north bay families are living a nightmare tonight after two students and two student santa rosa high schools died from what could have been fentanyl overdoses. two other teens are also in the hospital after a separate pair of overdoses. now police are trying to figure out if these cases have been connected. people are now asking how any of this could have happened. >> reporter: a makeshift memorial is growing in front of santa rosa high school. a 16-year-old student named gia died from a drug overdose on saturday. her friends, sydney, say it has been heartbreaking. >> i really read into it and then i had to go home. i crashed out honestly at work, i was crying. like i just don't understand why people who are one of the brightest bubbly people have it taken away, that she did not deserve this at all. >> reporter: the same thing is happening at montgomery high, where 18-year-old logan also

passed away. both students were found saturday night at a residence on brookwood drive. although they may have thought they were ingesting cocaine. earlier in the day, two other teenagers were also hospitalized. >> and it is in weed, it's like anything honestly. it's just so scary. >> reporter: a 21-year-old man named ramon nunez was arrested on sunday on charges of second-degree homicide and furnishing narcotics to a minor. they found distinctive packaging on him linking him to the two overdose deaths. april santos says logan was a great student with a great core group of friends. >> it's devastating. there are no words to describe a loss like this, let alone for the family. my heart goes out to them because i cannot imagine this loss. the students on campus, that's a lifelong friend, their

peer they had planned to walk across the stage with. it's really hard. >> reporter: the district is offering extra grief counseling at both schools and a therapy dog named gemma was on hand. gemma can sense when students are suffering in silence. >> she will go to the person that doesn't want to talk, that is having a really hard time. and i'm going to sit with you. >> reporter: back at santa rosa high, she hopes it is a wake up call that her fellow students will take seriously. >> and even smoking weed, you need to be cautious. the you can't trust any of these people that are selling to keep them locked up. he's a murderer. >> police have not officially released the names of those that suffered overdoses. encouraging

parents to have open conversations with your children about the extreme risk of fentanyl contaminated drugs. >> and according to the cdc, overdose deaths have been trending down across the u.s. they fell 17% between july of 2023 and july of 2024. before that, they decreased 4% nationally between 2022 and 2023. but in that same time period, some states reported an increase in overdose deaths including our state, california. but you can see in yellow there. that's where the overdose deaths fell. experts say awareness and overdose reversal drugs have helped. they credit medicines that treat abuse disorder. in san francisco, mayor daniel lurie has made tackling fentanyl a priority. earlier this month, he declared a fentanyl state of emergency and fast tracking a facility to help people with addiction and mental health issues. >> to those who are struggling,

help is on the way. we are plugging in place solutions that will reach you and give you the second chance you deserve. >> well, the city is aiming to open that facility in the tenderloin come april. the deadline has passed for federal workers to tell elon musk what they did last week or lose their jobs allegedly. office of personal management sent an e-mail over the weekend, demanding employees respond with the list of five things they did over the past week. if they didn't, elon musk said non-response would be taken as a resignation. they cannot address this outside their agency. telling their workers not to respond. >> and what is really interesting is this e-mail has created some decent from within, where you have different agencies and departments,

replying in different ways. of course, if something comes down, they want it to be that all departments will follow that. >> and in a post on x today after they were optional. and they will be given another chance and failure to respond will result in termination. to federal cuts over the weekend where someone hung an upside down flag at yosemite. they're among those out of a job. >> and that is what's going to happen and that no one will be there to pick up the trash and toilet paper, all the stuff, so you don't have to see. >> and there may be some changes now, where they plan to restore at least 50 jobs to help

maintain parks. they will also be hired. here in the bay area, another view that's causing some concern for people in san jose. the city is planning to put up digital billboards where they could generate an estimated $10 million in revenue. some say the city is making a big mistake. >> and so they like to call it large format digital science. we call them billboards, advertising national brands. >> reporter: renderings give a depiction of what billboards could look like. >> and it is the idea of economic development. we're in

a sad state. >> reporter: tuesday, the city council will vote on whether to allow large format at four downtown city owned sites. the centers for performing arts, the convention center, and two garages. they're a part of the coalition of residents that are called no digital billboard san jose. they have a list of why the billboards are a bad idea including no benefit to local businesses, disruptions to wildlife, and energy and climate issues. another big concern for opponents, public safety behind the wheel. they're worried these ads will distract people's eyes from the road. >> the billboards are designed to distract drivers without doing that. they serve no purpose and they generate no revenue. >> reporter: the mayor is in support of the new billboards despite voting against them as recently as 2022. he believes it will contribute to safety and revenue. we are not just installing screens. we are creating a more connected

vibrant downtown. these digital displays will provide direct economic benefits to the tune of tens of millions of dollars, and they will make us safer. research shows these well lit spaces can significantly reduce crime rates. city staff estimates a guaranteed minimum of $20 million from the proposal. it would be a ten year commitment with the orange barrel media and two five-year extension options. district three city council candidate and current matt mahan staffer is imploring the city council to do it the majority of what they want. >> and we need to get deeply connected with the neighbors who have been expressing their disapproval at some time. >> reporter: the city would receive 15% for free. the rest sold to advertisers. he hopes he won't see it happen. >> and i'm concerned this will be one of the aggressive policy

someone from the bay area just won a whopping $10 million and no, it wasn't the lottery, but he won it in a reality tv show hosted by youtuber, mr. beast, if you don't recognize the name, your kids might. jeffrey allen tells kelsi thorud how he went on the show goes beyond winning money. >> reporter: this was the moment bay area native, jeffrey allen won $10 million as a contestant on the prime video origin fall series, beast games. >> i mean, i'm getting goose bumps talking about it. it's a special moment. >> reporter: he got the idea to go on the series from his

9-year-old son, jack. >> he introduced me to mr. beast early last year. i saw the application pop up and i thought wow, it's cool to be the cool dad for my 9-year-old and talk about his disease. >> reporter: jeffrey's son, lucas, has a condition, ctd. >> his activity is something he will need help with. delayed, kids with his condition are prone to seizure, low muscle tone, and currently there is no therapy or cure or treatment. >> reporter: and since his diagnosis, his family has worked tirelessly to bring awareness to ctd and push for more research. >> with a rare disease, it is tough to get them interested in it. >> and this is where it gets fun. >> reporter: that's where they became the perfect platform. his goal is to always share his

ocean. >> reporter: and he begins that journey bright and early tuesday, carrying the exact weight of his son, all in the hopes of one day, finding a treatment or even a cure for his youngest son. all right, paul is here to talk about weather and a very, very little bit of rain. >> we had some rain around rush hour. it doesn't make much of a difference. it is just enough to kind of mess up traffic, but we will get back into more rainy weather pattern down the line. and the storm track has been pushed up to the north with a powerful storm system moving into the pacific northwest and leading to the severe thunderstorm threat for parts of

british columbia, washington, oregon. it's why we have a brief passing shower this evening with more storms lining up. eventually some of those will be heading our way as we see february into march. in the short term, we will be in a warm and dry pattern for the rest of the week. let's take a look at where things stand right now as you look outside and seeing a little fog in the distance. temperatures have retreated into the 50s kind of mild out there for a february evening. these temperatures are just a few below our normal high, and done for five hours at those points. it's not all that far. the fog is going to be a factor throughout much of the night. kind of consolidating themselves and spreading out to a greater expense. but what what happens as that fog begins too dissipate

as they shift. it will stir them around just a little bit. not a breezy day, but just enough to help disperse that fog or the at least start the process, so it will not take long for them to dissipate entirely and where the temperatures will warm up from a cool, but not cold start. we will begin in the 40s, 48 degrees. some of the warm spots in san jose and san francisco. and some of the coolest temperatures will be on the north bay valleys. we will dip down to the upper 30s tomorrow morning. highs will warm up, 2, 3 degrees above average. you will be about 4, 5 degrees above normal. some of the warm spots, healdsburg, santa rosa, and san jose getting up close to 70 degrees just falling barely short. in general, mid to upper 60s inland with the low 60s along the coast. even warmer weather on the forecast later

this week. and wednesday, thursday, friday, that's close to 10 degrees above normal. we begin the month of march with a drop in temperatures. then we settle into the below average trend next week. that will coincide with the return of the rain chances, which are not that high on our rain chart just yet. that's because some of the models are having disagreements. and my money is on saturday night into sunday. we will keep you updated on that, so you can adjust outdoor plans. the pollen count is going to be sky high. one more day in the medium high category, and three straight days. the warmest days in the highest category, ash, alder, juniper, making folks sniffle and sneeze. let's take a look at your seven-day forecast, pushing temperatures up along thursday and. scattered showers
