dozens of people were injured, but everyone is expected to recover in this. the train service has been suspended in both directions. now, to our other big story. hurricane matthew's path of destruction is stretching from the carolinas. it's still causing widespread damage. at least 10 people in the u.s. have been killed. hundreds more in haiti where the hurricane hit earlier this we're in south carolina with the latest. >> reporter: tonight, hurricane matthew is smashing north carolina, downgraded to a category 1 storm, it's still powerful enough to render hundreds of roads impassable. the storm took aim at georgia and the carolinas on saturday, dumping torrential rains and creating dangerous conditions.

it has been weakening very quickly. one thing you'll notice, the storm is quickly falling apart. it's considered an extra tropical system. it's transitioning into a storm spreading straight up into new york. it left behind very intense rainfall. look at this. this is the 48-hour estimated rainfall totals. anywhere inside this green box has seen over 5" of rain. some locations in north carolina, over 10 to 15" of rainfall out there. we're talking about the extreme flooding. we had some rain here in the valley as well. details on our forecast coming up in just a bit. tragedy west of the valley tonight. two police officers killed in palm springs, california. another one in the hospital. the police chief says the officers were trying to resolve

they're surrounding the home where the suspect may still be inside. people dressed as clowns and chasing teenagers with baseball bats. it happened last night in the fountain hills area. authorities say this is no laughing matter. >> reporter: that's right, trish. the first of those incidents happening here at fountain park at about this time last night. th from here at golden eagle park. they're taking each of these incidents very seriously. >> very shocking for such a quiet town too. >> reporter: the creepy clown phenomenon hitting close to home for fountain hills residents. >> everybody's carrying pepper spray. i don't know what these clowns were thinking. >> reporter: they've been reported in cities across the valley.

is 92 degrees. the temperatures cool off so quickly at night. 89 still here in phoenix. look at the activity that we saw today. it is continuing over in the eastern side of the state. basically stretching from just to the east all the way back down. if you live in pine side, you'll see a few strong thunderstorms moving through your area. use some caution if you go through there. a lot of clear air moving to the western side of our state. that will quickly push in towards the east as well. check it out. 75 degrees if you're heading out to the susan g. komen race for the cure tomorrow.
