to try and keep this from happening. they installed bollards on the sidewalk. they had a roll-down security gate inside. they stored all of their equipment in the back room. but still this. >> like how can we get more creative with our security? like we think we're being creative with our security, right ? it wasn't creative enough. >> reporter: jen says one
1:42 am
glimmer of hope through this difficult time has been all of the support pouring in from the local community and beyond. >> i could not stop crying yesterday with all the messages coming in. the financial support is wonderful, but just people doing whatever they could to come by and let us know that they care, that what we do matters, that they took it personally, that they were as angry as we were. >> reporter: so far more than $50,000 has been donated to help in the recovery effort. jen says the response is overwhelming but so amazing. now as she tries to figure out what's next, she says she's just happy to know that her community is behind her every step of the way. >> just trying to create a stronger bond again with our community that we always do, making them feel safe when they come in here, as well as securing our space. the trump administration is threatening to arrest thousands of undocumented immigrants as part of its proposed crackdown on illegal immigration, but that
1:43 am
plan presents a lot of new challenges. one of them is where to put all of the people being detained. i.c.e. could be looking to turn a notorious federal prison into an immigration detention center. dublin was forced to close last year after more than 100 women sued. they aalleged physical and sexual abuse there. there are no prisoners there now but around 100 employees still working there. one congressman says it would cost tens of millions to repair the facility to house people. >> the building is disgusting. there shouldn't be people in it. should be bulldozed, and i think, changed to a better use. so the fact that the immigration folks think that it's a good idea to put people there i think is just incredibly stupid idea. >> the union representing the employees says i.c.e. officials toured the site as recently as last week. i.c.e. officials tell us they are exploring all options to meet current and future needs but could not confirm individual conversations
1:44 am
with facilities. just a few hours ago, the congressman for east alameda county, eric swalwell, held his first town hall meeting since the inauguration. more than 500 people showed up in union city to voice their concerns. >> you coming here tonight is not useless, you're not helpless. you were just heard. i hear you. >> congressman swalwell spoke before a big crowd. the public's concerns included protecting social security and medicare and immigration policies. swalwell said he's hearing a lot of fear from constituents in his district right now. >> i feel like things have changed significantly in the last four weeks. i'm seeing so much that disturbs me, that reminds me of europe in the 1930s with all that went on in europe. and i just feel like i have to step forward and participate more actively now. >> it was important for me to directly speak to our
1:45 am
representative. you know, it's a democracy that we live in and be able to voice or ask my questions as far as what's getting done, what are we doing. >> coming up tonight night on cbs bay area, our katie nielsen had the chance to sit down exclusively with congressman swalwell to ask him about some of these issue, and importantly, how he plans to respond. she'll have that full interview right here on cbs bay area tomorrow night streaming online as well. former judge ursula jones dickson was sworn in today as the new alameda county district attorney months after former d.a. pamela price was recalled. >> congratulations. >> she was appointed to the job by the county board of supervisors. jones dickson started her career in the almada county d.a.'s office before being appointed to the bench. >> if you have to come to the d.a.'s office, it's never a good time, right? you're not here for fun. but the expectation is that somebody's hearing you, you're listening
1:46 am
to you, and they're making sure that your needs are being met as best that we can. >> dickson will hold the office until at least 2026 when the seat is up for election. she says she plans on running to keep the job in the future. the bay area is in the spotlight for a bizarre reason this week. over ties to an alleged cult. they apparently focus on radical veganism, gender identity, and artificial intelligence. they're also tied to six murders, including one in vallejo. the cult's founder jack goes by ziz and lives in berkeley. this is the mug shot from when she and two others were arrested yesterday in maryland. they were charged with trespassing and hiding a gun in their car. michelle was one of the people arrested with ziz. police are investigating the zizians for a number of crimes, including the 2022 murder of michelle's parents, richard and rita, in pennsylvania. ziz was
1:47 am
charged with obstructing a homicide investigation in that case. a month before those murders, ziz was living in vallejo with other group members. their landlord, curtis lynn, tried to evict them for not paying rent. that is when police say there was a fight. lind was stabbed in the eye with a sword and shoots and kills one of the zizians. police ruled that self-defense. now, that was in 2022. but this january lind was stabbed and killed in vallejo. a man named maximillian snyder was charged with murder in that case. prosecutors think he was trying to stop lind from testifying against the zizians. three days later a border patrol agent died in a shootout near the canadian border. a member of the ziziana also died there. another member is facing gun charges. most recently the fbi has searched the home where zid was living in north carolina with the two people involved in the border patrol shootout. one of the members arrested sunday
1:48 am
is 26-year-old daniel blank from sacramento. >> reporter: three people behind bars tonight held on weapons and trespassing charges, but investigators say they're linked to something much darker. the trio tied to murders from coast to coast. in 2022 other members of the so-called zizian cult are accused of killing a vallejo land lord, curtis lind, killed before testifying against them in trial. the last known address for one of the members behind bars, 26-year-old daniel blank, was listed as a po box in the city of sacramento. no word on when he lived here. two others arrested alongside him this week include on the left the suspected ringleader, jack ziz lasota. on the right, michelle. the cult is said to have a highly intelligent set of member who is all met online. michelle was questioned back in 2022 after the murder of her parents in pennsylvania. she was
1:49 am
never charged. lacosta was taken into cust for refusing to cooperate in that murder investigation. >> it's shocking. you know, it's something that you wouldn't imagine even happening here. >> reporter: neighbors react to the shocking double murder. >> you know, just passing, going for walk as a family, he was always outside cutting his grass or cleaning the leaves. they always had impeccable christmas lights every single year. >> reporter: most recently the accused cult members were linked to the death of a border patrol agent killed during a shootout in vermont along with another zizian member. the trio was in court in maryland. he spoke to a judge maintaining his innocence. people on board a delta flight that skidded on the runway before flipping over are sharing their stories and the moments they tried to escape. you've got a cut here. >> yeah, yeah, a little balder than i was this morning. >> the latest into what
1:50 am
apparently went wrong there. and more affordable housing could be coming to san francisco, but the people living in that neighborhood already are not happy about the proposal. pretty nice weather across the bay area today despite the passing clouds. temperatures manage to climb up into the low to mid-60s. clouds yield a slight chance of showers tomorrow morning. we'll track that and a big warm-up for the last weekend in february coming up in the first alert forecast. and rihanna was in court today to support her boyfriend asap rocky. why his reaction to the verdict for him surprised everyone, especially her.
1:53 am
investigators have found those black boxes on board the delta flight that crashed after skidding down a toronto tarmac before it flipped on to its roof. more than two dozen people were hurt, thankfully and miraculously, nobody died. this is what it looked like inside the plane after it came to a stop. you see people hanging from their seats upside down. terrifying to imagine being in that position. the plane was
1:54 am
heading to toronto from minneapolis, striking the landing strip before catching fire and then turning sideways. investigator es are still looking into what caused the plane to actually flip. one man who was on the flight was on his way to a paramedics conference in toronto. he called the landing forceful and said human instinct kicked in as everybody tried to help each other off of the plane. >> as we made our decent and made touchdown, it was just a very forceful event where all of a sudden everything just kind of went sideways and then next thing i know is kind of a blink and i'm upside down still strapped in. the one minute you're landing, kind of waiting to see your friends and your people and the next minute you're physically upside down and just really turned around. but it sounded, i mean, it was just cement and metal, you know? >> no time to be scared? >> oh yeah, plenty of time, yeah. i think the absolute initial feeling is just need to
1:55 am
get out of this. took my seat belt off, which i had obviously left fastened for the landing. and as i took it off crashed down on to the ceiling which had become the floor since we were upside down. >> i mean, i see you've got a cut here. you also have one -- >> yeah, a little balder than it was this morning. i'm okay. not really sure when this happened, whether it was during landing. i believe it was. but yes, everyone seemed kind of physically -- and that's what we did. you could see kind of row by row or area by area people were checking one another out, making decisions about whether we would help one another with our straps or if by doing that would they be landing on somebody else. but everyone seemed like they were there to make sure we helped each other and, you know, moved out of harm's way. >> here's something you don't want to see on your morning commute a car flying off an overpass. oh my gosh. this happened near sacramento on i-5.
1:56 am
the car crashed on to freeway, as you saw, it barely, barely missed other cars. one of those drivers caught this whole thing on dashcam. >> that car really could have landed on any of us that were passing at the time. the two drivers that were on my left were so much closer i feel like those are the two lottery winners. >> well, the driver said he just had a couple of seconds to react to the crash. he was able to navigate between those tree branches that landed right there you saw on the freeway. the driver that did crash is in critical condition but amazingly no one else was hurt. first alert weather powered by kia. learn more at kia.com. kia, movement that inspires. >> those stories make me paranoid about driving to and from work. the last storm made it difficult, scary to drive in,
1:57 am
but we're kind of dry, right? >> a chance of showers for the morning commute tomorrow. it's going to be more annoying trying to find the right intermittent setting. >> auto never really does it. >> i had a car that had auto. it worked great. ever since then it's been like i wish i had that back. >> i'll write a letter to the company. >> let's make sure we have our priorities in order. let's take a look at what's happening on first alert doppler right now, which is very, very little. a sprinkle over in the pacific. this is the first wave of moisture largely falling apart as it's moving in. this is going to evaporate on the way down. paves the way for actual showers hitting the coast later on tonight. let's take a look at futurecast from now through 6:00 a.m. and again, this is the stuff that's not reaching ground level. it's all going to evaporate into the atmosphere, but these are the actual showers hitting the coast of the north bay by about 6:00 in the morning. the thing is, while the north bay has a decent chance of adding up a few hundredths of an
1:58 am
inch of rain, this is pretty much going to just dissolve as it tries to make its way farther across the bay area. 6:00 a.m. through noon, and you can see the showers holding together and then just falling apart. just gone by the time noon rolls around. what sprinkles leftover will be moving out. a break in cloud cover and sunshine peeking through with temperatures trying to warm up a little bit. but we'll climb up to basically what's normal for this time of year with those few cracks in the cloud cover tomorrow afternoon. into the low 60 s in in the santa clara valley, 63 in san jose is tomorrow's average high. 63 degrees in concord, exactly the average high temperature. 61 in oakland, guess what, tomorrow's average high. basically a mix of upper 50s and low 60s across the entire bay area. these are the coolest temperatures that we are going to experience for a while, because as the dry forecast settles in, temperatures are going to warm up to a greater extent. take a look at the rain chances as we head through the
1:59 am
next seven days. and other than that bump in the rain chances tomorrow, basically just for the north bay, there are no rain chances. if we had a ten-day outlook, it would be largely rain free. some of the forecast data is trying to bring a chance of a shower into the forecast by the time next thursday and friday roll around. the last two days of february. we're talking about something that's that far down the line. while we're in this dry pattern, temperatures are going to warm up a lot. the ten-day temperature outlook for san jose. a few degrees above normal, four, five degrees above average by thursday and friday, but then into the low to mid-70s, close to ten degrees above normal through most of next week. a little bit of a cooldown as that hint of a shower chance enters the really long-range forecast. that's well beyond the scope of the seven-day outlook. a long way to be between now and then. enjoy a taste of spring forecast for the last weekend in february. the inland temperature outlook, san jose one of the warmer spots. on average looking at low 70s for inland temperatures over the weekend into early next week
2:00 am
with a mix of clouds and sunshine. there'll be a little fog here and there. not a major factor. temperatures around the bay are also going to warm up, just not quite as much. but still, when you're flirting with 70 degrees bayside in the month of february, that tells you how unusual this temperature pattern is going to be. i don't think records are in jeopardy at this point. that's something we continue to evaluate as we get closer to this warm spell. for the coast, one more day in the upper 50s. then into the low 60s and mid-60s for high temperatures saturday and sunday and staying well above normal through most of next week. sara? >> all right, paul, thank you. mayor daniel lurie wants to invite more people to party in downtown san francisco. lurie sponsored a new state bill. it would put 20 more liquor licenses up for grabs for businesses near union square, the moscone center, and yuba buena gardens.

one beachside neighborhood could become like downtown if plans for a 22-story high-rise are approved. developers say it will bring more affordable housing to the outer sunset. people living there are not excited about the possibility. >> it's why people moved out here in the first place, they love the neighborhood. changing it with a super high sky rise is not going to make what people love and adore about our neighborhood. >> the second pitch for this particular high-rise. this one would have 24 floors and stand around 250 feet tall. the building would have 446 units with more than 200 allotted for affordable senior housing. people in oakland are choosing a different way to live, opting in for co-housing communities. they say this cuts down on costs and helps people avoid loneliness. there are around 200 co-housing neighborhoods around the nation right now and more are being added every year after the success of swan market in oakland. one group is trying to break ground on another
2:02 am
community in fremont. >> we've got the land. we've got all the approvals. and we hope to break ground pretty soon. humans need each other. we're social animals. and we forget that because we build the garages in front of our houses and separate our homes by fences and co-housing the opposite. >> mission peak would operate lake swan's market with everyone acting as part of an hoa and consensus decision making. js up next, we head down to scottsdale to check in with matt lively and the giants and how some of their young pitchers are getting to learn from one of the most decorated players in the game.

going to sell lots of ticket whence they give the ball to justin verlander. the three-time cy young winner has dominated the league for decades. >> one of those moments you pinch yourself. 20 years in the league, that's impressive. >> reporter: verlander might be new to the clubhouse, but he's hardly the new guy. >> does being a mentor suit you, have you found? >> yeah, i think it does now. >> reporter: the two-time world series champ knows part of his role will be mentoring the giants' younger pitchers. >> i need to have a balancing act. >> reporter: bob melvin is happy to see him take on that role, knowing not every veteran player would do the same. >> he threw a bullpen the other day. usually you do arm care after thafrment he stayed out for two sides. i know these guys were excited about the potential of being able to pick his brain. >> reporter: hayden birdsong is
2:07 am
eager to learn from the former mvp pitcher. >> it's crazy. hall of famer, obviously. going to be a hall of famer. and i grew up watching him. he's 20 years older than i am, and it's cool to hear some, just stuff from him while i'm throwing. >> not quite that far. you're like a ball off. >> reporter: karsten feels like he's going back to school to get a verlander education. >> that's a really cool thing to have. guy's been playing 20 years in the big leagues. you get to see what he does and what works for him. obviously, not everything is going to click with you, but kind of watch him go about his day. it's pretty surreal. >> reporter: verlander might be the old man in the clubhouse, but he knows a thing or two about winning and feels good about his chances in san francisco. >> so far, man, you know, i've got a really good feeling about this team, these guys, just this
2:08 am
situation. i'm pretty excited about it. >> reporter: getting justin verlander to the bay makes losing blake snell just a little bit less painful. essentially, they replaced a two-time cy young winner with a three-time cy young winner. not too bad. rapper asap rocky was not hiding his emotions after being found not guilty in his trial today. his unexpected reaction in the courtroom.
2:10 am
after a three-week trial, rapper asap rocky was found not guilty in court today. he was accused of firing a gun at a former friend on a hollywood street in 2021. the jury took around three hours to deliberate while asap rocky only needed seconds to start celebrating the verdict. >> not guilty. >> yeah, he dove into the arms

of his longtime partner, rihanna. she's been in and out of the courtroom with him, bringing their two young children with her last week. asap rocky's lawyer talked with reporters after court ended today, praising his client's athleticism. >> i didn't realize how athletic he was. he, in a single leap, went over the jury box. look, that was raw emotion. that was happiness. >> asap was facing more than 20 years in prison if he were found guilty. he thanked the jurors as they left, telling them thank y'all for saving my life. but again, the moment that is going viral is him diving over to hug rihanna. >> that's, i mean, i would imagine that's really emotional moment. >> yeah. >> two decades in prison or, hey, you walk out the door. >> or i get to hug rihanna, which can we blame him for that? >> pretty easy choice there. >> yeah. thank you for watching. the late show with stephen colbert is next. the news
