violence from the extremist acts that mr. khan continued to revert to planning and attempting to carry out. >> reporter: fbi records showed khan repeatedly communicated with a man he believed to be a fighter with isis in syria. he tried several times to obtain weapons including pressure cooker bombs so he could attack buildings in maricopa county. khan's father tells the judge in this day and age of social media and video games, is simply misunderstood. a lost child who needs help. >> that's the mental capacity of an adult or the maturity. >> reporter: mahim's mother was inconsolable. >> i want you to know how much i have been suffering since the day he was taken from me. he's the only son i have. >> reporter: the defense attorney argues khan is no terrorist, but rather a teenager who was baited. >> instead what you see is a

encouraging him, and he continues to give him this and that and the other thing. >> reporter: a tangled web of lies as far as the prosecutor was concerned. >> he lies to them over and over again that i'm not interested in that, i'm not a terrorist, i'm not a jihadist. only that they tell him that nay know what he is doing when he says he's an isis spotter. >> reporter: in the end he was sentenced prison. attorney general mark burnovich allotted the prosecution and sentence handed down to khan. >> yeah, i did a great job investigating this case. our prosecutors and the attorney general did a great job prosecuting this case. the key is that lifetime probation. now once the individual gets out of prison we'll be able to monitor him and do ensure that he doesn't slip back into the jihadist lifestyle. >> reporter: now khan did not

khan must also give up his passport and cannot leave the united states nor possess any weapons once released from prison. live in the newsroom wendy halloran 12news. >> wendy, thank you. we are just four days away from the election. a big development tonight concerning your ballot on the appeals court blocking arizona's ban on collecting early ballots. team 12 political insider brahm resnik has the story. brahm? >> reporter: stacia, this case is a big deal for advocates of voting rights. they immedte the federal appeals court action. but the u.s. supreme court might reverse that decision. that could happen as soon as tomorrow. here is the background. republican governor doug ducey and the legislature made it a felony this year to collect another person's ballot for drop off. they claim ballot collecting invited voter fraud, though none has been found. voting rights group went to court saying that the law would suppress the right of minorities as well as rural residents. just a few minutes ago

for other victims. brown -- it is so shocking. >> the suspect todd colhep is a registered sex offender. according to records 12news obtained from court today. he has a criminal history here in the valley. he was arrested in tempe in 1986 for kidnapping and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. documents show when he was 15 years old he forced the victim at gunpoint to his house to have sex with him. thic they were afraid he might kill someone some day. a programming note tonight on dateline nbc. tom coleman's death initially looked like it was due to natural causes, but as police learn about an unconventional love triangle in his life, the investigation goes in a new direction. >> in the video itself we were able to observe a white suv arrive in the parking lot at planet fitness.

there's a great event this weekend that combines the arizona desert and legged friend. krystle henderson has the details. >> reporter: if you have a rough weekend, what better way than to come to the botanical center for dog day? tell me about this event. >> it is the only time during the year you can bring your dog into the garden. it's the usual price and then $4 per dog and that money goes to arizona humane society.

we'll have some water to refill, water dishes for dogs, we'll have a marketplace. we're calling it the bark it place. we'll have a dj, we're going to have a patio cafe with live musicians to enjoy lunch and hang out with your dog. we have other surprises, lots of activities and things. >> reporter: 800 people came out last year, so it is so much fun. >> 800 dogs, about 1,200 people. >> reporter: 800 dogs, humans 1,200. got it. and if you don't have a dog to take one home. because the humane society will be here. >> this is one of our favorite events of the year. we come out, the adoption vehicle will be out here. if you come without a pet, you can leave with one. it is so much fun to come out here and the proceeds go back to the arizona humane society. they've been a partnership with this program for four years.

down. it looks better even when you put on their graphic. look at last week, 100 degrees on thursday. now look at our thursday yesterday, 84 degrees, 79 today. you just can't beat it whatsoever out there. this is all in response to that low pressure center that is still bringing in active weather to the region, especially to live up in the northern portion of the state. and look at flagstaff right now. we're tracking a line of thunderstorms that will slowly be moving towards their west in flagstaff. you'll see some active weather here over the next hour or so. some small hail out there, rumbles of thunder as well. but for the most part this system is moving out. look at the rainfall totals. the hot spot coming in at .94 inches of rainfall. apache junction got .35 inches. look at scottsdale as well. but officially at phoenix sky harbor we came in at .35 inches. pretty nice. we are still well below
