winter strikes back before we spring forward. details in our forecast. and later, volkswagen gives the classic new buzz. >> this is volkswagen's all new electric bus. i'm carter evans in los angeles. it is inspired by these icons. what do the purists think about it? >> announcer: this is the cbs weekend news from new york. >> good evening. i'm jericka duncan. thank you for joining us on this saturday. we begin with the war in ukraine and intensifying attacks by russia in the wake of president trump's decision to cut off u.s. military aid and intelligence support to kyiv. today in washington, critics of those moves unfurled a giant ukrainian flag the ellipse outside the white house. the latest russian attacks on ukraine targeted homes and infrastructure. cbs's reporter --

>> reporter: this residential building was gutted in the attack which also saw several vehicles torched and left a trail of smoldering debris following the wave of russian drone and ballistic missile strikes on the town in the eastern kharkiv region. at least 25 people were killed and many more were wounded. [ speaking in a global language ] we are all hostages of this situation. we can't do anything. civilian are dying. the southern port city of odesa was also targeted overnight. the intense wave of kremlin attacks came just 24 hours after the u.s. suspended some satellite imagery and intelligence sharing with ukraine. and only days after the trump administration announced it had halted billions in weapons shipments to the country. a rapid and dramatic shift in u.s. support for the war that had one ukrainian military

that's are driving people crazy. >> reporter: the tariff whip lash and stubborn inflation are weighing on consumers as well. last month consumer confidence had its largest monthly decline since august of 2021. all of it stressing industries from automotive to agriculture. >> i feel like once the prices go up, they'll never come back down. >> reporter: president trump has insisted temporary pain will lead to long-term gainful economists aren't so sure. >> i think investors are coming to the realization. no. this trade war is here to stay. the longer it is, the more damage it will do to businesses, their earnings, the economy, and to stock prices. >> reporter: and the tariffs president trump enacted in his first term were much narrower, negatively impacting farmers and manufacturing. this time around, these tariffs are on a much larger scale, affecting more than $1.3 trillion in goods. >> from wall street, thank you. there is no end to the tariff war with canada.

president trump is now taking aim at dairy and lumber imports but canada is fighting back. cbs's ed o'keefe is in the capital of ottawa with the latest on the tumultuous trade war. ed? >> reporter: the latest threats add to just mounting anger across this country. not directed at the american people so much as the american president. with boo's and boycotts, canadians are voicing their displeasure with president trump. they're not amused by his punishing tariffser on aggressive taunts. >> so i think canada will be a serious contender to be our 51st state. >> not a snow ball's chance in hell. >> reporter: in grocery stores, not coulnsumers have become patriotic patrons. >> i decided tonight by-products because they're from the u.s. >> reporter: in liquor stores, anything american is taken out.

who once led the central banks of canada and britain. the other contender is a woman who used to work with trudeau. whoever wins becomes prime minister in the coming days and will have to call a general election by october. >> all right. thank you so much. tonight president trump is backing a house republican plan to avert a government shutdown next week. he's also playing down reports of infighting between some of his cabinet members and adviser elon musk. cbs's nicole killian is in west palm beach with the details. good evening to you. >> reporter: good evening, jericka. tonight president trump continues to insist that elon musk and his secretary of state marco rubio have a great relationship and he says anything to the contrary is false. president trump returned to miss mar-a-lago resort after leaving the white house for the weekend with elon musk not far from his side. the special government employee is now at the center of an explosive meeting thursday night according to the new york time. musk clashed with several trump

officials, including secretary of state marco rubio over the department of government efficiency to cut federal spending. >> elon gets along great with marco and they're both doing a fantastic job. there is no clash. >> reporter: the president and musk tamped down tensions with musk calling it a very productive meeting. but earlier in the week, he faced a mixed reception on capitol hill with some lawmakers urging him to pump the brakes on massive agency cuts after facing back lash back home. have you been getting a lot of calls to your office about some of these cuts? >> from both sides, yes. people have questions, concerns. also people that are happy with what has been found. >> reporter: since doge's creation, more than 28,000 federal employees have been terminated according to a cbs news tracker. fearing they could be next, some workers attend ad job fair saturday outside the nation's capital. >> many of us may be fired

illegally. we'll still have to pay the bills. >> reporter: as doge looks to streamline parts of the federal government, cbs news has learned that the department of health and human services has granted access to some doge associates to a child support and database that contains sensitive income information. jericka? >> thanks. tonight a new health update for pope francis. the vatican says he is, quote, showing gradual slight improvement. the 88-year-old has been in the hospital 28 days battling double pneumonia. and today in london, crowds cheered a man holding a palestinian flag who climbed the tower where the clock big ben is housed. authorities used a crane as they tried to talk him down. so far he's still there and posting to social media. in scotland, pro palestinian vandals used red paint to deface the clubhouse that president trump's turn berry golf resort.

they wrote gaza is not for sale on the lawn. turning to the weather in the united states, today, gusty winds fueled the flames. did you see there? multiple wildfires. smoke closed two highways. tonight the governor issuing a state of emergency. and even though time springs ahead at 2:00 a.m. tomorrow, winter is not done with us. andrew has the latest. andrew? >> reporter: yeah, good evening. we talked about those massive wind gusts across long island. over 40-mile-per-hour wind gusts. areas like montauk fueling the fires. thankfully by sunday night, that will be done. winter across the pan handle. texas and oklahoma with snow through about midnight tonight and then this system moves across the southeast and gives us a chance to finally get in on some heavy rain across portions of florida and georgia. we have severe weather possibilities for sunday. heavy rain starts to move in across the carolinas by monday. the good news is, that's across
