through flagstaff right now, they are very weak, moving toward the northeast. but later on for us today here's a breakdown in the valley in the sun. winds 5 to 15 punishment it is dry out there look at the high temperatures 104 but isn't too bad monique. the average this time of the year is 103. of course that sun will set at 6:50 later on today. thanks matt. hermine, the first hurricane in 11 years to make landfall in florida is now the storm churning across the southeast, taking aim at the east coast. there is growing concern the storm could intensify over the weekend reaching hurricane status again. jay gray has our story from savannah, georgia. >> reporter: the first hit may have been the most violent, the wind ripping apart buildings and pulling down trees and power lines. the rain and storm surge 12 feet in some areas pushing water into places it is not supposed to be. daylight revealing the extent

miles across the strike zone. >> this hasn't happened in years. >> reporter: more than a decade since a hurricane made landfall in florida. as the hurricane moved through our state more than 253,000 in florida experienced power loss. >> reporter: inland, hermine lost a bit of its power but very little of its punch. a tropical storm as it pushed into georgia continuing shred most everything in its path. >> my wife heard a lot of noise around 2:15. i think blown or something. >> reporter: the storm gathered speed as it crossed into the carolinas, in a path that forecasters say could take it into the waters of the atlantic. growing again to hurricane strength as it skirts the eastern seaboard. threatening areas like cape cod, where tourists are trying to get in at least one more day of fun. >> we are going to enjoy what we can. >> reporter: while for residents bracing for the storm. >> we are putting extra lines on the boats and stuff like that. >> reporter: this long weekend

jay gray, nbc news, savannah, georgia. a couple getting married in north carolina isn't letting hermine put a stop to their party as the outer banks braces for the full brunt of tropical storm hermine, they went ahead and took their wedding photos on the beach. the couple are taking the storm in stride. they came to the carolinas to get married on the beach and while they might not be saying i do in front of the waves this weekend they figured ey we know how much arizona people love great weather photos. now to a 12 news exclusive. parents getting ready for the new school year are shocked for find out the school had shut down before warning. parents didn't find out until the day before classes were supposed to start and this isn't the first time hillcrest academy has overdone it. >> reporter: gated up and overrun with weeds. this is not how students and

academy in mesa a few weeks into the school year. the charter school notifying them it was closing 24 hours before the first day of school. >> they sold it very well as a really great option. >> reporter: for amber, its closure feels like deja vu. in 2013 students were returning from christmas break when a school shocked everyone by suddenly shutting down. >> the kids were absolutely devastated. even now my son, it i something he'll never forget. >> this time in mesa more than 120 students forced to find a new school. >> reporter: it does put them in breach of their contract and opens them up to disciplinary action. >> reporter: whitney chavez said the board knew hillcrest was having financial issues but warned them not to enroll students if they were not going to open. >> we are very disappointed this happened. >> reporter: in a letter to parents, hillcrest decided

failing -- cited failing health of the principal as a reason for closing. the board is currently reviewing complaints from parents. >> i am a little bit more wary about charter schools. that was a very eye opening experience. >> reporter: and the board will discuss hillcrest academy's closing at their next meeting which could end with the school's charter being revoked. phoenix police telling 12 news they have ec shooter case, 400 of those coming after the reward jumped to $2500. investigators say keep the tips coming in. the serial street shooter is responsible for seven deaths over the past few months. self-driving cars aren't just a thing you see in the movies any more. coming up next on 12 weekend today, everything you need to know about them.

welcome back everyone. self-driving cars are coming and there is a chance you already have a car witch your driveway today. joe wisen felder shows us how this works in this week's segment of driving smart. >> reporter: the days when your car will pick you up, drive you to a destination and drop you off at the door are many years away. but the building blocks the full autonomy, may already be in your own car in the form of

adaptive cruise control watches the car in front of you and maintains a gap, even if that car low as done or speeds up. buttons on the steering wheel let you choose how closely you want to follow. the best systems will bring you all the way to a stop. to turn it back on again tap the accelerator or press the resume button on the steering wheel. lane keeping aid or assist will steer the car back into your lane using a camera that looks at the lane markings ahead you. where some systems are corrective and jerky, others keep you centered in the lane. our 2016 volvo has a feature called pilot assist that does the steering and the acceleration and braking for you. in this model, it works up to only about 30 miles per hour. in the next model year and in a new sedan the company says it will work all the way up to highway speeds. most cars that have any kind of lane departure prevention require to you take the wheel

51 degrees in flagstaff. 55 for you over in greer. you are going to warm up to probably the 70s, maybe even the low 80s later on today but get outside and enjoy these morning temperatures. not a whole lot going on here in the desert southwest. the rest of the country seeing active weather up to the north and we are still dealing with tropical storm hermine. you can see its way off the coast. all the rain into washington and new jersey a lot of rain later on today. the good news is things are starting to dry out. some locations over 10 inches of rainfall as the storm moves through. back here in the state, here's what we are looking at, all that drown that is extremely dry air that is going to tilter into the state. things are going to dry out

that is going to bring a lot of dry air to the region. a big monsoon area of high pressure over texas. we want this over the four corners. it is nowhere near that now. here comes the jet stream dropping down into the region. all those thunderstorm chances over in new mexico. even the high country tomorrow looking at a 10% chance of rain out there. for today here's a look at the monsoon meter. a 3 in in northern arizona, a 1 in southeastern arizona as well. southwest arizona a 0 on the monsoon meter. the highs in the state 106 in yuma, 106, check out the temperature in flagstaff in the 70s. hard to beat that the grand canyon 78. nice out there 89 for page. looking at your 7-day forecast and keeping in mind the average high for this time of year is

when you compare our temperatures to the rest of the country right now, it might look a little warm here in the valley. 83 degrees right now, head over to los angeles, 67 right now. 57 in san francisco, there are still warm spots out there, miami sitting at 83, new orleans 86 there as well. if you are heading to the big sun devil versus lumber jacks game today here's the forecast for the pregame .10 1 out there. make sure you do kickoff at 7:45 and 95 degrees. when asu wins the game about 89 degrees out there. pretty nice for game day on this saturday evening. but for the rest of the valley here's a look at your forecast. 87 degrees by 9:00. just a few high clouds out there, winds 5 to 15 miles per hour. no outdoor plans should be canceled. you can see no chance of rain in our forecast. dry conditions out there. by 9:00 monique 94 degrees out

into the 70s by midnight. scientists say global warming is killing coral reefs. in an attempt to help the problem researchers have developed a new method to regrow the reefs. john rogers reports. >> reporter: sights like this are what snorkelers near and far seek out. lovely coral. but sadly all over the world coral reefs are dying, victims rising ocean temperatures from global warming. >> we talk about them as the ocean's rain forest. they are one of the most diverse habitats on the planet. >> reporter: they support a multi-billion dollars tourism industry. the reefs are home to fish we eat and see every day and they provide a barrier occur hurricanes and storm surge. scientists say around 40% of the world's coral has died. >> corals have been in trouble

vaughn is trying to save them. he and his team have developed a method to regrow coral. they raised tiny pieces of coral in labs and then place these fragments on to dead coral skeletons, where they'll multiply and grow. >> which we thought would take hundreds of years but we have started growing corals in record time. >> reporter: with this new method an entire reef can restored in 1 to 3 years. it is a resource we can't afford to lose. >> the value is pretty immeasurable. >> reporter: these researchers are regrowing species of coral that can withstand the higher water temperatures the oceans are experiencing. >> more may reign scientists have already started adopting this new technique in reefs throughout the caribbean. some variety ofent man's little snacks are being

why the principal is resigning and no one is answering at the high school. a woman from tucson born without arms is suing universal orlando for discrimination. jessica cox says the florida theme park refused to let her on any of its rides because she doesn't have arms. jessica is using her story to remind others not to make assumptions based on appearance. >> reporter: 33-year-old jessica cox is a thrill seeker. >> i am the first armless pilot. i scuba dive. i am a surfer. i have a black belt in taekwon do. >> reporter: worn without arms she charged the world with her feet. can't isn't in her vocabulary. >> to be rejected on every single ride that moves, there

a thing as home warranties out there. >> so yeah, this is also something critical not only for buyers but also for sellers. you know, after you buy a home that first year, a lot of it is doesn't making the home their own. they want to paint, decorate and do fun things. but the reality is homes are living and breathing. from the day after that happens, things are going to age and need repair down the road. just because you did a home inspon rest of the home's life. so by having a home warranty. typically you can negotiate your first year in the home that the seller would pay once you purchase. that is a nice insurance policy so if something like your ac goes out or pool equipment goes out it could be covered. sometimes they are around $70 per incident. but if your ac goes out it is a

of thousands of dollars. keep in mind with a home warranty since you didn't get one, it is not too late, you can purchase one anytime. the other thing that is important is a lot of people think oh i did the home inspection, i'm getting the warranty so i can get all this stuff fixed after i buy the home. the warranty does not cover preexisting conditions. if you have something that breaks and sometimes things break the day after you move in, again the home is living and breathing if you something breaks. the warranty company is going to want to see a copy and if something was repaired they are going to want to see receipts. keep in mind also home warranty companies really like to fix things, not replace. some people say oh it is an old ac, the warranty company is going to want to keep that ac going as long as possible. they are not going to be as

get rain every single day as you likely know. but that puts you 200ths of an inch above average. more than likely we are going to drop below average but there is a chance of rain moving back into our forecast later on this week. we'll get to that in a second. here's a look at your drought monitor currently. almost 6 million people in arizona living in drought. 69% of the state in a moderate drought. the yuma area and south of tucson sitting drought. 23% of the state is in that category. the good news. 0% of the state in exceptional drought. an interesting pattern is beginning to set up. really not a whole lot going on, we are dealing with tropical storm hermine moving off the coast. but look toward our west. we are starting to see that line right there. that is actually a winter type storm that is going to first dry us out. you can see that here on water vapor.

move in directly toward arizona. we are actually tracking a tropical storm system to our south. doesn't look like much off the coast of mexico. that is going to move toward baja and a lot of the moisture could work its way toward arizona by the middle of the week. for today not a whole lot going on the monsoon meter sitting at a 3 in the write mountains a 2 in ft. collins then arizona a 1 for southeastern arizona. here's a look at the state to the north. we are going to stay dry almost on the cool side as we move in toward wednesday. the monsoon moisture toward our south. we are going to see the chance of thunderstorms that move in to our forecast.

hood. one local company saying you need to be preventative, especially during monsoon. >> if you are not on top of it, it is going to cost you a lot more money. >> reporter: mender dough rivera a local auto shop owner who sees dust related car problems especially during the summer months. advice for when a storm blows through, even if your car is sitting in the driveway, first look at your air filter. >> if your air filter gets clogged up and you haven't changed it all year to begin it is going to affect your driving. you are going to have poor engine performance, vehicles are going to be more sluggish. >> next check the belts around the motor. >> it will get between the belt and what the belt rides on and wear down the life of the belt also. >> reporter: also look if any dust is collecting around the brake lines. this can legitimaten the life of your brakes. then check to make sure there is no dirt obstructing the radiator or front grill. >> anticipate the problem.

suddenly you need a cornea transplant. it happened to one valley woman and we have a warning for anyone wearing contact lenses. >> reporter: your contacts are a lot like a sponge. so it can easily absorb bacteria. what happened next to casey fisher is something she wants everyone to learn from. >> i told her this is very bad. >> reporter: casey fisher can barely see out of her right eye. >> within 24 hours my eye was swollen shut. i was in the hospital, and the infection was so bad, that i contact lens was in my eye. >> it was a big corneal ulcer. it is a bacterial infection and it was eating through the tissue. >> reporter: casey's ophthalmologist believes her contact lenses soaked up bacteria when she went swimming in a pool a few weeks ago. a shock to casey. >> i have been good at leaning them. i have worn contacts for about 30 years. >> reporter: now she will most likely need a corneal transplant to restore her vision.

about the dew point all morning. >> it is a little sticky out there, i have to admit. but it is going to be gone soon and then winter is coming. look at this shot. here's the shot over downtown phoenix. >> looking out over downtown phoenix toward south mountain. you notice a little bit of haze but the air quality in the good range today, no ozone high pollution advisories in effect for the valley. temperatures 85 degrees right no that is probably the highest number you are going to see over the next couple of days. much drier air will filter into the region from the southwest. our thunderstorm chances are basically gone for the entire holiday weekend. no point to cancel outdoor plans. if you are tired of the very warm temperatures we have had over the past couple of months, well that red line, that shows you today our average high temperature is 103. starting today through december, look how quickly

drop. in fact we drop all the way to 65 degrees from an average high temperature by the time we move into the middle portion of december. so a little bit of something to look forward to there. if you are heading out to the high country, check out your forecast, 77 degrees today at the grand canyon. just about a 10% chance of thunderstorms out there. the rest of the high country take a road trip up north, check out flagstaff. 73 from flagstaff on your sunday. going to be warmer coming in both your saturday and sunday with the slight chance of thunderstorms out there. here's what's happening, two storm systems we are tracking the first one is moving through california right now. that is the one that is going to bring the very dry air into our region and of course the other storm we are tracking is hurricane hermine. actually a tropical storm now. just moving off the coast of the united states. but look at all that rain it is spreading in toward new jersey, washington, you are going to

well. 65 miles per hour, strengthening just a little bit as it moves off to the coast in warmer water. keep in mind it would become a hurricane again 74 miles per hour or greater and look where it is going to stay. it is going to move off the coast but then linger all the way through tuesday into wednesday and that is why boston, you could see a lot of rainfall, even a storm surge could be high over the weekend into early portions of next week. but for us, look at your monsoon meter, coming in to a three here in the white mountains, a 1 in the valley. in southeast arizona. very low numbers on the monsoon meter. not really a high threat for thunderstorms around the entire state. here's futurecast really low as you what is going to happen. there is the high pressure sitting directly over texas going to continue moving toward the east as the storm system dropping in toward arizona going to bring very dry conditions. look down to the south. moisture beginning to build by monday. that should move in toward arizona by wednesday thursday and friday, leading to the
