at an team u.s.a. she has tons of memories to share. our very own team 12's monique caught up with her and spoke with her tonight. >> reporter: skinner flew in this morning. tonight she talked with us about her time in rio and what's she's ex tighted to do -- excited to do next. fresh off the plane from the olympics, she is back home reflecting on her whirlwind trip to rio. >> it was cool degree the different cultures and being around there with everyone. >> reporter: she placed 4th at the trials, but still narrowly missed making the team. she traveled to rio as an altern at which means training as hard in case team u.s.a. called on her. >> definitely knowing i could have a chance to go in there just like this is my last shot to give it my all. if they need me i'll be ready to go. >> she was there cheering them on. >> we're in the stands shaking, just hoping the best that we

>> and they did. >> they came out with their medals and that was so cool. we got to take pictures with them. they were excited to see us. >> she never got to wear her leotard in a competition, it was a once in a people lifetime experience. after years and dedication, she also looking forward to some free time and a few indulgences. >> you want to watch what you eat, but at the same time, i'm going to pig out, eat -- i love french fries i'm going to be eating a lot of that. >> she's weighing her option when's it comes to how much longer she'll be competing. she does plan to attend the university of utah. reporting from sky harbor, 12 news. it's been a big night for one of the newest faces of u.s. swimming, days after picking up a gold medal, simone manuel was back at it. she won a medal in the 50 meter freestyle and swam the

relay earning her second gold medal of the games. she is ready to help inspire the next generation of swimmer no matter what their skin color. as she won her first gold medal, simone manuel made history, complicated history. >> this medal is not just for me. it's for some of the african- americans that have come before me and been inspirations and mentors to me. >> she's the first female black wants to get an example. >> for the people who come behind me and get into the sport -- >> she doesn't shy away from issues in our country. >> especially what's going on in the world today, just -- i mean w some of the issues in police brie brew tall. >> i her race should not be how she's described. >> the titled of black swimmer makes it sound like i'm not supposed to be able to win a medal or break records, and that's not true. >> her mind-set, she learned

>> that doesn't define who you are. it's part of who you are. it's a very real part of who you are. >> she will forever be a marker of history and she defines what it means to be on olympic athlete. >> just hearing your national anthem and knowing that you gave your heart into that race and you represented your country in the best way you know how, i think that meant a lot. >> definitely one of the most memorable parts of this games so far of the rio games. simone will leave with a pair of go silver medals. joe. switching gears, a dog is dead tonight after a barricade situation. a swat team fired off tear gas and stormed a home to end a stand-off. the sheriff's office says the team was forced to take down the dog in the process. brian is in mesa with new details. >> reporter: not only is one man in custody after barricading himself inside a home in mesa, but sheriff's deputies had to shoot and kill his pit bull to save one of

mauled. >> you're looking at a k9 dog is also an officer. it's an extension of our deputies, and the life of that dog was being threatened. >> the sheriff's department says this man shot at his girlfriend. >> when deputies arrived on scene, we did have the girlfriend out of the home and safe. she stated that shots were fired at her. she is okay and unharmed. >> reporter: her boyfriend house for two hours before deputies forced their way in. that's when three dogs attacked deputies and their canine. >> cop cars showing up everywhere. >> they heard the original gunshot, bub they do not know the -- but they do not know the couple personally. >> everyone knows everyone from the end to the end on the street going that way. those were the only people we didn't know. >> reporter: amber did know

>> there's nothing else you can do. i have a pit bull. it's sad they had to shoot it, but they had to. >> reporter: as for the suspect. he's in custody charged with aggravated assault and domestic violence. while the sheriffs canine is being treated for bite wounds. 12 news. he can hadding your hot headlines now, the investigation begins in a deadly officer-involved shooting in phoenix. this morning, police shot and killed a man wanted in connection to a recent homicide. cornered the suspect, he drew a knife and cut an officer. the officer fired his weapon killing the suspect. the officer suffered a sliced hand but will be okay. he's now on administrative leave. at number two, tonight, mesa police identified a man killed by officers last night. he is 22-year-old carrillo. it happened near country club drive. the suspect was armed, but it's unclear if he fired any shots. and number three, fire guts

afternoon. the flames starting in a kitchen and quickly moving into the attic. the heat from the fire destroyed the roof causing extensive damage. thankfully no one was hurt. vanessa is back with us from rio and she's following the next generation of journalists from the valley covering every aspect of the olympics. and team 12 one-on-one with the one and only cardinals wide receiver larry fitzgerald. parts of louisiana completely covered by flood waters after two feet of rain fell in just one day. matt. no rain here in the valley. the sun, just a lot of heat out there. the temperatures will continue to raise. i'll let you know -- rise.

with an event the size of the olympics, there are thousands of journalists of lifts here from all -- here from all over the world. amongst this group, there's a very select few actually from asu's school getting the chance of a lifetime to come here to rio as well and get a taste of what some real life reporting experience is all about. it's in the olympic the streets of rio, and inside training facilities like this one where future journalists from arizona are being bred. three of them are all students at the school of journalist and they're in rio earning their chops. >> i can't put it into words. we've been able to interview athletes, access to practices. it's not always easy, but i think that's with everything. we've had so many experiences smear it's awesome. >> reporter: awesome and real. these three are part of a

beginning to end. although not officially graduated just yet, these reporters, writers, and journalists are already turning stories that are turning heads. >> it's getting close to the worked class athletes and having a chance to talk to him, hear their story and write about them so other people can understand where they're coming from. that's been the greatest experience so far for me. then just also being in this great city of rio. it's not as bad as people make it out to be. >> reporter: it's a eastbound lead them toward a career filled with passion and dedication. >> i get to report. i get to take photos. i get to do videos that are being published around all of the arizona websites from a u.s.a. ventral and -- az central and abc and pac 12. i didn't think i would be able to get close and personal to the attelets. i thought i would be in the stands taking photo, but i get to be up next to them talking to them. >> reporter: this group is

vehicles and believe it or not, the rain is continuing to fall in that particular region. in fact, the latest radar and satellite, look at all of this rain that continues to come down and moves off to the east. when you look at the estimated rainfall totals, anywhere you see that gray shading from new orleans back to the west, that is areas that have seen over 20 inches of rainfall, a very large area here that we're talking about. back here at home, not a whole lot to talk about. we did see an out flow conditions this evening. a little bit of dust down in the south part of the valley. the state, it is now dry out there because here's the pattern. we've been talking about it for the last couple days. high pressure sitting over california and that's bringing some dryer air down in from the north and that means tomorrow, almost the exact same thing that we saw today. the high temperature right at about where we were today, 108 is our forecast high temperature. no chance of thunderstorms here in the valley. that sun will set at 7:15 and

really going to stick around over the next couple days. our monsoon high is over texas and we're dealing with this one. the good news is, by the middle of the week, that's going to shift and we're going to see thunderstorm chances. highest chances in the white mountains coming in at a 2 in northern arizona, a 1 here and in southwestern arizo looks like for you. 109 by monday and there comes the storm chances wednesday, thursday, and friday continuing right on into the weekend. that's weather. football season is now in full swing. cam's back with a historic night in the nfl. ever a 7,903 daybreak, football back in la first home game for the la rams back to
