>> donald trump jr. helps a stranded motorist in mesa. but was this a publicity stunt? we investigate and verify. 12news at 10:00 starts now. >> we begin with an exclusive 12news investigation. heroin in the suburbs. >> if you don't think your children are vulnerable to encountering the drug, don't be so certain. new numbers released to 12news by the arizona department of help show the epidemic is worsening. >> with heroin related deaths last year alone, 238 people died from heroin related overdoses. prescription opioid deaths were down, but still a staggering 401. >> each represents many more addicts whose lives are spiraling out of control. >> the lucky ones are warning the others.

was alcohol. >> reporter: it was the early 90s and shane says like today, many parents were in denial or naive. >> alcohol gave way to marijuana in high school which in college became prescription drug abuse. that is when the flood gates opened. i found myself, somebody who was physically addicted to heroin, meth, and cocaine. >> reporter: heroin was his ultimate comfort. >> all the pain you have, all the fear, al melt away. but it's a lie. >> reporter: but 2011, shane had a mug shot and felony conviction to his name. >> all throughout the state of arizona. >> reporter: now, he works community outreach. >> when it comes to the suburbs, heroin is a substance a lot of people think as a drug somebody uses in a neighborhood that is not theirs. >> reporter: the map of speaking engagements shows where apartments are calling out for help. startling evidence. >> it is in the suburbing. it is something that is in our

it is in some middle schools. >> no one is really immune to this. >> reporter: dr. chris is an er physician. patients end up in his emergency room from pain pills and heroin. >> people of all walks of life. they are anywhere, people that don't have homes or, people that are ceos or, you know, successful business people. they can be moms. >> it is a fine line between being high and death. >> reporter: the typical heroin addict starts at 23. is more likely affluent suburbs and likely used painkillers prescribed by a doctor first. that last one puts dr. samadar in a bind. during pain emergencies, he must decide whether to prescribe opiate painkiller that's can be a gate way to addiction. >> we get patient satisfaction scores and one of the questions is how well did the doctor treat your pain. >> you have to make that decision i would imagine daily

how do you decide? >> it is patiently patient. >> reporter: junior high age or younger is the time kids should learn from parents an mentors. >> parents don't realize it can happen to them. it can happen to their family and their child. >> reporter: and in fact, that is what our colleagues in atlanta found. when they dug deeper into the scourge of heroin. >> my son davis was an amazing young man. >> congratulations to the senior class of 2011. >> he was junior class president, senior yearbook. and he got involved in heroin. >> this is my son zach. scored almost 2100 on his sates. an athlete. played musical instruments. there is nothing like this. there is nothing like losing your child. nothing that even touches it. it is ... you don't get better. >> and some of the last conversations ... that i had with taylor ...

that i could never give her. she asked me to please understand her. and i could never understand. i kept saying, you know, just stop. just stop. >> in the past two years, i have had eight friends die from overdoses. zach, kiana. we didn't use painkillerring before. toward the end of high school. and then, once the painkillers got too expensive, about six months later we started using heroin.

i really am. it's terrible to see your friends die. >> breaking the cycle has been extremely difficult. the level of dysfunction and the amount of using. it has taken over his life. >> i was 16 years old. i tried it for the first time. the opportunity was there. had i chosen to go to an ivy league school or something like that. i could i didn't sit around when i was a kid thinking i want to grow up and be a junkie. i have ruined my life because of it. you know. i guess it sounds cliche. like i lost the girl of my dreams because of it. i lost my kid because of it.

i feel like i could be a really successful person. i mean ... i grew up with a good family. there is no significant amount of clean time. before i consume again. it was definitely my escape. and now, it is kind of like a chore.
