trump continues to defend his aggressive tariff policies and said the policies could plunge the country into recession. derick waller joins us. a lot of people voted for president trump to bring prices down fast. now he's saying americans may have to wait for policies to pay off. >> that's right. you may remember on the campaign trail that trump vowed to bring down grocery prices on day one. well, now at day 49, prices are even higher. with the tariff threats new concerns the economy could be headed toward a recession. >> we're going to have jobs, open factories, it's going to be great. >> reporter: president trump downplaying concerns about the possibility of a recession but also not ruling it out. >> i hate to predict things like that. there is a period of transition because what we're doing is very big. >> reporter: the comments after a week of whiplash on wall street. triggered by threats to plelt new retaliatory reciprocal

tariffs on mexico and canada including on auto imports. canada's incoming foreign minister, former banker mark carney, commented on the possibility of a trade war sunday. >> the canadian government has rightly retaliated and is rightly retaliating with our own tariffs that will have maximum impact in the united states and minimum impact in canada. >> reporter: patience appears to be wearing thin on capitol hill, especially among democrats. >> tariffs an important tool in the toolkit. the way he's handling tariffs is the way he's handling everything else right now. >> reporter: and the possibility of a government shutdown friday has also added to the economic uncertainty. >> could happen. i mean, the democrats want that. they want to destroy the country. >> reporter: the president is backing a republican bill to extend funding through the end of the year. that includes an increase in defense spending. but it's unclear whether house speaker mike johnson has enough votes to pass it. >> i think we're going to be learning over the next 24 hours what's in it and what's not in

it. >> we're not going to have to wait long to find out. the house could vote as early as tuesday. >> thank you for joining us. a single engine plane with five people on board crashed and burst into flames in the parking lot of a retirement community in pennsylvania. >> tower, beechcraft bonanza, open door, we need to return for landing. >> that's the voice of the pilot moments before the beechcraft bonanza went down just south of lancaster airport. five people on the plane survived and were taken to the hospital. right now their conditions are unknown. no one on the ground was hurt. about a dozen vehicles in the parking lot were damaged. this is just the latest in a series of crashes in the last couple months. firefighters on new york's long island have knocked down a wind-driven brush fire in a wooded area in westhampton. governor kathy hochul declared a state of emergency saturday after four separate fires broke out across the pine barrens region.

they've been contained. she said people had to be evacuated. two commercial buildings were damaged. the cause under investigation. syria is seeing some of its worst violence since former president bashar al assad was ousted in december. more than 1,000 people, mostly civilians, are estimated to have been killed over the past few days after clashes erupted following an ambush on a syrian security patrol by gunmen loyal to assad. rights groups have reported dozens of revenge killings. diplomats from the u.s. and russia have asked the u.n. security council to meet behind closed doors today. israel is expected to send a delegation to qatar today to try to advance talks on extending the fragile cease-fire with hamas. it comes after israel cut off the electricity supply in gaza, impacting a desalination plant that produces drinking water for part of the gaza strip. israel also stopped all aid deliveries.

meanwhile, the white house envoy for hostage affairs called recent talks with hamas productive, expressing hope for a deal within weeks that would release all the hostages, not just the americans. new jersey native edan alexander is the only living american hostage. four others are believed to be dead. federal immigration agents arrested a palestinian graduate student who helped lead last year's protests at columbia university in new york. mahmoud khalil's attorney says he was arrested yesterday at his university apartment. the attorney said the agents claimed they were acting on state department orders to revoke his student visa and green card. it comes after the trump administration cut $400 million in federal funding for columbia because of what the government describes as the school's failure to stop anti-semitism on campus. the feds are starting to look into the price of eggs and whether the bird flu is solely to blame. we'll have more on that in "moneywatch." but not all poultry farms are suffering

as kati weis found during a visit to a farm in alabama. 900 laying here, 700 -- >> reporter: this northern alabama farm has been in keith's family for five generations. his business is booming because he has eggs, a commodity many farms can't produce. >> never had this many phone calls. >> reporter: last year he had to kill his flock after they got sick with a bacterial infection. >> symptoms near the avian flu. had to kill the flock and start over. >> reporter: because his birds weren't infected with the bird flu, he didn't qualify for money to replace their flocks. a cbs news analysis of federal data found since 2020 the u.s. paid $1.1 million to fight the

killing the flocks to prevent the spread of the bird flu. despite the effort to get farms back on track prices hiked more than 15% in january. >> definitely a question about when usda should get involved. >> reporter: to try to stop the rise of egg prices, the usda plans to spend $1 billion more tax dollars to fight the bird flu, including $400 million to farmers to buy new chickens. >> we have to be diligent. >> reporter: frank singleton with wayne sanderson farms is glad the usda is helping. the usda paid them $600,000 over the last two years after calling three bird flu exposed flocks. do you think that's a fair use of taxpayer money? >> it's a partnership with the farmers and the consumer to make sure we can continue to feed america. >> reporter: with bird flu fallout expected at least another year, southard says it's important to protect small farms. >> takes away the big consolidation that's happened and spreads out the risk. >> reporter: kati weis, cbs news, madison, alabama.

armed man near the white house. authorities say they spotted the man and his car yesterday after d.c. police tipped off the secret service about an allegedly suicidal man who traveled from indiana. they say he brandished a gun, got into a confrontation, and was shot. he was taken to a hospital. no word now on his condition. president trump was in florida at the time. cnn says a young man last seen with a missing university of pittsburgh student in the dominican republic is being questioned by authorities as the land and sea search continues. 20-year-old indian national sudiksha konaki was last seen early thursday on a beach near the resort where she was staying during a spring break trip. she went to the beach with female friends from the school and other guys they met. he said her friends came back, but his daughter did not. and alabama.com said there
