1:37 am
i'm taylor tomlinson, and this has been "after midnight"! good night! oh, my god,
1:38 am
successful era in the history of our country. >> -- placing blame -- >> joe biden especially let the price of eggs get out of control. >> -- and raising eyebrows. >> $8 for making mice transgender. >> president trump in true form as he addresses the congress. and why a bay area spa is getting backlash for trying to host ladies night. plus, fire stations shut down over a budget crisis in oakland will soon be back open. plus, a pair of astronauts
1:39 am
who was stuck in space are finally getting ready to come back. from kpix this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hi, i'm sara donchey. well, we have never known president trump to pull punches, and tonight his speech to congress and the nation was met with roaring applause from republicans and heckling and protest from democrats. it was his first address to congress of his second term, and depending on your beliefs you probably walked away from it feeling exactly how you did before. partisanship was alive and well tonight. the lines were clearly drawn. >> in fact, it has been stated by many that the first month of our presidency -- it's our presidency -- is the most successful in the history of our nation. by many. >> so the president talked for
1:40 am
an hour and 40 minutes, but some of the fiery moments happened before the speech even really got started. did you catch that? new mexico democratic representative melanie stansbury held up a sign as trump walked into the chamber that said this is not normal. there it is on your screen. republican representative lance gooden of texas reached across the aisle, like the literal sense, not figuratively reached across the aisle, to rip it from her hands. >> we won the popular vote by big numbers and won counties in our country. >> usa, usa, usa, usa, us a,
1:41 am
usa. >> yeah, the division was a visual situation as well as an audible one. republicans stood up and chanted. they were trying to drown out texas democrat al green after he started heckling the president. he was standing there in that shot you saw a moment ago. the congressman was later ordered to be removed. he went outside, told reporters that he was refusing to sit to send a message to the president over potential cuts to medicaid. >> i have people who are very fearful. these are poor people, and they have only medicaid in their lives when it comes to their healthcare. and i will have to note that his budget calls for deep cuts in medicaid. he needs to save medicaid, protect it. >> obviously, republicans in the chamber seem to be thrilled. elissa slotkin delivered the democrats response, warning of president trump's, quote, reckless approach. cbs news correspondent erica brown has the latest on the democratic response and other moments from
1:42 am
the president's address you might have missed. >> reporter: president trump got an enthusiastic welcome from republicans in the house chamber and an icy one from democrats as he addressed a joint session of congress. >> we have accomplished more in 43 days than most administrations accomplished in four years or eight years. >> reporter: the speech had just started when texas democratic representative al green repeatedly interrupted the president. he was escorted out. trump's address came less than 24 hours after tariffs on imports from mexico, canada, and china went into effect, triggering retaliatory measures and tumbling stocks on wall street. some economists have warned that tariffs could eventually raise prices. >> tariffs are about making america rich again and making america great again. and it's happening and it will happen rather quickly. >> reporter: trump touched on russia's war with ukraine, following his contentious
1:43 am
meeting with ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy. >> it's time to end this senseless war. you have to talk to both sides. >> reporter: with elon musk in attendance, the president endorsed his department of government efficiency and slashing the size of the federal government. some democratic lawmakers invited fired workers to watch the speech. >> everybody here, everyone this side, appreciates it i believe. >> reporter: trump's overall theme was renewal of the american dream, and he returned to the signature issue of his campaign, border security. >> we quickly achieved the lowest numbers of illegal border crossers ever recorded. >> reporter: michigan freshman senator elissa slotkin delivered the democratic response. >> america wants change, but there's a responsible way to make change and a reckless way. and we can make that change without forgetting who we are as a country and as a democracy. >> reporter: senior administration officials told cbs news trump was heavily involved in the writing of his speech, making his own edits.
1:44 am
>> so how will this all play out politically in the weeks to come? i talked to political analyst caroline heldman about the speech and what democrats might learn about it. what about the voters on the fence but voted for the president, how do you think they took his message tonight? >> well, i think this was classic trump, right? he went through every possible policy imaginable, trans issues, culture war, iminauguration, the economy, ukraine, you name it. he had a lot of inaccuracies, as trump is known to do. he peppered it with humor, so i'm assuming, not that polls matter too much, but i'm assuming that a lot of american who is watched that speech thought it was really great. i will say, though, that he is underwater in terms of his handling of the economy and he did not give specifics. and i was imagining that he would do that, because that was the job he had tonight.
1:45 am
he did not tell the american public how he is going to lower their everyday prices. >> what about the voters who supported it who may be affected by some of his policies right out of the gate. i'm talking about doge specifically. obviously tariffs have given the economy a kind of big scare, you could say. do you think he did a good enough job of sort of calming nerves when it came to people losing their jobs because of the sweeping change or people who are concerned about the economy, as you mentioned before. >> i don't think trump did what he needed to do in terms of calming folks about the economy. this is the day he passed tariff, 25% from canada and mexico and up to 20% from china, and we know the stock market is plummeting. we know that bloomberg is now saying cars might be an extra $12,000. we know that, you know, 60% of our crude oil imports are coming from canada so our prices at the pump are going to go up. our fruits and veggies from mexico,
1:46 am
the cost of our food is going to go up. the ceo of target came out and said as much. and he's not alone. i think that trump really needs to address that and address it immediately. i mean, this is something that "the wall street journal" has called a dumb move, right, these tariffs. and they are a conservative organization. so i think trump has a lot of work to do and he did not do that tonight. >> for as many people who were watching this and were happy about what they were seeing and excited about some of the change that he promises to bring to the country, there were other people, half the country presumably, that were probably not happy at all to hear some of the things the president was saying. do you think that the democrats reaction in the room, obviously we saw one member kicked out, some were holding up sign, some were heckling a little bit, do you think that that sent the message that democratic voters wanted to hear from their party who they are looking to for, i suppose, some
1:47 am
kind of resistance here. >> sara, you hit the nail on the head, that was for a democratic audience. trump was pitching to his audience. he was throwing red meat, not playing across the aisle here, especially with the culture war issues. the democrats were doing the only thing they can do. this historic moment where a member is removed, representative green. and you see the signs popping up. the pink suits to protest reproductive rights and women's rights during women's history month with the members of the democratic caucus, women's democratic caucus. it was, you know, kind of a little desperate in the sense that democrats don't have anything they can do because even though donald trump does not have a mandate, he has every branch of government, even if by the skin of his teeth, which means that democrats are completely out of power. >> much more to talk about in the days ahead. thank you for your time. >> and to that end i have created the brand new department of government efficiency. doge.
1:48 am
perhaps you've heard of it. perhaps. which is headed by elon musk who is in the gallery tonight. >> this was surprising, either elon musk got this big shout-out tonight during the joint address. musk has been, of course, the public face of doge since it started working to cut government spending. thousands of government workers have been fired since president trump took office. now democrats say they want accountability. house oversight committee members plan to demand they turn over documents and information about elon musk's potential conflicts of interest and the firings. that news as the administration is said to be considering selling off or closing hundreds of federal properties, including fbi head quarters and the departments of justice, veterans affairs, and labor. some people are being asked to come back to
1:49 am
work immediately. some cdc workers say they were sent emails earlier today rescinding termination letters from just weeks ago. one laid off worker said the message apologized for the disruption and asked them to head back to the office tomorrow. to another vote we're keeping our eye on in the bay area, voters weighed in on measure a that would give the county board of supervisors the power to remove christina corpus. more than 85% of people voted yes on the measure thus far. if measure a passes, four out of the five supervisors would have to vote to remove her. corpus came under fire last year after an independent report accused her of corruption and abuse of power among other misconduct-related issues. the sheriff has strongly disputed those findings. a spa in san francisco is taking some heat after they tried to plan a special event. >> offer them to us every day. we're not any different than
1:50 am
the other individuals. >> why offerings for a lady's night sparked controversy. plus, some good news in oakland with fire stations set to re-open soon, the fight ahead as the city faces a major budget crisis. sprinkles this morning but a wave of light to moderate rain moving up from the south as we head through the rest of tonight, which means pretty good potential for al least a damp wednesday morning commute. this is not going to lead to any kind of flooding threat. track the rain over the next couple of days and look at the full seven-day outlook coming up, first alert weather. >> paul, thanks. and two astronauts could finally be coming home after nearly a year in space. why they say they're ready for the next mission.

1:53 am
ogh thank you. for bacon that just won't quit, gotta be wendy's. a boycott against a bathhouse in san francisco that protesters say has policies that exclude transgender people. our kelsi thorud spoke with some of the protesters who insist it's a sign of a troubling trend in the country. >> reporter: a group of transgender rights advocates are calling for a boycott of a san francisco spa they say is
1:54 am
enacting anti-trans exclusionary policies. >> it's exclusion, it's discrimination. it goes against everything i came here for. >> reporter: she says she was told she would not be allowed to participate in a lady's night unless she remained clothed at all times inside the clothing optional spa. >> i came from alabama specifically to escape that type of prejudice and hate. i got here and i found out this city has just as much of it. >> reporter: the russian bathhouse offers one woman's only night one men's only night each month. on their website, they say the nights are to, quote, shelter religious preferences of women and men in their community. therefore, they limit participation to sex assigned at birth. >> it kind of set off some alarm bells for me, because in a lot of slavic -- like prechristian slavic culture there was a lot of -- gender and sexuality was
1:55 am
much more fluid than -- and it was put down by the christians. but even without all that, there are a lot of catholic, orthodox, jewish, and muslim allies, if not trans themselves. >> reporter: she herself is of slavic origin. to try and reach a compromise, the spa put out a statement saying they will have an inclusionary night and another cultural and religious women's night, where only those assigned female at birth will be allowed in. jordan says that's no compromise at all. >> that response is really discriminatory when you think about it. because if you had a night where you excluded, say, a certain race, that would not fly. and we're just saying that it won't fly -- it won't fly that trans exclusive nights won't fly. >> offer them to us every day. we're not any different than
1:56 am
the other individuals. >> reporter: dakota rose austin says the controversy at the spa seems to be just another example of what she says is an increase in anti-trans policies across the country. >> as latinos, as trans, as queer, as african american, the fear and charged now. if you've weaponized dei and affirmative action and all these other things that were in benefit of everyone in america and you've weaponized them against us, now i'm in fear. >> reporter: protesters plan to continue to picket outside of the spa until they change their policy allowing trans customers every night of the month. in oakland, four fire stations that were supposed to close down will stay open after all. three stations already closed will open their doors again also. councilmembers said last month they found $8 million just lying around that could be used to save the stations, and today the council passed a
1:57 am
resolution to re-open stations 10, 25, and 28. they'll only be open through june when the new fiscal year begins. any cuts that come later could be deeper than what the city is dealing with now. >> oaklanders will die if they have to wait for emergency services. that is a fact. houses will burn to the ground. this is not me being melodramatic. these are facts. as far as pitting one group against each other, this is a zero sum game, there's only so much money to go around. if it was up to me i would keep every station fully staffed and open. that is my goal. >> both the fire union and the police union have accused the other of overspending by millions of dollars on overtime, but they are also pointing fingers at the city, blaming them for budget misalignment. first alert weather powered by kia. learn more at kia.com. kia, movement that inspires.
1:58 am
>> all right, sometimes when it's not like fully robustly raining, i do have to check with you. >> yeah, did it rain? >> did it rain? was that rain or was that something -- >> somebody washing their windshield somewhere. >> was that a seagull misfortune? >> i would hope you would know that one. >> i didn't have time to check. >> we're going to feel rain tomorrow, seagulls or no. let's take a look at the big picture pattern here. the majority of the moisture with this system is directed toward the central coast and southern california and the southern half of the state desperately needs the moisture. there are parts of southern california at record dry levels at this point in the rainy season. and we're getting pretty late in the rainy season. the northern fringe brings some rain to the bay area, it's just going to be a little more robust to our south. let's talk about the local perspective here. and we're going to take a look at the radar simulation as we head through tonight and through 10:00 tomorrow morning as that rain is going to be making its way up from the south. we are
1:59 am
going to see likely a wet commute, especially along and south of i-80. this pushes the rain farther north than that. i would use i-80 as is dividing line between not much rain at all and rain that gets heavier the farther south you go. kind of the opposite pattern we're used to. has to do with the trajectory, the direction from which the storm is coming. 10:00 tomorrow morning through 8:00 tomorrow evening, the rain moves off to the east. and we get into kind of a dry break from midday through much of the afternoon. still a couple of pop-up showers possible. and we're not done with the storm system at that point as we go through 6:00 a.m. thursday, we are going to see more scattered showers developing and the upper levels of the atmosphere are going to be cold enough that the snow level's going to drop down to around 3,000 feet or so. a little frosting of snow on the peaks around the bay area thursday morning. and that cold level -- cold upper air level does mean that we're going to be seeing unstable air in place, which brings in the possibility of pop-up thunderstorms on thursday. those are few and far
2:00 am
between. just an unsettled pattern is going to continue for the next couple of days. and then things continue to settle down as we finish off the forecast and head through the end of the workweek. how much rain are we talking about? let's take a look at the and forecast amounts from that same forecast model. just a few hundredths inches of rain in all likelihood. the amounts go up farther to the south. even if you cut these numbers in half, and this is the most aggressive forecast model in terms of bringing rain to the north, but still a good soaking rain. which we still do need at this point in the rainy season. and this would help places like livermore, san jose. the wind is going to be a factor tomorrow as well, especially in the afternoon and early evening. that stands out on our every six-hour wind chart here. 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. that's when 20 to 30-mile-an-hour gusts are going to be a bit more widespread. enough to move you around on the road a little bit,
2:01 am
not enough for a weather advisory. the amounts go up as you go up in elevation as usual, and especially south of u.s. 50 given the southern path of this storm. those areas farther to the south more likely to pick up a foot, maybe two feet of total snowfall. not done with the rain chances either. let's take a look at the seven-day forecast. after a few dry days, friday, saturday, and sunday, with temperatures reaching up into the 60s across most of the bay area, inland spots hitting the upper 60s. a rainy pattern early next week. even signs that might be associated with a low-end atmospheric river. something we'll continue to monitor. for now it's the last two days of the seven-day forecast. too soon to be worried about that, vern? >> all right, straight ahead in sports, high school basketball, state championship tournament open for business. we've got a school making its state run debut. and this wasn't steph curry's first rodeo at madison square garden. another trip to the big apple for number 30, and
2:02 am
he did not disappoint.

so the warriors have not always looked good this season, but when they look good, they look great, especially now. >> we just talked about curry last night and what he did in orlando. we sound like fan girl and fan boy every time we talk about it. >> how can we not be? even people who aren't warriors fans are fans of curry. >> they got entertainment tonight. a less than 100% steph curry was not going to keep him from playing madison square garden, no, no, no he owns that building. tweaked right ankle or not, not with a career record of 11-1 in midtown manhattan between seventh and eighth. actress/singer jennifer hudson paid for those seats, took a pass off of her face. and she looked stunned. over to the action. and steph curry. brightest star on the floor. hit an early three and then tripped over some fans here. tweaked his

in buffalo with a change. macklin celebrini and will smith in the same line. and it paid off. third period, celebrini hit his spot and put san jose up 4-2 with 12 minutes to play. then a few minutes later, here came smith, got his chance. break away score and what the? sharks won it with a four-goal third period explosion 6-2. san jose has won back-to-back games for the first time since early january. oh, we build up to this. cif state basketball championship. first timer broke its postseason ice tonight. west valley division five play. bulldogs and alhambra blew holes in the west valley defense. look at gillespie. blew holes and went glass. bulldogs went on a 12-3 run to finish the game. they won

their cif debut. second round on thursday. oh, by the way, happy 35th birthday to draymond green. he finished with eight points, eight assists, seven rebounds, and he will be celebrating as the team hangs out in new york tonight before facing the nets on thursday. where else would you want to be to celebrate your birthday? right there at the bright lights, big city. >> i mean, 35 in the nba is getting up there. i did not realize we were the same age, though. >> oh, is that right? >> yeah. i'm actually i think a year older than him. >> let's just hoist an imaginary one to him. >> cheers to you, draymond. we'll have one after work. all right, we've all had to work overtime, especially vern, but what about getting stuck at your job for nine extra months?

after months and months and months and months of waiting two nasa astronauts stuck on board the international space station are finally getting to come back to earth. >> do they want to? >> i would imagine they do. well, never mind. butch wilmore and sunny williams blasted off last june for what was supposed to be a ten-day mission. but the boeing starliner had so many issues getting to the station nasa said it was too dangerous
2:11 am
to make the return trip to earth. finally after almost a year instead of a week or so, the next iss crew lifts off march 12th. they will spend a week together before wilmore and williams leave. >> the hardest part is, you know, having the folks on the ground have to not know exactly when we're coming back. it's been a roller coaster for them probably a little bit more so than for us. >> we are just fortunate and thankful, though, that we have seats and we'll be coming home riding the plasma, splashing down in the ocean, so that's what we're looking for. >> now, you might think that butch and suni would be ready to say no to future missions after this debacle, but they say they're ready to suit up again. >> hey, we're going to the moon and mars, that's what my plan is. >> i'll be right beside butch if that's the case. >> no. williams said she is most excited to get back on the ground and reunite with her dogs. >> they are going to knock her down. >> i know. i know.
2:12 am
>> that long. >> time in space, that could be worse, and i'm dating myself, they could be on gilligan's island. and they'd still be there. >> i'd rather the island. >> just a ten-day cruise. >> i don't know, anyway, i feel by hairclub. when it comes to fighting hair loss, one name stands above the rest, hairclub, the number-one trusted name in fighting hair loss. stay tuned to hear about film and tv star frankie muniz's personal hairclub experience, and other inspiring stories of the lives that have been changed by hairclub. including a few celebrity surprises. - there's nothing quite like driving with the top down. the feeling of the wind rushing through your hair is pretty exhilarating. and that's not something i could always say. hi, i'm frankie muniz. you may know me from film, tv, or even the racetrack, but what you might not know is that i faced my own battle with hair loss. i'd like to share with you my story of how i was losing my hair, and for years couldn't find the right solution until the day i found hairclub. it's a story that stars my favorite co-star ever.
