in our money watch this morning, if you have ever borrowed money, you know that lenders focus on your credit score, and if you are looking to clean up your credit, jill schlesinger has some so specific steps to take, thank you for being here, this is very important. this is something i'm trying to teach my kids a lot about these days. >> just remember, a score is derived from a credit report, that will detail your payment history and the reason we look at that or anybody cares about
6:41 am
this is that a lender wants to measure your ability to repay a loan and basically to honor your financial commitments. the higher the score, the lower the interest rate charge on everything from a home mortgage or home loan, car loan, credit card, and in some places, you can see people pull credit reports if you have a job that involves security, so it is wide-ranging in its application, so we should care that everything on that report is correct and we look at the score in order to understand whether we can save ourselves a little bit more money by concentrating on driving up the score. >> so let's talk about the range of numbers when it comes to a credit score, what is considered a good number? >> there are a lot of different scores, the dominant one is called the psycho score -- fico score, the national average is

6:43 am
installment or is it variable like a credit card? i would say the best way to improve your score is to pay your bills on time, that is why it is important to enroll in an automatic payment through your credit card or loan provider, make sure that anything you owe is automatically debited from your bank account, that is how you can avoid being late and piling up those charges or add to your interest cost, also consider the fact that you will want to reduce the total amount of debt you owe, keep the balances low on credit cards and other revolving credit and although we are always confronted with this moment where you are checking out of a department store and they say if you apply for a new credit card you will save 10% on your purchase today, please don't do this, this will drive down your credit score. it is not worth the 10% savings, also try not to close accounts, just don't use the cards that you're not using, throw them in the back of
