police. bryan west has details near 36th and thomas. >> reporter: phoenix police say it got started yesterday at 4 when officers responded to a call. a woman says her son was being aing strangely and described him as psychotic and threatening people with a large sword. officers searched the area for an hour for man but he was gone had they got her and at 10 half the night the mom called back and said he was and said he was back. for a hour they tried to talk to the man he he came out with a large sword tied to the hand and charged at officers. police say they tried to subdue him with tasers and stun bag rounds and when this failed they shot him. >> one of the hardest things i ever had to do there's nothing you can do it's helplessness and it could have been prevented and stopped it could have been handled in a different way. >> you can't can expect to come out with a sword attached to
