streets to say goodbye to a mother and her young boys who have become a symbol of the october 7th horror. first, doubling down. president trump threatening the jobs of federal workers who don't comply with elon musk's ultimatum as the house passes a budget plan to pay for his agenda. good morning. i'm michael george. president donald trump is holding his first cabinet meeting this morning, and elon musk will have a seat at the table. this as his department of government efficiency comes under new scrutiny about whether it has the power to enforce the widespread firings of thousands of federal workers. cbs' jarred hill joins us with more. so elon musk says that there's a monday deadline for federal workers to send an email justifying their jobs or they'll be fired. that deadline has come and gone. now musk says they have another chance? >> they do, but the timeline for the new deadline is not really clear right now. elon musk, though, is lashing out at both workers who haven't

bent to his demand and managers who told them not to. musk will come face to face with some of those when trump has his first cabinet meeting today. ahead of the first cabinet meeting of his second term, today president trump is backing senior adviser elon musk's demand requiring federal workers send a list of what they accomplished on the job last week. >> well, it's somewhat voluntary, but if you don't answer i guess you get fired. >> reporter: the deadline extended more than a million responses have come in. the administration is preparing to direct federal agencies to submit reorganization plans by march 13th and to prepare for sweeping reductions in force. tuesday 21 career government staffers resigned from doge writing they refused to compromise core government systems, jeopardize american sensitive data, or dismantle critical services. >> they've created a toxic work environment, and nobody wants to work under those conditions.

>> reporter: though elon musk has been the face, the white house says amy gleason, a staffer from the first trump term, is the acting administrator of doge. president trump stressed he's in charge as congressional republicans push for stop in tone. he announced a gold car visa is in the works for wealthy immigrants. the price tag, $5 million. >> it's going to be a route to citizenship. the people will be vetted. >> reporter: the money collected he says will help pay down the federal deficit. >> we're also learning that ukraine and the u.s. have reached a deal about ukraine's resources. what can you tell us? >> reporter: that's right. this will give the u.s. access to ukrainian mineral reserves, also oil and gas. all of this part of an effort by the trump white house to recoup the cost of the war. now the idea was actually initially floated in some ways by zelenskyy. ukrainian leaders have hoped that this would serve as a foundation for long-term security guarantees against any future russian aggression. it's not officially in this deal, though an officials that

knows trump and zelenskyy would talk about that when they meet likely on friday when this gets signed. >> we will be watched. thanks. and house republicans passed a budget proposal backed by president trump. the budget blueprint come trump calls a big, beautiful bill, passed 217-215 last night with all democrats and one republican opposing. thomas massie of kentucky. it calls for a $4.5 trillion tax cut and $2 trillion in spending cuts which likely means big cuts to medicaid and increasing the federal deficit. it starts a process to pass a budget and reconcile it with the senate's version. the white house won't say how many federal workers have already or will be fired, but ian lee spoke with three in wyoming and what their firing could mean for rest of us. >> reporter: even in the winter the snoshone national forest buzzes with activity with so many people snowmobiling, riding bikes, hiking, and rock climbing.

maintains the country's forest takes an army of service workers including daylyn grindell. what did you although of most about your job? >> i loved going into work every day and being able to work with my colleagues. >> reporter: grindell along with jack corney and tim leady recently received a letter that said they were being fired for poor job performance. what was your reaction when you saw that the reason you were being fired was because of poor performance? >> you know, i put my heart and soul into that job. and that's just not true. >> reporter: every summer tens of millions of americans visit the national forests. but this summer, they might look a little different. >> there's a lot of unforeseen consequences that the general public aren't always aware of. >> reporter: what too you fear, what would happen? >> we're clearing the trails for people to access the wilderness. and that's just -- that's not going to happen this year. >> reporter: let's say you just arrived in town and want information about the forest. maybe a good place to camp or trail to hike on, or maybe you're scared about bears.

you come to your local ranger station. but because of the recent firings, this one won't be open any time soon. terminations at the forest service also come as wildfires nationwide grow fiercer and more frequent. show of hands, how many of you were qualified to fight fires? so you guys could all have been on the front lines this summer fighting fires if needed. >> yes. >> yep. >> reporter: i spoke with several senior forest service officials across the country, and they told me the future leadership of the agency has been wiped out, and it could take decades to recover. another warned that some of these workers monitored bear populations, and without them there could be more encounters. >> that was ian lee reporting. there was a close call at chicago's midway airport. video shows a southwest airlines plane trying to land, then abruptly pulling back up to avoid a collision with a private business jet taxiing across the

runway. the southwest flight from omaha, nebraska, was just inches from the ground when it happened. the faa says the flex jet business plane entered the runway without authorization. >> hold right there, sir. don't move. hold -- 560. >> 2504, how did that happen? >> audio for the air traffic control tower shows the business jet had been cleared to cross one runway but hold at another. the southwest airlines plane landed safely a short while later. flex jet is conducting its own investigation and will take action to rectify and ensure the highest safety standards. well, the largest measles outbreak to hit texas in nearly 30 years is growing. state health officials say 124 cases in nine counties in rural west texas have been reported. 18 people are hospitalized. authorities say the outbreak is concentrated in a close-knit, undervaccinated mennonite community. the majority of the cases are

among people younger than 18. there have een nine cases in neighboring new mexico. and overseas, a mysterious illness has killed more than 50 people in the northwest part of the democratic republic of congo over the past five weeks. it was first discovered in three children who reportedly ate a bat. 419 cases and 53 deaths have been recorded since the outbreak started last month. doctors say most people died within 48 hours after the onset of initial symptoms, including fever, vomiting, and internal bleeding. deadly viruses like ebola and yellow fever have been ruled out. >> a heart-wrenching day in israel as the nation says goodbye to a mother and her two red headed boys. they've become a symbol of the october 7th atrocities. funeral services for shiri bibas and her sons, 4-year-old ariel and 10-month-old kafir, are taking place today. the service is private, but

bulldog puppies from a pen in the back of the store. authorities say the puppies are valued at more than $8,000. a woman when later bought one of the dogs from a street vendor returned it after it matched the description of one of the stolen pups. the man who faked the seizure has been arrested. police are still looking for at least three other suspects. three americans were found dead at a beach resort in belize, and a convicted murderer gets a second chance. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the oklahoman" says the u.s. supreme court granted an oklahoma death row inmate a new trial. the court threw out the murder conviction and death penalty sentence for richard glossip, convicted of paying another man to kill his boss, hotel owner barry van treese, in 1997. he has always maintained his innocence. the court ruled prosecutors knowingly allowed false testimony to be given. glossip has been scheduled for execution nine times in the past and fed last meals on three occasions.

the "chicago tribune" reports the mother of a palestinian american boy who was stabbed to death testified at the hate crime trial of his accused murderer. prosecutors say landlord joseph czuba stabbed 6-year-old wadee alfayoumi 26 times in october of 2023 in the suburb of plainfield. he's also accused of stabbing and wounding the boy's mother. czuba targeted tenants because of his prejudice over palestinians and the attack on israel a week earlier. he's pleaded not guilty. and "the boston globe" says three women from massachusetts died while on vacation in belize. local police say the bodies of the women were found saturday in their hotel room after they failed to respond to housekeepers knocking on their door. they were last seen returning to their room thursday night. officials say there was no sign of violence, and the deaths are being investigated as possible drug overdoses. but tests are also being done to determine if they died from
