and we're grateful judgement our big story tonight, a beautiful little girl about to turn 3 years old killed while in day care. today the man and woman who ran the unlicensed day care were sentenced in her death. >> savannah cross died four years ago. an autopsy showed she suffered traumatic injuries, a i cute meth exposure and dehydration. the people responsible will spend the next couple of decades locked up in prison. this horrific tragedy who is watching our children and what parents should know before dropping their child off at a day care facility. team 12 dug into the state's regulations and your child's safety. >> reporter: juan for less torres is a dad of three. >> there is not a day that goes by where i don't think about i hope he is okay.

well. they have been happy with the services and they say safety is always on their mind when they think about day care. >> i think the main concern is with employees. you wonder what kind of back checks they have been through. >> reporter: who is watching your child? it is an issue the arizona department of health and services says their top priority. >> all child care personnel, owners as well, have to submit the applications to the department of public safety and obtain a clearance card. >> reporter: the card will only is passed and the status of those cards is also checked during unannounced inspections at least once a year and all licensed facilities must display their credentials and alibied by state regulations. parents are asked to do a walk through all facilities for their child and also do research online. >> one of the resources we have is az care check.com. >> reporter: we asked juan to check out his day care facility

lawyer for that state's child welfare agency when she investigated the school. [ and in a videotape from 1999 he clearly knew of the abusive practices and condoned them. now he would like the say i wasn't mentioned. >> reporter: his employment application with chandler police in 2002 says he was headmaster and executive director of the private school supervising 80 employees. he now says mental health professionals made decisions about care. anything that happened there under your watch? do you regret anything that happened to those teenager ? >> the findings of fact. >> reporter: do you regret anything that happened? >> i regret the fact that this has become an issue in the campaign because it has taken away from the issues that really concern families. >> reporter: the polls indicate his opponent, the democrat is leading their race in the low single digits. you can watch the full

now let's take a look at your hot headlines. starting with a barricade situation in peoria. this impacted an elementary school in the area. tense moments as parents waited for their children to be released. a suspect nearby 78th avenue now and sweet water has barricaded himself inside of a house. there was no immediate threat to students. the police eventually released them to their parents.

have seen a very strange sight in the air today in the east valley. check it out. it is nasa's super guppy. i love the name. this unique-looking plane landed at mesa gateway airport. the soup or guppy is the last of its kind still in use. i mean, that is an odd sight. >> it is. >> it looks like the front of the plane was just kind of chopped off.
