support, and in terms of military assistance the first shipment of equipment has arrived. that would be interceptor missiles to replenish israel's iron dome defense system and munitions. that comes from u.s. military systems of around $4 billion a year. they get that every year. this equipment was already in the pipeline and has been fast-track or comes from u.s. stockpiles. mr. blinken said israeli's would probably need more. they signaled they would have a forceful and lengthy campaign which would need firepower. this can blinken said the administration would have to get authorization from congress for more funding and it was prepared to do that. >> we mention 22 americans were killed and some being held hostage. did the secretary say anything about securing the release? >> he did not give details and it's really unclear about how things will proceed.

corridor out of gaza, what more is to be said about that? >> state department official said it was an active discussion. safe passage corridor would be forgetting humanitarian aid into the gaza strip and getting civilians out. mr. blinken said it was complicated. he didn't explain why b that could be a case of hundreds of thousands of gazans going in egypt, which would create its own challenges. that is still being discussed, there is no resolution to that. u.s. officials say civilian should be protected, they say -- sorry, that israel should obey the laws of war and avoid civilian casualties, but they are clearly expecting a very forceful campaign and supporting it given the brutality and scale of the hamas attack. >> very could speak with you, thank you.

modern arab studies at columbia university. professor, thank you for joining us on bbc news. as a historian you have said we are witnessing a new era in the conflict between the israelis and palestinians. i want to ask about the situation on the ground. we see the israeli military say hundreds of thousands of troops are gathering near gaza. they are ready to execute a mission we have been given. that could mean a ground incursion. what do you think we are going to see? >> what we are already seeing is the palestinian casualty toll is rising above the very high israeli casualty toll. israel has mentioned 1200 people killed in the gaza death toll just about rose to that level today. so we will seek top -- carpet bombing of gaza and there's a destruction of neighborhoods and attacks on all kinds of facilities and installations. most of which have nothing to do with hamas. will we see a ground attack?
5:45 pm
>> the israeli government has said we want to root out hamas. we want to end hamas as it is. is that possible to do? >> politically, no. even militarily i question the extent to which israel will be able to degrade hamas capabilities. the important thing is, they will kill hundreds and hundreds and maybe thousands of innocent civilians in doing whatever it is they claim they are doing. they may not degrade hamas military capability, but as in is really former director military intelligence said this morning on national public radio, hamas has broader reach than just its military. it's political, religious and cultural -- cultural. they could not uproot that without killing a large portion of the 2.4 million people on the gaza strip. >> what would you say is how israel should respond? >> we are talking about a
5:46 pm
56-year-old occupation. if it's not time to end it, i don't know when it would be. we are talking about a 17 year blockade of gaza long before rockets were fired. if it's not time to end the seven year blockade, i don't know when it will be. this is the situation that has lasted for 75 years. the people of gaza are the original indigenous population of southern israel, which now have communities, some of which were these battles. in some cases, horrible massacres over the past few days. that's a deeper level. if you don't dress that level of problem and the problem of no palestinian state or self-determination or occupation of 56 years, you are not addressing it. israel refuses to address any of those issues. >> senator bernie sanders a statement saying this is a major set back for peace and justice for palestinians. want to read you a quote from the statement.
5:47 pm
he said for years people of goodwill throughout the world including brave israelis have struggled against the blockade of gaza, the daily west bank current is conditions faced by many palestinians. he says hamas terrorism will make it much more difficult to address that tragic reality and will embolden extremists on both sides continuing the cycle of violence. what your thought on that statement? >> that may or may not be true. i think it may be true. i think some of the terrible civilian casualties are going to be a terrible burden for advocates for palestine to bear. but i would retort to the senator, i believe him when he says that he and many people of goodwill have done their best to end occupation and to end the siege. their best was not enough. united states government is the sponsor of the occupation. united states government finances the weapons that are killing them.
5:48 pm
it is our responsibility of americans, i know the senator has tried and many others have tried, to stop american support for human rights violations. to stop support for continued occupation, but we have not done enough. whatever has been done until now is insufficient. 56 years of occupation rolls on unhindered. 16 years of blockade rolls on unhindered. he's right, this may be a hindrance, but he and others have been insufficient to change the course of american policies fully behind these problems, which are the root of what we are facing. >> professor, thank you for sharing your insights with us today. >> you are very welcome. >> violence has expanded to lebanon. israel has reinforced its northe unofficial border area with thousands of extra units and militant targets. lebanese media says three people were hurt when schelling hit
