the criminal charges are right or wrong, the conduct is beneath the office of president of the united states. ♪ christian: tonight and for the fourth time in five months, donald trump will be arrested. in the next hour, he will be leaving his golf club in new jersey for the jail house in fulton county, georgia. we will bring pictures in the second half of the program. also tonight, prigozin is presumed dead. the president of the spanish fas under investigation over a series of inappropriate celebrations of women's world cup.
5:03 pm
we will have plenty on donald trump's appearance in georgia. while we wait, we will start with events in russia where the adership of the mercenary group has been decapitated. all 10 bodies have been recovered from the crash site which stretches over a mile. has not been formally identified. one is the body of prigozhin. the speculation is it is highly likely the intelligence service orchestrated the plane crash, mainly -- maybe on the direction of vladimir putin. but if it was, you would get no sense from the statement he put out. vladimir putin said, "he was a talented businessman that i have known since the 1990's." he promised to look at what the investigators put out. there are reports of security

has been increased in the city that was briefly seized by the water group during the butte -- the wagner group during the meeting in june. reporter: 60 miles from moscow, the wreckage of a claim, a private jet in which russian authorities say prigozhin was traveling. an investigation is underway into the cause. was it a bomb, a missile or sabotage? authorities say all 10 people on board were killed. but it is mr. yevgeny prigozhin 's fate that his center of attention. for years, the crimmins mr. fix-it. but 10 months ago, they need to need. they took over the city of moscow. it was an unprecedented challenge to the kremlin.
5:05 pm
so, is yevgeny prigozhin's demise in the plane crash president putin's revenge? today, the kremlin leader broke his silence on the crash. he said he had known him for a long time, since the early 1990's. he called him a man who had made mistakes but was talented. but president putin has previously called the wagner mutiny a stab in the back and betrayal he could not abide. if this was an act of avenge, -- of revenge, what is the message? >> this was a message that you must be loyal. it is a message to ordinary people that you can survive but you must be quiet. there is no need to support someone else. only president putin is your president, or person to admire.
5:06 pm
reporter: in other words, do not cross the kremlin. the world of russian politics is a murky one. some suggest a hoax. there is talk of a second wagner plane that landed safely. outside the airport in st. petersburg, there is a shrine. people here are in morning. -- mourning. christian: i am pleased to say that -- is here with me in the studio. i want to talabout your statement. it seemed abstract and void of the enormity of what had gone on. what did you make? >> about president putin's statement? condolences and complements. he called yevgeny prigozhin a talented man and businessman. someone who would try to achieve
5:07 pm
things for himself and the common cause. but that does not change the fact that many people, if not most people in russia and abroad, will conclude or have concluded that the russian authorities were behind what happened to the plane. why is that? we know what vladimir putin has set for years now about treachery. he said treachery is the one thing he cannot forgive and made it clear two months ago that he viewed the perpetrators of the mutiny as traders. and he said they would be punished. the fact they were not punished immediately has nothing to do with this. the plane crash happened two months exactly since the start of the mutiny. therefore people will suspect he was involved. christian: why do you waited two
5:08 pm
months if he was involved? >> he is not the kind of person that asked immediately. he waits and bites his time. it is the same time that -- viruses officials. he waits. i am not saying the russian authorities did this. we have no proof and no evidence. but you know. to the extent, whatever was behind this, i think the kremlin will be quite pleased that people are talking about president putin as the man who may be getting revenge. it says a very strong message to anyone else in russia who may be planning some kind of armed insurrection or a coup. it sends a message to wagner loyalists, "do not cross the kremlin."
5:09 pm
do not even think of raising arms because it will end badly. christian: there is speculation about why this plane came down. have a listen. >> our initial assessment is it is likely yevgeny prigozhin was killed. we are continuing to assess the situation. we do not have any information to indicate right now -- the press reporting is stating there was some type of missile that took down the plane. we assess that to be inaccurate. no information to see just there was a surface-to-air missile. beyond that, i will not have any further information. christian: i since that will further aid conspiracy theories. perhaps that does not matter. all that matters is whether yevgeny prigozhin is alive or dead. >> i think you are right.
5:10 pm
was this a bomb or missile? at the end of the day, if yevgeny prigozhin is dead, that is the end of the story. does vladimir putin emerge stronger from this? ice is -- i suspect he will emerge stronger because two months ago, there were people talking about vladimir putin looking weaker with the fact yevgeny igozhin was able to negotiate this mutiny in which yevgeny prigozhin was not charged. that made the kremlin look weak. two months ago, we hear about the reported demise of yevgeny prigozhin. this potentially makes him stronger. christian: i have to let you receive your holiday but it is lovely to see you in person. as to speak to the russian
5:11 pm
correspondent for the financial times. nice to see you. in a you have been following the story. can you tell me a little about the investigation and location of the bodies and what is being done in moscow to get to the bottom of this echo -- of this? >> we know the plane crashed northwest of a region in a settlement near a local village. there were a lot of eyewitnesses and a lot of footage. we know the russian investigative committee has said it is launching a criminal case to investigate the causes of the incident. russia's aviation agency said they are looking for the black box and also looking into the causes of the incident. right now, we know parts of the plane are scattered in a small area apart from the tail end of the plane that is 3.5 kilometers away. everyone is still piecing together what happened.
5:12 pm
of course, the primary theory being discussed are potentially a bomb on the plane. or something on the undercarriage of the plane. others have spoken to by surface-to-air missile so there are different theories. christian: you probably heard steve saying that what matters at the end of the day is the fate of yevgeny prigozhin. do you think russian authorities will produce a body to put an end to the theory he is still alive? if you're going to put a stake through the heart of your enemy, the best way would be to show he is well and truly dead. >> i think, in their eyes, the theatricality of the incident we saw and fact this was not a poisoning or an assassination in the dead of night but in broad daylight -- a plane being taken down out of the sky with the entire leadership of wagner on
5:13 pm
board, it is difficult for them to send a stronger message than that. christian: there are plenty of people who believe this further strengthens vladimir putin's position after a wobbly couple of months. i am sure you have seen online the presumed pictures of vladimir putin driving to the kremlin last night. reports of a return to moscow. these reports there is tiny security in rostock. do you think we are at the end of this process or do you think it is a process of further bloodletting as others of wagner try to get revenge? >> i think the scent a powerful message and send a signal and struck fear into the hearts of peop who may have tried to side with yevgeny prigozhin after the mutiny. i think there is a large

response from those who still supported prigozhin in the past two months. it is much more likely to create a sense of perhaps jaded disillusionment among those people who still saw prigozhin as speaking truth to power, criticizing the leadership of the russian army for their failures. another march on moscow and another wave of anger. more bloodletting and opposition . it is unlikely considering the strength of the message vladimir putin just sent. christian: thank you very much. while this was unfding, a court in moscow quietly extended the detention of the wall street journal reporter evan gershkovich who was arrested on charges at the end of march which are painfully false. during a hearing, the court ordered he should remain in jail until november 30. although not entirely

surprising, it is depressing for his friends and family. his pretrial detention was expected to be over next week. he is facing a sentence of up to 20ears if he is found guilty. we can speak to paul beckett, the washington bureau chief. at wall street journal. not great news today. what has been the reaction from evan's team and those he is speaking to. paul: it is a tough decision and a reminder he has been there for five months already now it is another three months. based on the current track record, weeks act it to be longer than that. that gives to the trial of painfully false charges but we assume that he will therore be convicted dead. it is part of a too long wait and we are just bracing for more.
5:16 pm
it is tough for evan who will pass his 32nd birthday in that prison in two weeks time which is a reminder this has gone on too long. christian: the hearing today was close to the public. has anyone had access to evan? do we know how they are treating him? paul: we have lawyers who see him on a fairly regular basis. the american investor trace -- the american ambassador tracy has seen him every few weeks. he reports back are somewhat artening under the circumstances. he seems to be in decent shape and seems to be helping. he is getting some letters in and out. all under the circumstances, because he is in a notoriously awful security service prison in moscow. christian: as he suggested,
5:17 pm
there is a pattern to this that we have seen times before. it has been widely speculated that the russians are looking for an exchange. cupisaid last month he is seriously considering 8 -- president biden said last month he is seriously considering a prisoner exchange. do you know anything about that? paul: when this has come up before, we see little signs of hope and there are usually pretty quickly dashed. last time we saw it, the russians said they were actively engaged and a couple days later, national security advisor jake sullivan said we are talking but we do not see any clear path to breakthrough that would result this -- would resolve this. we would love to see more action. christian: we will continue to keep covering this we will send our best wishes to

him and his friends and family. in this moment, there is another american still in prison and has been five years. paul whelan isuffering the same fate. we have to prepare for the possibility this will drag on. paul: i really appreciate the support. thank you very much. christian: you are watching bb news around the world and here in u.k. that's take a quick look at other stories making headlines -- let's take a quick look at other stories making headlines. people seeking asylum to see if they can stay in the u.k. has reached high levels. the government says they are convinced -- they are working to reduce the levels. the king and queen of france -- the king and queen were due to

a year ago. their chips are specialized, fine-tuned to accelerate calculations that drive chatgpt and other generative ai applications. in case you need further concerns we are at the beginning of something big. if you were to go back to the 1990's when every company realized they needed to go back to the internet, the one company building the routers needed connect was the cisco. it is good to see you since dano. i suppose the obvious question is, have we missed the boat? >> obviously, that would not that -- that would be if you did not invest in nvidia shares before they catapulted ohio. along the likes of microphone -- of microsoft, apple and more. we do not know how this will

play out. all eyes on nvidia. huge enthusiasm abouthis. it is the first move in this space and has a dominant position because it is chips that are used so widely in ai applications. but they are rivals and they are not as big right now. it shows just how rapid the growth price in -- the price growth in nvidia shares has been. at the moment, what is happening is companies are not wanting to miss the boat so they are channg available budget and putting as much as they can into potential ai capability. they don't want to be left behind. once we have more of a full understanding about how these new systems can be integrated within companies, you could see the man start to moderate.

christian: we all remember clearly what happens through the supply crunch that was ongoing through the pandemic. suddenly, we are all aware of chips because they are in our cars and everything we. is the industry changing as a result? is nvidia video benefiting from it? susanna: it is certainly benefiting from that but has really benefited from this ai frenzy. look at its 800 chip. it has far outdone supply and is currently selling for double is supply -- its price. it is accounting for the huge search we have seen -- huge surge we have seen. there are simply challenges -- are supplied hundreds down the road already. in terms of the supply of metal

cases for parts of these chips. as part of why there is a surge in the share price of other companies like samsung because it has actually been able to get in bed with nvidia potentially to try to help solve some supply-chain challenges. you can see how it has really started this ripple effect of the ai frenzy that is helping other companies as well. but some of the most important challenges is taiwan's semiconductor manufacturing share price fell back today and nvidia has lost some games it had earlier. christian: you convinced me. thank you very much. good to talk to you. footballs wrote governing body has opened disciplinary proceedings against the president of the spanish the faa this morning. this is the moment after the final whistle just before lewis

you would no longer be eligible to run for president again but things were looking bleak for him anyway. it was not handled in the appropriate manner and he could have been facing up to a 15 year ban, but thankfully football stars and spain's own prime minister saying this was not right and an apology wasn't enough. what i was hearing is up until very recently, he was refusing to resign and leave his post. thankfully, things are moving in the right direction at the very least. he has a huge responsibility and has marred the biggest day in hermoso's career in the spanish national team. christian:he apology was interesting because he seemed to
