off. i want to introduce you, though, to sharon. sharon, tell me a little bit where you're going for thanksgiving and traveling today. >> north las vegas, and we have family up there. they're stationed at the air base up there so we're just going to las vegas to spend the day and come home saturday. >> and enjoy some turkey. well, you are doing saturday because sunday is when everybody travels back. you were telling me you like traveling. does it ever bug you when it's really congested? >> no. you big traveling. sometimes it's work. >> it is work. well, thank you so much. again, as you take a look, there's maybe about 30, 40 people that we see that are getting their tickets, checking in their bags, and then heading upstairs, but you know, which is nothing compared to the some 49 million travelers that are going to take a trip of at least 50 miles over this holiday week. u.s.-based airlines are counting on this to be their busiest travel period ever with a record

83rd avenue. also around the durango curb. the east valley still pretty clear for the 60, the 101 and 202. let's go ahead and get you out here live to where you are. we have found an absolute parking lot. this is the 17th southbound at durango street. looks like vehicles are backed up for a couple of miles. now, some commuters this morning may be using the stretch of valley freeway to get to the airport so you may want to use another route because it is going to be backed up for a little whil the lanes here are blocked. we have just entered the 17 from the 10. again, going southbound near durango streechlt we can't really move at all. we are a parking lot at about 5 miles per hour at most. a lot of stop and go. now, as we continue to pan off to the left, you can see the 17 northbound lanes are moving along just fine. so coming up throughout the rest of the morning, we'll definitely keep you up day-to-day here about this crash, and if any others pop up on valley freeways.

zoo kicks off 25 years of zoo lights. team 12's brandon hamilton is live to show us what you can expect to see. hi, brandon. >> good morning to you. you will not find ebbenezer skrooj here. it's the 25th year for phoenix zoo lights. we've got the motion show starting up behind us so if it gets dark for a second, it's because the show is ramping up. we are joined by justin davis, the supervisor. good morning to >> how many people is on your crew to set these lights occupy. >> there's a crew of five of us. >> how long does it take to set all this up? >> we start in july, so six months, five months. >> another question, why not just leave all the lights on the trees so you don't have to take them down and redo it every year? >> because the trees grow, and we want to give them some relief. >> intregs chl i love how you describe it. when you take that sock off at the end of the day, your legs feel amazing. so you guys are always working

airport, you don't have any issues on the 60, the 202 and 143 are all nice and clear. and if you are driving this holiday season, well, gas prices really aren't too bad. some of the lowest we've seen in years. around the greater phoenix area, you're looking at spending about 2.09 a gallon or so, maybe even 2.189. that's going to be on the higher end. circle k on southern near 24th street, 2.01 a gallon. i know i, myself, my photographer, chris, here, is, took into consideration because he's cruising around with me every morning spending a pretty penny here to show you traffic live on valley freeways. >> luckily it's coming out of the station's budget. thanks so much. let's go live to scottsdale quarter. jimmy, i know matt wants that cute, adorable puppy from aawl. what do you want for christmas? >> i don't know.

be -- jen has our realtime on the road traffic. what's happening? >> there is a crash up on the i-10 eastbound near queen creek. crews working on cleaning that up. it is creating quite a jam for folks driving in this morning, not only to work, possibly also to the airport. a look here at your 12 today big picture traffic. other spots that are going to slow you down because of minor crashes that happened a while ago but are still slightly backed up, going to be the 17 southbound around the curve. a little slowdown on the 17 southbound around glendale and northern. then out to the east valley, the 60 westbound starting at about rural is in the yellow zone this morning. so, now, out here to where we are live, we're on the 143 panning off to the right with our exclusive bird's eye view showing you sky harbor airport where a lot of folks will take to the road today ahead of the holiday season, getting ready to spend some time with family.

as we take a gorgeous look at sky harbor airport this morning, a lot of people will be headed out to travel for the thanksgiving weekend. if that is you, travel safely. see you when you get back in town. meanwhile, now, if you've been out hike, you should testify nitly look up because there's a good chance you'll see a symbol of america, a bald eagle. in fact, the bald eagle population here in arizona is soorg, up 600% from just a few decades ago and recently headed out with three biologists from arizona game and fish to find out why. by a deadly sun yet full of illustrious life and an amazing adventure discovering it. >> just looking to see if we've got any adults around in the area. >> an bald eagle that is. he and his crew of biologists to keep up with the bird of prey that has not deserted this desert. >> so what's the importance of coming out here and trying to

>> well, the big part of monitoring these eagles, we are looking at the -- the breeding population. >> it wasn't too long ago when no matter where they hiked or how hard they looked, he and his team probably wouldn't see any bald eagles. at one point back in the 1970s, there were just 11 breeding pairs of bald eagles across arizona. now, there's 65 thanks to the work of game and fish and the southwestern bald eagle management committee that keeps an eye proteches their home so they can reproduce. >> you're able to tell how big is this population, how much young can they produce, and are they producing enough young to replace themselves as they grow old. >> this year, laid 93 eggs and many make their homes along the river and here on the salt river. >> this is one of the areas. this is one of the spots they

shallow water here. nice and clear today. >> we've actually climbed a few nests in here. we've gotten a firsthand look at exactly what they're eeth. we find a lot of cat fish, trout, as you'd expect. we also have found mud turtles, so they'll eat turtles and native turtles. >> basically, the water is the eagles key to life and the reason they nest and breed here and are flying high in the middle of a desert. >> adult bald eagl across over here. we can't see it from this angle. >> the eagles often avoid the sun as much as people do. that's why it can take a little work and a lot of hiking to see them, especially now in the months before they begin to breed. >> see the dark spot in the tree on the left. >> it's hard to see right now with the leaves in the tree, but that's where the second pair in this area is nesting. >> what do you think the bald eagle population would be like if it wasn't for the programs that you-all have here? >> so i think we may still see

landscape out there. a lot more eagles on the -- on the landscape, a lot more young being produced every year. >> it's a landscape that may look a bit barren, but it's full of life and helping bald eagles soar. >> so beautiful and majestic. so when you were out there, obviously it was so hard to see that one eagle. how did they know it was even out there? >> these guys, the biologists from game and fish, they know this area like the back of their hand. this is the area the eagles ha their food so they know there are a couple different trees in the area, and they know to go there to look. >> you're going to go out again later on, right? >> right. so they'll breed in the next month or two, then some time early spring, say, march, they'll go out and band the bald eagles that way they can track the young and they'll know in another five years those bald eagles can breed, they'll be staying here in arizona. >> you're excited about that.

i-10 eastbound now cleared. so let's talk holiday travel. this is the busiest travel day of the year. thanksgiving is tomorrow. everyone is really xietd about heading out to spend time with family and friends and, of course, eat a lot of good food. we got out of the car. here we are at the phoenix sky train, sky harbor airport. this is one of the spots where you can bypass a lot of traffic, and you can park here. this is good for passenger dropoffs and pickups. it's just south of 44th street and washington. the free train shuttles take the east economy parking and terminals 3 and 4, plus there's also a walkway between terminal 3 station and terminal 2. free parking is available in the cell phone lot on the south side of the station so that will definitely help give you extra time this morning because even though the airport is a little bit quieter right now, here in the next hour or two, a lot of folks are going to start boarding planes and jetting off to wherever they're headed for the holiday season.
