welcome to the 161st 850 members, eight planes and a global mission. this group is arizona proud. >> we are here to protect our state and our nation. >> our octave is to provide inflight refueling anywhere in the world. >> reporter: for 70 years, the 161st refiling wing right here in phoenix has engaged in just situation involving the united states. >> korea, vietnam, berlin. for years now, activities in the middle east. >> reporter: a gas station in the sky. this unit provides fuel to other aircraft midair. >> just the same as you would stop in a gas station on a road trip pushing through. that is what we are able to do in the sky. >> reporter: it allows other aircraft to continue their missions. >> just watch your head. >> reporter: from the ground. >> it is very exciting.

>> reporter: the 161st deploys airmen throughout the year in fact. just a couple of weeks ago, they deployed 70 members on two planes to the middle east. that is where they will serve for the next few months. at sky harbor, stacia naquin, 12news. [ sound of gunfire ] >> gunfire! gunfire! shots fired! now to more hot headlines across video of the terrifying moments an officer was grazed in the head with a bullet. it happened at a shoot-out monday. one officer is chasing a guy violating traffic laws when he turns a corner and sees another officer lying in the middle of the street firing his gun. the 12 year veteran of the force is recovering tonight. glendale police confirming to 12news tonight that leslie merritt jr. , the man accused

he violated a domestic violence order of protection last night by being on a victim's property and making threats. you remember dps believe that he was responsible for multiple shootings on the i-10. but those charges were eventually dismissed. and, we are finally getting a look at the man who led police on an unusual police through ahwatukee overnight. josh atkins refuse to full over for officers but at one point during the pursuit, he did stop at the in officers eventually arrested atkins who was wanted for an outstanding want. first on 12news, water woes across the valley. people in phoenix and buckeye report their water bills are skyrocketing hundreds of dollars. a lot of you have been e- mailing us asking for answers because you feel hopeless and you have nowhere else to turn. >> we are working for you verifying what is really happening. team 12's kevin kennedy asking city officials some tough questions.

problem started to kind of bubble up if you will last week. dozens of people complaining but no one from the water district talking until tonight. the director not only answering questioning, but, showing us a print-out from one of the customers that complained. in the desert, water is liquid gold. and in buckeye, some people believe they are paying for 24- carat h20. jeff hancock is one of tuesday. >> somebody needs to step up to the plate. it is getting ridiculous. >> reporter: so today, we went looking for answers. >> a crew did go out there. >> reporter: dave is the water resources director. this is a print out of hancock's water usage. >> you are using it. on this day, you used 2500 gallons. >> reporter: every day for a month after that one day when the usage spiked it levels off. but why is unclear. >> if you have a leak that is

awful of an experience it can be. there are 48 million cases of food borne illness here in america each year. tonight, team 12 is digging into the local restaurant inspection files finding roaches, blood, and more unthinkable things. the dirty list and some of the worst offenders minutes away. now, to decision 2016. with just 11 days to go until election day. scary moment for republican vice presidential nominee the plane carrying pence skidded off the runway after it landed in heavy rain in new york's laguardia airport. members of his family were with him. his wife, oldest daughter, staffers, and members of the media. pence was headed to a fundraiser at trump tower but opted to talk to donors by phone. as for donald trump, he will make his 7th campaign stop in arizona. second in less than four weeks. this saturday afternoon in phoenix.

saturday afternoon at phoenix convention center in downtown. trump's need to travel here, ten days before the election, highlights one of the biggest problems that his campaign is having. that is that arizona right now is a tossup between trump and hillary clinton. >> meanwhile, donald trump jr. stumping for his father's presidential campaign on the asu campus today. but it is not what he said on stage that everybody is talking about tonight. it is actually what he did on his way events. there you see it. while driving through mesa, trump jr. stopped to help a stuck driver. now, this video was posted on facebook by the maricopa county republican party chairman. and it shows him and two other men pushing an impala out of the street. it has been shared over 8,000 times tonight. in their first joint appearance on the campaign trail, clinton and first lady michelle obama were campaigning side by side in the

carolina. the two women sought to fire up voters and talked about their mutual respect for each other. well, it is a story of heroism only on 12news. a dramatic water rescue in chandler three weeks ago. a man crashing his car into a lake while suffering a seizure. team 12 ease ryan cody has been all over this story from the very beginning. ryan, and, the story, not over just yet, huh? >> reporter: yeah, that's because e the three heros didn't have a chance to formally meet each other until today. it is a picture ... >> thanks. >> reporter: and a handshake nearly a month in the making. >> the night of the incident, everything was just going so fast. it was one of those things to be honest, i may have looked travis in the eye once. this was a great opportunity just to shake your hand. >> reporter: a reunion for three heros.

david parks. the trio pulling this man out of his car likely saving his life. the driver had a medical condition sending him crashing into the water near akatillo and alma school. >> we need the public to help us and help themselves. this guy is the personification of that. >> reporter: minutes before the meeting, the call to the final piece to the story. >> so i just got off the phone. >> it is all thanks to you. to get to have a cup of coffee together. it is a bond that i think all of us will have forever. >> reporter: just so ironic that tony, the victim, reached out to travis just minutes before he got to the police station this afternoon. the only thing left to do now is get all four of them together. and, the reason they haven't gotten together before is because tony, the victim, doesn't remember any of it. he just woke up in the hospital. had no idea that these people

maricopa county health department, some things stole our appetite. chicken blood dripping onto peeled oranging. raw pork stored over coleslaw. and who doesn't want warm cheese? >> uh, no thanks. >> reporter: these are real restaurant inspections in maricopa county. and those may not be the worst. they found severed goats heads hanging inside the walk-in cooler here at the oasis cafe in tempe. goats heads. freezer wrapped in plastic bags. which isn't even the violation. the cafe didn't have receipts for the goats and couldn't prove where they cam from. >> i have seen quite a few things over the years so i get surprised sometimes, but not as much as i used to obviously. >> reporter: for nearly two decades, tim hurst has inspected restaurants. >> we are a very visible agency here with what we do. and, i'm a customer in this

as well. and, you know, i would like to know how my facilities are doing. >> reporter: that's exactly the service he and his team are providing. maricopa county does not require restaurants to post their health inspection grades on the front window like many counties and states so it is up to you to know new china buffet had 13 of the county's most severe violations this year alone. employees using a water bucket to rinse hands in between breading raw chicken. and mice droppings in the kitchen. the zips on warner road and gilbert failed two inspections and was cited for nine priority violations defined by the county as things known to make people sick. violations like soiled pans. nine day old ground beef still being stored and soft, warm cheese. 17 restaurants in maricopa county have had their permits

i'm tom o'halleran, and i approve this messsage. paul babeu oversaw a place of horrors as headmaster of a school for at-risk youth. and were subject to sexual abuse. arizona deserves better. arizona's largest newspapers endorse tom o'halleran for congress. "the republic" says, "elect tom o'halleran. his words match his work." and "the daily star" said, "o'halleran puts the common good above party politics.
