concerns about campaign contributions his competitor received from two phoenix new times owners now charged with sex trafficking related crimes. >> the $12,500 in contributions came from michael lacey and james larkin who are facing charges for their involvement in backpage.com and its adult classified ads. >> when news broke about the back page case, he was made aware of the contributions and immediately directed his staff to refund the is vulnerable to identity theft because of attack ads by the arpaio campaign. his birth date, social security number and address were clearly visible. >> the arpaio campaign tells 12news including that information on the ad was an honest mistake and ended airing a week ago. in the interest of full disclosure, paul penzone once worked as a 12news security

the earthquake alert in southern california. a swarm of smaller quakes had people there on alert for days but they are not the only ones on shaky ground. people in the middle of the country are seeing a massive spike as quakes as well. >> it comes as fracking or drilling for oil increases. in a series we are calling verify road trip, dade schcter takes a look at if it is a coincidence. >> reporter: in the last five years, earthquakes in up 1,000%. the spike in quakes mirrors the rise of hydraulic fracturing. it is the new way to drill for oil and gas. we are doing more fracking, we are having more earthquakes. the question is, does fracking cause earthquakes? all right, ready to go? >> ready to go! >> reporter: m cia ha coleman is a mother of two who came on the road to ask her own questions and come to her own conclusions about fracking and earthquakes. >> it is a good idea

state side. but, you know, somewhat is it doing to our environment? >> you worried about that? >> yeah. >> reporter: to understand texas earthquakes better, we are not starting in texas. we are taking misha on a four hour trip to oklahoma. ? [ music ] ?? >> ? the wind comes sweeping down the plain ?? >> reporter: compared to texas, oklahoma has more fracking more earthquakes. >> the rumble felt more than four hours away. >> long sustained quake. >> reporter: just this month, a large oklahoma quake shook the ground all the way from texas to illinois. this latest quake was only slightly bigger than the previous state record set here in 2011. mary and joe reneaux were home for that one when their chimney collapsed onto the roof.

you see the walls cracking. >> what was the total damage in dollars? >> our policy was 209,000 and we maxed it out. >> wow. >> reporter: so here is how fracking works. drillers push fluid deep underground under very high pressure. that cracks the rock, the cracks unlock oil and gas trapped inside. the oil and gas then comes up to the surface. >> you think it related to the fracking? >> yeah. i think. i think it caused it. >> reporter: is that true? let's find out from an expert. jefferson chang is oklahoma's state seismologist. >> so, this is our study around the sensor. >> reporter: he shows us this highly sensitive earthquake monitoring station. it sends feedback back from the field to the office. >> so, if we shake it around

>> there it goes. yeah. >> oh wow, look at that. >> the question is, does fracking cause earthquakes? >> the absolute answer to that is yes. fracing does cause earthquakes. but, earthquakes that you will never feel. >> reporter: earthquakes you will never feel, he said, because they are so tiny. but people in oklahoma like mary and joe are certainly feeling some big ones so if it >> the new hypothesis is that it is not fracking, but, waste water disposal. >> reporter: he told us while fracking produces oil and gas, it also brings up massive amounts of underground water that is too dirty to drink. drillers inject that water back underground in waste water disposal wells. the u.s. government says those wells can cause earthquakes. oklahoma is trying to cut down

on injection wells. >> why do you think oklahoma is so proactive with implements these constraint ins. >> we need to come up with this balance so people can still make a living and people that live here can still feel safe in their homes. >> reporter: oklahoma, and the u.s. government, say injection wells cause earthquakes. let's go home now and see what texas has to say. the texas railroad commission regulates oil ryan it isen is a commissioner. he has certained his liveing in the industry. >> do you deny that there is a relationship between waste water disposal and earthquakes? >> i love that question. do you deny. >> there is no question there has been correlation. in other words, there are areas where there has been disposal wells. and, in which has been earthquakes. the challenge is, there is also areas where there are not correlations so, the scientist

>> reporter: in response to the quakes, t texas now collects more information from drillers on seismic events and the legislature has approved $4.5 million to further study the problem. >> here in oklahoma, they is have a reputation of being very proactive. what you are saying about texas is we are studying this and then we will come up with solutions. is there a big difference between the two states? >> we are taking different approaches because we have not seen the major up ti strong. our disposal processes are different. so we have had to take a more analytical approach. so yeah. we don't know the answer in texas. >> reporter: texas does not agree with oklahoma on the cause of earthquakes. but we can all agree no matter how small, it helps to know how one feels. so, last stop for us is the earthquake simulator at the

breaking news as 11 million people are under a hurricane warning in the southeast. >> hurricane matthew has wrecked florida and is now taking aim at georgia and the carolinas. >> jay gray is there in daytona beach florida to see what the storm has done. >> reporter: tonight, matthew continues its assault on the southeast coast. >> we have seen hurricane force winds of over 100 miles an hour. >> reporter: the first hit was florida. violent winds rain sideways and a massive storm surge moving the ocean inland and into homes. >> oh hi gosh guys we should back away. >> reporter: the conditions have been brutal. flood waters swallowing trees and cars. homes and businesses across the strike zone battered and torn apart. more than a million homes don't have power right now. that number expected to climb as matthew turns its attention to georgia and the carolinas. >> we still have hurricane warnings and storm surge

>> reporter: charleston could see some of the worst of it. [ knock at door ] >> fire department! >> reporter: firefighters going door to door urging families to join the hundreds of thousands who have already moved to higher ground. but now, with the storm churning close tore the shoreline, the time to move out is running out. >> the best thing now is to hunker down. stay in a safe place. don't move. don't try to move around. >> reporter: as matthew moves in. jay gr beach. >> the storm is expected to continue to hug the coast and cause major problems across the region through the weekend. but, as meteorologist matt pace explains, it could be downgraded to a category 1 by tomorrow. >> that's right. one of the main reasons for this is the storms really need to be over to water to really keep the energy going and a lot of the it is over the land from north carolina all the way back

[ cheers and applause ] >> in the stands. and on the field. on this night, greenway high turned pink. >> i just think it is great that the whole community is coming together. >> reporter: an entire stad remembering others. a tradition that started six years ago. >> she was a mom to a lot of people. i felt that same way. just the nicest woman ever. and people just loved her. >> reporter: judy dixon was a secretary at greenway for 27 years passing away in 2010. >> she is still in our hearts and our minds every day. >> reporter: lori myers also a secretary at greenway diagnosed

>> reporter: there were surgeries, chemo. lots of prayers. a year after being diagnosed her cancer was in remission. >> that moment is music to your ears. >> reporter: the journey for virginia goes back 36 years. she still remembers hearing the words you have cancer. >> i cried. i cried. a lot. it scared me. i thought maybe my life was over. >> reporter: turns out, it was not even halfway done. one of her sons, now the golf coach at gr sons standing by their moms as a community honors those here and those lost. >> it means a lot, being able to honor the women. >> reporter: if we all stand together, we can make a difference. almost all of us know someone who has fought cancer. kudos to greenway high school. and, the arizona cardinals. and a big shout-out to every woman out there who is battling or has battled breast cancer. kevin kennedy, 12news at 10:00.
