>> he's just keeping his team cool and relaxed because they're sitting right next to the olympic champions. but you know what, what better shot at your olympic debut to see how good you've become throughout this year. >> ready for the start of the second heat of the men's eight. the reigning olympic champions out of lane one. team usa in 2 and poland clost most importantly for that german side on the far side in lane 1, five of the eight are returning from london. it is a strong team. >> it is a strong team. but they have been showing a little weakness in some world cup action leading into the olympics. if i was the americans, i would think, you know what, it's now or never. and they are just charging off the line level with the german crew.
8:15 am
base pace will be the deciding factor on who gets that first mental edge of putting their bow into the lead. >> the u.s. off to a good start in the middle in the yellow boat. the team usa men's eight competitors in this second heat. again the winner will go this is quite the race between usa and germany. >> team usa has had quite a dramatic year. they had to train all year not knowing if they were going to qualify for the olympics. they had to go to the last qualification round and that is a pressure situation. you know what they did? they won that pressure situation. so now it's on the line. winner goes directly to final and they're about three feet behind germany going to the
8:16 am
that means that german coxswain is looking over and saying, germans, we've got three feet on the americans, let's transition into our base speed and they have a really long commanding rhythm in that german boat at the top of your screen. >> and there they go, here they go. the germans starting to find their rhythm right now. team usa in the middle and poland third. only the winner advances. >> what team usa has to do right now is control their and they have been waiting all week. a little bit scattered of transferring their heat time. they were supposed to race in the afternoon but due to weather delay now they're racing in the morning. these athletes are ready, they just have to control their emotions, they have to get to work and start making inches into the german lead. there's still plenty of time to do so. >> mary, boat to boat, germany

eight on the german side returning, having seven first-time olympians on the u.s. squad, how much of a difference does that make as far as consistency and bonding? >> experience is golden because they have a little bit more experience handling the stress of the olympics. they have the stress of not trying to go out too hard, burn out, waste energy in the first thousand. but, as you can see, the americans, they did calm down a little bit. we're seeing the germans, look at those l the deck, sending it, levering it. they're a machine right now, having nothing stopping them in their way. martin is looking over in between two seat and three seat but the americans have held them for the last ten strokes. they're not losing any more and that's exactly what stan is saying. the germans aren't moving. we are in a perfect position to
8:18 am
winner takes all, meaning it goes straight to the final on saturday. >> what's stan doing, how often is he looking across and how often are you feeding that information to the team? >> they are the filter. it's their job to look left, look right, filter the chaos that's happening outside of them and choosing the right amount of work to say, you know what, we're in second. but if we do this, if we start now backing each other up, we can start start moving. but you know what, that's exactly what martin sour is saying. we're in the lead, coming into the last 500, let's turn it on. >> 1500 meter mark, 500 to go. germany with less than a boat length advantage over team usa in the second heat of the men's eight. every time i look at the water today, mary, i can't believe the stark contrast to yesterday with

being canceled for the first time since '04. much better conditions today. >> nothing is going to hold back these athletes. they're ready to race in any kind of conditions. and what's the emotions they're feeling right now is full-on pride. they have one job to do and that's to back each other up and not let each other down and that's what this german crew is. they're on a mission to qualify for the final and make sure that they are in a position to get on that podium. >> in the women's eight, as everybody is saying, it's usa's to lose. in the men's eight, is it germany's to lose? >> it's germany's to lose, but great britain is right behind them because they want to take it. >> winner goes through to race for gold on saturday. germany now with a full boat length lead over team usa. coming to the line in the final 100 meters or so, team usa nicely in second. to stay in touch with germany maybe encouraging as they face a repechage race to make that
8:20 am
on making that final. coming to the line, germany will cruise to victory and go straight through to race for gold in the 2016 olympics. team usa second, ahead of poland. so as they recover and you reflect immediately on team usa's performance, what are your thoughts? >> that's exactly the race they needed under their belt. i think they would have liked more overlap with germany, but racing against defending olympic that they're going to take away a lot of confidence going into the repechage. >> so germany with a commanding victory, a very smooth race, but

on saturday, the first day of rowing competition, high winds created some problems including the serbian boat. they were back in action this morning as we go back to leigh diffley and mary whipple. repechage and it is another opportunity to go through to the next phase for the likes of the serbian pair who you may have seen on the opening day of competition flip their boat. it's also another opportunity for team usa. this is a must-deliver event. top three advance to the semifinals. lane one on the far side is the serbian pair.
8:24 am
netherlands in 3 and spain in 4. of the four boats, the top three will advance through to the semifinals. >> you know what's going on through all these men's heads is it is flat water today. it's a different story than the first time they had their debut race during their heat. but with calmer waters, they are super confident and they are charging off the line. you saw the serbian crew sneak a peek to their left because all they have to do is make sure that they don't cross for the next round. >> from the top of your screen, the second boat down is team usa and on the left-hand side of that boat in the stroke seat is nauri. it is a must-deliver event for the men's pair duo in this relatively new men's pair duo in this repechage.
8:25 am

they're sticking like glue to the dutch. you can just see the determination in naurig's face. this is a duo that came together late in the olympic selection but they laid down one of the fastest times the u.s. has ever seen during the olympic trials and they're here to show what they did today. >> into this second 500. approaching the halfway mark of the men's dutch clearly in moment at the moment. on the far side it's the serbian duo trying to make up for lost ground after flipping their boat and given special dispensation to take part in this repechage because they did not come across the line in that race. >> i think they kind of got shot out the back, but their rhythm was really commanding and
8:27 am
>> at the 1,000 meter mark halfway through, it is the dutch boat over team usa and spain has moved into third. that is a transfer position. team usa hanging tough, though, staying with the dutch boat. >> the dutch is commanding but team usa is inching their way, closing the gap between the dutch and themselves. everyone is fighting. it's going to be a battle to not be last in this. remember, top three go to semifinal, a and b, and the dutch crew are currently in the lead. you see the pain on their face setting the rhythm and commanding it. they're coming into the second half of the race and that's when rowers think did i go out too hard? am i going to pay for this?
8:28 am
am i going to respond in a correct way that i don't ditch my partner? >> there's anders weiss. it's a family affair. and the serbians are surging. look at lane 1, serbia is now challenging the netherlands. for naurig, his fiancee, snyder has advanced. they have to stay in the top three to go through to the semifinals. >> that was a huge push by the serbian crew but you saw anders and naurig responded and they're trying to go with the momentum the serbians created. >> 1500 meter mark and the netherlands are in front by perhaps a quarter of a boat
8:29 am
the heat race and the event organizers decided to give them a special dispensation to get into this repechage. normally you have to cross the line to qualify for the next phase, they did not. their shell remained upside down until it was rescued. and now they're in with a chance of transferring to the semifinals. >> it is just a commanding lead, the serbian crew are slowly moving through the dutch, but the americans are holding on to the momentum of serbia. if you're side by side with someone, you can feel that energy. when you feel that other boat go, you have to respond and go with them. side by side the dutch and the serbians, and there comes the americans, they're inching their bow closer, making a good enough distance between them and spain. >> and it's made it clear cut now, hasn't it. spain really dropping off. serbia, the netherlands and team
