"early today" starts right now. good morning, everyone. i'm dara brown. breaking news. the ntsb has confirmed it recovered the black box from thursday's deadly crash in hoboken, new jersey. the train's conductor is cooperating with federal investigators. they want to know whether he was fatigued, mechanical failure or speed that led to the crash. a injured, some in serious condition. jay gray is live in hoboken, new jersey, with the latest. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, dara. that black box, a key discovery here. expected to provide some very important information in this investigation. look, most mornings, 15,000 commuters or more pouring through the hoboken station

and investigatos trying to figure out exactly what went wrong. in just minutes, the morning rush unravelled. >> i have heavy structural damage. i have people trapped on the train. major, major tragedy. >> reporter: train 1614 on the new jersey transit line sped into the hoboken station, slamming into and over the bumpers at the end of the track. >> it was just horrific. an explosion of concrete dust, electrical wires. the terminal collapsed falling to the ground along with steel beams, bricks, and shattered glass. a 34-year-old was standing on the platform. the hoboken resident and mom was killed by falling debris. >> we heard people screaming in the first car. they were trapped. they couldn't get out. >> reporter: more than 100 on and off the train were injured, including the engineer, who is said to be cooperating with the national transportation safety board investigation into the crash.

ntsb agents hope to get data from the crash from the train's black box. >> from the event recorder, we hope to get information such as speed and braking. >> reporter: investigators have access to the locomotive, but to this point, structural damage to the station has kept them out of the rest of the train. agents hope to gain access to the rest of the cars later this afternoon. officials say they expect to be to ten days. that's the latest live in hoboken. dara, back to you. >> thank you for that report. >> commuters are also waking up to safety concerns about their daily travels. the ntsb has been demanding an advanced braking system for at least 40 years. miguel almaguer reports. >> reporter: lessons learned. the amtrak derailment in

eight dead and more than 200 injured. a train traveling at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. in california 25 lost their lives, 135 hurt when a commuter train slammed into a freight train in 2008. these just two of the 145 rail line accidents experts could have been prevented with positive train control or ptc. the advanced braking system is designed to automatically stop a ending in head-on collisions. but only 22% of trains currently have the advanced braking system. train travel is still among the safest way to commute, but there are more questions on how to make it safer sooner. miguel almaguer, los angeles. it has been a growing theme this election cycle for publications to break from tradition in their endorsements, and now a big one.
