trump jr., donald trump a second time and hillary clinton are all showing up in arizona the last month of the campaign. they wouldn't be here if the polls were phony. donald trump's holding a rally at 3:00 tomorrow afternoon at the phoenix convention center. the doors open there at 1:30. hillary clinton announced today she'll have an event in phoenix next wednesday no details on that one yet. live in the news room, brahm do you have something you want us to verify? e-mail us your concern at verify@1news.com. history being made in the city of phoenix today. the phoenix police department's new chief, jerry williams, was sworn in as the new leader oh the force. williams' hiring is historic. she will be the first female chief and the second african- american to hold the job. we're live in downtown phoenix where kevin kenly spoke to the

official. jerry williams is officially the police chief. she becomes the agency's first police chief, but williams is certainly no strange tore the city of phoenix or the phoenix police department. she spent # 2 years here with the department rising through the ranks. she was the assistant police chief in 2009 to 2011 before taking the top job in oxnard, california a huge crowd turned out today for the swearing in. the mayor was here, several councilmembers and she is from other agencies here in the valley. all on hand. chief williams called this a humbling day and then thanked dozens of people who helped her along the way. williams becomes the city's 45th police chief. shall e was sworn in this afternoon by her husband, cody, who is a justice court judge. williams' praised the department and its 4,000 employees saying it is an honor to be the department's chief. as for policing in this current environment, here is what she had to say. >> and oxnard, california, there was a great disconnect

mitigated that or balanced that was one community, one person, one contact, one organization at a time. >> reporter: williams has been shadowing the outgoing police chief for the last month. she plans to hit the ground working with city leaders and community members. she says one of her top priorities engaging with this community. kevin kennedy, 12 news. thank you, kevin. before the new chief was wo the phoenix convention center where the police chief's retirement ceremony took place today. the group carrying 17 caskets meant to represent the 17 people killed by phoenix police this year. the group says they hope to raise awareness about police violence. we have details on a beloved scottsdale teach here is slowly recovering from a horrible accident. last year maureen brown was hit by a car while crossing the street near 124th street to attend a trunk or treat event

community church. the driver took off leaving brown in serious condition. tonight her family and fiance spoke to us about her long road to recovery. >> she struggles daily. she is in a lot of pain. she is sick from the stress and the pain that she is in. every step that she takes is painful for her. >> maureen has had 14 surgeries since being hit. the police are still looking for the driver, but they just don't ha the investigators say the involved car was a black four- door sedan. brown's family hopes someone will come forward with more information. tensions continue to flare between the protestors and law enforcement on the standing rock reservation in north dakota. hundreds of native americans continue to fight the destruction of the dakota pipeline, a massive oil pipe that would cross four states. support for those trying to protect the land is spreading

support is coming from tribal youth across our state. we have the report. >> everybody we're out here in flagstaff, arizona. >> reporter: a few dozen runners marching to the beat of a drum say they're being called to stand with standing rock. >> we're going to be running to dakota. we were invited down here by our little brother riley. >> reporter: the 15-year-old riley ortega has gathered a group of runner whose will travel more than 1,400 foot. >> we wanted to do a run to show support. >> i think it is really horrible because the police are crossing barriers that have been established for many years and treaties and everything that's one of the main reason whys i wanted to do. this. >> reporter: the group embarked on their journey a day after the most recent violent clash between protestors and law enforcement where more than 100 were arrested. the officials claim protestors set fire to vehicles and threw

officers. but the others say the resistance movement has been non-violent. >> just seeing the environment of what is there where everyone is peacefully protesting and the officers, they have tanks, and they're wearing their riot gear. >> reporter: this 13-year-old of mesa is a member of the standing rock sioux tribe. she says the homes of her family members are close to the location of the stand-off and that the pipeline will have irreversible implications for generations to come. >> it is not a question of if when because when it will erupt my family and my people that i love will not have any water to drink and everybody needs water the live. >> reporter: 1 news. and really incredible to hear how many young people are stepping forward to speak out in this situation. you can visit our 12 news mobile app if you want to support the group of runners headed to standing rock. are you ready to honor

this is incredible with all of the lights. and you can see the crowd there down below. it is super cool. there's 82 chairs. it takes you, i'd say, about a quarter of a mile, if i had to impies, and it is about a 10- minute ride so it is really nice. the evenings are the best time to come out to the fair because if you're wondering if this above average nonsense continues, it sure is. we're going to take you through the forecast for tomorrow. basically fa get that out of your head. it is not fall yet. we're back in summer mode. temperatures more than 10 degrees above average and, in fact, they will be near record territory. so we're already talking 90 degrees by 1:00. and then maxing out at around 94. we're near record territory on sunday too. the overnight lows, also in record territory for those warm lows. and then for halloween we drop it down on the thermometer just a little bit. the overnight temperature also
