that newsom's right ward shift is less surprising if you don't take him at his words he plans to run for president. >> gavin can show he is the politically mature political adult within the party that puts him front and center for 2028. >> reporter: the trump administration hasn't just stopped sending weapons and money to ukraine. the cia now says it is not helping with intelligence gathering anymore either. as well as their efforts in helping ukraine in the fight against russia. this is the latest move in president trump's bid to pressure ukraine into accepting a cease fire deal. >> i think what's going to happen is ukraine wants to make a deal because i don't think they have a choice. i also think russia wants to make a deal. because in a certain different way that only i know, only i know, they have no choice either. >> reporter: earlier today, the special envoy for ukraine and

russia said ukrainians brought the pause on themselves. ukraine and the u.s. are expected to hold talks on how to end the war. and in the three years since war broke out, things are as uncertain as ever in ukraine. one novato man has seen some of the damage firsthand. christian thwait, since he has been helping out overseas, driving a truck full of supplies right into war torn ukraine. our andrea nakano has his incredible story. >> it was very nice to get that. >> reporter: christian has been watching the war unfold in ukraine since 2022. for years he has thought about how he can help the people of the eastern european country. >> sending money is one thing. but maybe there are other skills i could bring to the table. and get a better understanding of it. >> reporter: so he reached out to a volunteer group in his home

country of england called driving ukraine. within weeks he was driving this blue truck full of supplies across europe into western ukraine. driving roughly 14 hours a day. >> countries i read about, history i have read about. being there, i wasn't nervous about anything happening. it is a little outside my comfort zone. >> reporter: the trucks and ambulances his convoy transported were packed with anything from medical supplies to children's books. >> they waved us in. and clapped. and you just felt, you know, these people are so grateful. >> reporter: honest journey, the thoughts that stick with him the most are the conversations with ukrainians. alex owned a bar at the russian border but has been fighting on the front lines since the war started. thuaits had two sons serve in afghanistan and worries how the war will impact alex.

>> i asked are you okay? you are seeing a lot of bad stuff. he said yeah. i'm fine. i don't have ptsd. but i thought, you don't know. but, you know. i just hope it doesn't happen to him one day. >> reporter: he is already planning his next trip to be part of another convoy later in the spring. he is hopeful one day there will be peace in the region. until then, he wants to do what he can to help ukrainians live day-to-day life as normal as possible. >> it struck me as a place where they are standing up for something which is very precious these days you know. freedom and independence. and not wanting to be invaded by a next door neighbor country and really being incredibly so brave. oakland police are searching for a woman kidnapped in broad daylight. neighbors caught the whole thing on camera. and a

warning, it is disturbing. >> someone help. >> scary just watching that. this happened on 98th avenue back on tuesday. police say this victim was walking when the suspect tried to hit her with the car. the suspect got out, and punched the woman before he grabbed her and carried her into the car and went westbound. police tell us this was not a random act. and they have confirmed that the suspect and the victim do know each other. police have found the car which they say was stolen but the victim and the suspect have not been found as of yet. in san francisco, another night, another sfpd raid is part of a new strategy to break up open air drug markets in the city. this time they were focusing on the mission. at 16th and mission to be exact. people who live and work nearby say things have been bad there lately. but, just a few hours after the raid, some of the problems police specifically pushed out were right back

again. our lauren toms heard from a nearby business owner who is questioning whether the strategy works. at the corner of 16th and mission, sfpd officers moved in overnight raiding the well known hub for illicit activity. within hours it quickly slid back into its daily scenes of illegal vending and drug use. and nearby store owner who asked us not to show his face watched it all return. frustrated but not surprised. >> everybody is coming over here. so what's the difference? the other place you pop up and make it hard for our business to run. >> reporter: the overnight raid is part of a push by law enforcement to curb illegal vending. sfpd seized nearly 30 grand of narcotics but he has seen some improvement. one

operation is not enough to keep illegal activity at bay. >> it needs to be better you know? as you see, the police is over there. like you mention, it's like, zombies walking around. >> reporter: it's not just happening at 16th and mission. law enforcement is ramping up resources to target drug and crime hot spots across the city. but some say the move does more to displace users and dealers sending the problems to other parts of the city. police chief bill scott says the long term solution lies with consistency. >> when we are there, things look nice and clean. as soon as we leave, they come back. the key will be, we have to deploy resource to prevent the disorder in the first place. so yes. it will not be consistency. >> reporter: the message played out one week earlier. jefferson square park where officers made 86 arrests and seized over a

pound of narcotics. of those arrested, 11 were charged with misdemeanor drug offenses according to the district attorney and just two were charged with felonies. but for people like rom who live and work in the heart of it all, the effort is quickly replaced by the reality that change on this troubled corner rarely lasts. >> it makes a bit of difference, but not a lot. a couple of hours. when they left, they came back again and did the same thing. >> reporter: he even wrote a letter to the mayor pleading for help outside his store front. telling reporters thursday this is just the start of the effort. >> there is displacement. we understand that. but we are not going to tolerate people moving from one place to the other. because we will be following them everywhere they go. >> reporter: but as the cycle repeats itself on 16th and mission, the question rom and neighbors now ask, how long before the next raid and when

will it make a difference? >> some neighbors have complained the drug activity increased after an earlier crackdown on 6th street and soma. the city set up an outdoor triage center for drug users and homeless. there have been more than 100 arrests, dozens have been placed in shelters. and another bay area university making big cuts to deal with big budget problems. >> we wanted to fight for this program. we want to do, to see if we can keep it going. >> the sports teams now on the chopping block at sf state and delayed flights. debris showers. pretty chaotic view across florida and nearby islands after a spacex launch failed again. a couple of leftover showers. even the thunderstorm earlier today. and also another cool day with temperatures only reaching the 50s and the low 60s . but we are back to normal temperatures, maybe slightly

san francisco state is the latest university to slash some of its sports programs. the school's athletic task force recommended they cut their ncaa teams. it comes as governor newsom is proposing a nearly 8% cut to the csu budget. 44 students will be impacted. women's indoor track and field will be cut. baseball. and men's soccer. student athletes tell us they were caught off guard and now they are just trying to make the most out of the season. >> there is no warning which hurt us all. tugged on the heart strings. >> all my actions will be for them. i will help the seniors have the most they can have this year. help them find baseball homes. >> the school says it will be working with student athletes to

maintain any existing scholarships and will help those who wish to transfer to continue playing. san francisco state president lynn mahoni said i want to thank the coaches who have been committed to the success of our student athletes. sadly, though, we must take this important step to give our athletics program an opportunity for long term sustainability. i sincerely hope the economic outlook improves for the future. if this sounds familiar, it is because sonoma state is facing a similar situation. one we have reported on extensively. the school is cutting all of its sports programs to get ahead of a $24 million shortfall. student athletes and faculty have held multiple protests. the school is set to lay off staff and cut some economic departments and majors. spacex says it suffered a second failure in a row after

its star ship broke apart during a test flight. this was the view from marathon, florida where pieces lit up the sky and debris rained down. >> what is that? >> oh. >> here's a shot from the bahamas. the star ship launched from texas but it lost contact with spacex just minutes after liftoff. the flight was supposed to last an hour while debris showered south florida. the faa issued ground stops at several airports including miami and orlando. >> before getting the notification. 10 minutes sitting here. we get the call over the speakerphone or the announcement that there's been a rocket launch that has lost satellite, lost touch. >> that doesn't sound good when you are waiting on the tarmac. the ground stops have since been

spotty showers yesterday and tuesday, yesterday and today. continued to move further and further off to the east. now i have the road stuck in my head. we have clear skies and the light blue there, that's a little bit of fog showing up along the coast. the emphasis there is on a little bit of fog. this will not be a widespread issue as we head through the rest of tonight. as we look outside from the top of sales force tower, things are looking just fine at the moment. a look outside from the top of the mark hopkins hotel. check of current temperatures. there is no fog visible anywhere. there it is. there is our view. no clouds overhead. temperatures are in the 40s . across the board right now. everybody has cooled down rapidly. 43 degrees the cool spots in livermore and santa rosa. those will be the cold spots ton map early tomorrow morning dipping down into the mid 30s . we are not going to be fog free as we head through the rest of tonight but it will be pretty confined. a little of it along the coast. this is not

going to have a big inimpact on the morning commute. the fog dissipating so the sun's energy instead of going to dissipate into the fog, it will go into warming up the atmosphere from that rather chilly start. temperatures in the santa clara valley will start off in the low 40s . that's a little below normal. but not bad. 35 degrees in livermore the cold spot across the entire bay area. mostly lo 40s around the bay. mostly mid 40s for the north bay. here always the cold spot as the cold air collects in some of those valleys but still several degrees above freezing and we will warm up. santa rosa the warm spots, getting close to 70 degrees. tomorrow is not the warmest day. we will not be dramatically warmer on saturday. but a degree or two above friday's high temperatures. the inland spots have a better chance of approaching 70 degrees. nice recovery from 35 degrees to 65 in the afternoon. we have less than 12 hours of

daylight and warming up by 30 degrees. the atmosphere is doing a pretty good job of recovering from the cold start. let's talk about the approach of the next chance of rain. there's usually some differences in the long range forecast models. the american model and the european model, we show those side by side to highlight the uncertainty of the forecast. but they are telling a remarkably similar story with the first batch of moisture missing us to the south. there are still several days down the line. similar to the chance of showers on tuesday that seem to be dwindling. that is not dwindling. this is going to be a low end atmospheric river. likely to impact the bay area by wednesday bringing in heavier rain. outside chances some flooding and the potential for some gusty winds that might do a little bit of minor damage. but that moves out and we see lingering showers on thursday. it's nice when the long range forecast models are telling the same story. we will see anywhere from just over an inch of rain in some of the rain shadow spots to four inches of rain in the

santa cruz mountains. in general, that system will bring us about an inch-and-a-half to two-and-a-half inches of rain on a widespread basis. in the course of 24 to 36 hours which is why we are already watching for at least the potential of localized flooding. we'll worry about that. enjoy the nice weather. upper 60s for highs inland. rainy pattern accompanied by a pretty sharp drop in temperatures. by the middle of next week. inland spots will only make it up into the mid 50s . a similar trend for for the coast. but temperatures will not be as warm the next few days. then drop to the low 60s , the low 50s by next thursday. temperatures bay side. middle ground. temperatures reaching the mid 60s through the weekend. and backing down as the rainy weather makes its return for the middle of march. vern? straight ahead in sports, the impossible dream continues for an east bay school as a state basketball playoff first timer. and the steph curry show

yes, it's time to scope out the conditions with the latest toyota tahoe report. let's see the weather. getting into a little fresh snow. never a bad thing in the month of march. it's what the sierra resorts picked up. you are looking at snow total snowfall. a few inches of snow. it is enough to freshen up the slopes for the second weekend in march. conditions improve on the roads as well. now that the winter weather advisory has expired. once you are there, the weather looks really nice. a lot of sunshine saturday and sunday. with morning lows in the 20s .
