how it could help investigators zero in on a cause. who's in charge? donald trump and elon musk sit for their first joint interview defending their swift and steep cuts to the federal government. even after the white house claims musk does not run the so-called department of government efficiency. and not guilty. cheers erupt in a los angeles courtroom after rapper a$ap rocky is acquitted of felony gun assault charges. his message to the jury. good morning. i'm michael george. we start with the investigation into that scary delta plane crash. crews have recovered the plane's black boxes, two key pieces of evidence. other evidence investigators will be looking at -- new video like this showing the delta jet hitting the runway hard. the question now -- was there a problem with the landing gear? the right wing sheared off before the plane burst into flames and flipped over.

of the 21 people injured, all but two have been released from the hospital. cbs' nikki battiste has the latest from toronto. >> reporter: airport officials in toronto say u.s. investigators have joined the canadian team at the scene of monday's delta airlines crash at pearson international airport. >> we expect that the investigators will be reviewing the aircraft on its current configuration on the runway for the next 48 hours. >> reporter: video obtained by tmz shows the moment the jet caught fire and flipped over leaving a trail of black smoke behind it. >> drop everything. drop it. come on. >> reporter: flight crew members rushed to help passengers who were strapped in upside down, unbuckle, and escape the wreckage. >> what i saw was everyone on that plane suddenly became very close in terms of how to help one another, how to console one another. >> reporter: despite the terrifying scene, officials say everyone on board survived, well

-- although there were some injuries. >> mainly stemming from back sprains, head injuries, anxiety, some headaches, nausea and vomiting due to the fuel exposure. >> reporter: officials say they will not speculate on what may have caused the crash, but aviation experts say investigators will take a close look at weather conditions. >> they're going to be looking at things like wind gusts, wind - wind shears, things like that. icing on the runways. >> reporter: airport officials say two storms dumped more than 20 inches of snow at the airport in the days prior to the crash. but monday itself was a clear day. nikki battiste, cbs news, toronto, canada. and coming up on "cbs mornings," delta ceo ed bastian joins us exclusively from atlanta. much of the nation is again facing dangerous winter weather with bitterly cold temperatures, snow and ice making for potentially treacherous travel.

more than 82 million people are in a deep freeze with extreme cold warnings stretching from montana and the dakotas all the way down to texas. cold weather records were set throughout the plains with temperatures in bismarck, north dakota, dropping to minus 39 degrees yesterday. snow, sleet, and rain is pummelling the central u.s. there were numerous accidents in oklahoma where roads had to be shut down. winter storm warnings in effect from kansas to the east coast including virginia and north carolina which could see several inches of snow and icy conditions. now to politics. in their first joint interview, president trump and billionaire elon musk discussed their sweeping efforts to slash spending and shrink the federal work force. there are questions as to who's actually running the department of government efficiency known as doge after the white house claimed musk is not in charge of that team. cbs news' jarred hill has details. we have seen musk in the oval

office talking about the cuts that he's making, bragging about them really. now they say he's not in charge. is this an effort to duck accountability? >> so here's the thing, the white house defining musk as an adviser to president trump and not an official member of the doge team as well as saying doge is a rebrand of a pre-existing entity could help in a lawsuit arguing that musk has too much power for someone not confirmed by the senate. this as cuts continue with some new major hiccups. >> i wanted great people, and he's a great person. >> reporter: on fox news, president donald trump and his senior adviser, elon musk, defended their aggressive efforts to slash through the federal government. >> all we're trying to do here is restore the will of the people through the president. >> he's a leader. >> reporter: the interview aired hours after a federal judge in d.c. denied a request from 14 democrat-evidence states to black musk's department of government efficiency in accessing data systems and

firing workers at seven government agencies. the judge called doge's actions unpredictable but added she couldn't restrain the work without clear evidence of imminent, irreparable harm. >> what do we want? >> reporter: public criticism continues to grow. tuesday crowds protested outside the centers for disease control and prevention, one of multiple agencies hits by thousands of job cuts. folks newly hired or promoted hit the hardest. but along the way, doge has made errors. just last night the department of agriculture admitted it's trying to get back workers who were accidentally fired. veterinarians and animal health technicians working to prevents the spread of bird flu. >> one of the biggest functions of the doge team is just making sure that the presidential executive orders are actually carried out. >> reporter: tuesday president trump signed executive orders directing his administration to find ways to reduce the cost of in vitro fertilization, and another to rein in independent government agencies like the federal trade commission. further extending the power of

the white house. another major priority for the white house is immigration. overnight two u.s. officials told cbs news the trump administration has put a hold on immigration applications under biden-era programs for migrants in latin america as well as ukraine. the white house is blaming fraud and security concerns on this issue. >> all right, jarred hill. thanks for joining us. a new twist in the criminal case against new york city mayor eric adams. a federal judge is scheduled to meet with the mayor and lawyers from both sides today after the justice department called for corruption charges against adams to be dropped. u.s. district judge dale ho saying he wants everyone to be ready to explain the rationale for dismissing the case. critics say it was done to pressure adams to cooperate with the trump administration's immigration crackdown. this comes after new york governor kathy hochul met with key political leaders yesterday to discuss possibly removing adams from office. now to the talks over the war in ukraine taking place in

saudi arabia. top diplomats from the u.s. and russia met without ukraine for the first time since russia launched its invasion three years ago. the talks lasted about four hours. ukraine's president, volodymyr zelenskyy, was angry about being excluded. in response president trump showed little patience and falsely claimed ukraine started the war. >> today i heard we weren't invited. you've been there for three years. you should have ended it -- you should have never started it. you could have made a deal. >> reporter: secretary of state marco rubio claims ukrainian and european leaders will be involved in the talks. the trump administration's russia-friendly approach is a major aboutface for the u.s. new developments in the israel-hamas cease-fire. in a surprise move, hamas is speeding up the release of hostages in an apparent trade for israel allowing mobile homes and construction equipment into the gaza strip. ten hostages are set to be freed this week.

what was believed to be a deadly daytime robbery caught on video was really a murder-for-hire scheme according to san bernardino's police department. security video shows an armed man chasing a woman around her car outside a restaurant last month. after a struggle she was shot and killed. investigators say her estranged husband paid a group of men to stalk and kill her due to a contentious divorce. the husband and four others have been charged with murder. npr says native american activist leonard peltier was released from prison after the president commuted his sentence before leaving office. he was convicted of murdering the agents who were serving arrest warrants during a 1975 standoff at an indian reservation in south dakota felt during his nearly half century in prison he's maintained his innocence. biden confirmed him to home confinement which he'll serve in -- commuted him to home
