winter wallop. a powerful storm blasts the midwest with heavy snow and blizzard conditions creating a dangerous mess on the roads. final warning, president trump gives hamas an ultimatum after meeting with former hostages at the white house. first, a tariff reprieve. automakers are getting a one-month exemption from the trump administration on cars coming into the u.s. from mexico and canada. good morning. i'm michael george. while u.s. automakers can breathe a sigh of relief, at least temporarily, the white house says tariffs on other goods are still on. as president trump pushes for a russia-ukraine peace deal, cbs news has learned the u.s. has halted vital intelligence sharing with ukraine. cbs' jarred hill joins us with more. a lot to talk about. first off, good morning. let's start with the tariffs. day two of the trade war, and it seems like the president is already willing to hold off on

at least some of these tariffs. >> eporter: that's right. one of the top automakers, ford, told the "associated press" they would last ten days before production would shut down because of the tariffs. the vice president said some other industries are looking for exemptions. the question, though, will this 30-day pause be enough. president donald trump is pumping the brakes on his auto tariffs giving a one-month pause for the big three u.s. carmakers. >> they may be asked and the president is happy to do it. >> reporter: trump is pushing ford, general motors, and stellantis to shift all production to the u.s. as early fallout builds from his new 25% tariffs on canada and mexico, plus 20% on goods from china. the president said the countries are not doing enough to stop the flow of fentanyl into the u.s. a point trump says he reiterated to canadian prime minister justin trudeau in a 50-minute call yesterday. trudeau and leaders of the other nations responded with tariffs

of their own. on russia's war in ukraine, one day after president trump said ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy sent him a letter -- >> the letter reads, ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. >> reporter: cbs news learned the trump administration has stopped sharing intelligence with ukraine that could help the country target russian forces. hoe -- show some defensive intel is still being shared. no word on when the intelligence sharing or the suspension on military aid to ukraine could resume. meanwhile amid sweeping federal cuts and the government shutdown deadline in less than two weeks, the president's senior adviser elon musk met with lawmakers on capitol hill about enshrining doge cuts into law. >> lot of opportunities to improve experiences in the government. >> reporter: cbs news has obtained a memo showing the department of veterans affairs is planning to slash more than 70,000 workers. overnight a judge extended her pause on trump cuts to medical research funding.

that decision came just hours after the supreme court said that foreign aid will continue flowing while that case works its way through the courts. >> all right. jarred hill. thanks for joining us. powerful storms that killed several people in mississippi and nebraska are taking their toll in other parts of the country. they brought heavy snow and blizzard conditions to the midwest. in iowa whiteout conditions are being blamed for 68 crashes including a pileup on an interstate outside des moines. drivers were forced to abandon their cars in heavy snow. parts of minnesota received a foot of snow or more. at least 70 crashes were reported throughout the state. federal prosecutors charged 12 chinese nationals in an alleged hacking-for-hire operation. the justice department filed criminal charges against law enforcement officers, mercenary hackers, and employees of a private hacking company. they're accused of targeting dissidents, news organizations, and u.s. agencies including the defense intelligence agency.

some were allegedly paid by the chinese government. well, a key suspect in the deadly 2021 terror attack on u.s. military members at the kabul airport was ordered to be held in custody during his first court appearance in virginia. mohammad sharifullah, a longtime isis-k operative, was arrested in pakistan over the weekend. prosecutors say he admitted plotting the route used by the suicide bomber and involvement inother attacks. the fbi says he was freed from prison two weeks before the abbey gate bombing which killed 13 u.s. service members and about 170 afghans during the chaotic u.s. withdrawal from afghanistan. president donald trump issued a new and what he calls final ultimatum to hamas -- immediately release all remaining hostages or be destroyed. the warning comes after trump met with eight former hostages

including some just freed from captiviti. the trump administration also confirmed u.s. officials are in direct negotiations with hamas. it's long been u.s. policy to not directly talk to the terror group. the cease-fire between israel and hamas remains uncertain. after the first phase ended, israel has stopped all aid from entering gaza. hamas is believed to be holding about 24 living hostages including american edan alexander, as well as the bodies of at least 35 others. the mayors of four major u.s. cities were in the hot seat on capitol hill for a hearing about so-called sanctuary cities. policies that limit cooperation with immigrations and customs enforcement. the hearing comes as president trump continues to make the mass deportations of undocumented immigrants a cornerstone of his second term. cbs' erica brown reports from capitol hill. do you solemnly -- >> reporter: the mayors of new york, denver, chicago, and boston testified before a house committee wednesday where

republican lawmakers railed against so-called sanctuary city laws which limit local cooperation with immigration and customs enforcement or i.c.e. >> sanctuary cities make us all live safe and are a public safety nightmare. >> reporter: republicans argue the city's policies regarding undocumented immigrants allow dangerous criminals to go free, but the democratic mayors pushed back on the idea that their cities are less safe. >> the sanctuary city classification does not mean our city will ever be a safe haven for violent criminals. >> did not bring a wave of crime to denver. in fact, crime went down. >> reporter: the mayors contend the policies, which are at odds with the trump administration's mass deportation agenda, are necessary to ensure undocumented immigrants can report crimes and access services without fear. >> those fears cause witnesses and victims to avoid cooperating with police. >> a city that's scared is not a city that's safe. >> reporter: some democrats on the committee called out mayor

snow. rescuers haven't been able to try to reach the skiers because of ongoing avalanche risks. a man is suspected of swallowing stolen jewelry, and a child kidnapping case is solved. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "denver gazette" says a boy was found alive in colorado more than seven years after he was abducted. authorities say the boy was kidnapped allegedly by his mother in atlanta back in 2017 following the custody dispute. the boy who is now 14 years old was found by deputies last month along with another child in a vehicle outside a home as they were investigating a burglary. the mother and a man were arrested on charges including kidnapping, forgery, and identity theft. the kidnapping was the subject of an episode of netflix's "unsolved mysteries." the "los angeles times" says los angeles county is suing southern california edison for the devastating eaton fire.

the lawsuit claims the utility's equipment sparked the january fire which destroyed about 9,000 homes and killed 17 people. it seeks to cover costs and damages in the fire which the county estimates will total hundreds of millions of dollars. southern california edison says the cause has not been determined, but acknowledged earlier that its equipment may have played a role. and the "orlando sentinel" says a man was arrested after possibly swallowing nearly $800,000 in jewelry allegedly stolen from an orlando mall. surveillance video shows the suspect grabbing two pairs of diamond earrings from a tiffany's store. state troopers tracked his car and pulled him over 300 miles away. they say that's when he swallowed several items. an x-ray of his stomach showed police what they believe are the earrings. an affidavit says the items would be collected after they passed through his system. what, are they going to sell them now? still ahead, a fish out of water story.
