in southern gaza, homeless and the hungry who fled the north and hundreds of thousands of tried to survive. we have nothing that we need to live, since this man who fled south. we are living in a dump. if we move, we will die. with too few toilets, many are fearful about the spread of disease. there is food but not enough. all this will feed less than 2000 people, says amia, just a fraction of those in need. there are long lines to get bread but it is being rationed. we have been waiting here since 6:00 in the morning, he tells us. just to get food to feed the kids. we will run out of flour come the maker says, in two days

situation on the ground as you are aware of it? >> terrible catastrophe. the big concern, especially for those who work with pregnant women, is opening the humanitarian access corridors and ensuring that people who may be in hospital are protected, safe and that they do not have to move. >> what is a situation like for pregnant women in gaza? >> working in gaza, we know that there are over 50,000 were pregnant. about 5500 of them are expected to deliver in the next days to a month. about 160 deliveries a day. at this point, uncertainty around where to deliver is what women are reporting. we have had some gripping understandings about the rate

against death when you are asked to move in heavily pregnant. you are not sure if irving will be a complication. for women who are already hospitalized and whose newborns may need an incubator, it is a minute to minute guess as to whether the fuel holds out, the energy that allows the incubator to be available will be there. a c-section at this hour how dire the circumstances are. >> also the situation regarding the lack of clean water, how will that be impacting women and children? >> this is why the u.n. secretary general has been so clear about rescinding this movement and evacuation order. the point being that for health and hygiene, food, water, the

ability to have a reliable supply of medication, nothing is as precarious as a woman carrying her child, walking and in fear, not understanding what will happen to her next. one of the important provisions of international humanitarian law is that health facilities be spared. for us, our midwives are trying their best, even using hotlines to communicate with moms, trying to give guidance by remote. when you reach the hospital or health facility, that has to be a safe haven. unfortunately, some 10 days out, supplies in these hospitals are exhausted. humanitarian arms including the red cross have kits at the ready at the border with egypt.

we hope that the good offices of all concerned will result in an opening of that corridor so that supplies can come in. add people who are trapped in the north. women with disabilities, women who have had a highbred pressure -- high blood pressure complications, they need medication by drip. they will not be able to move. we insist that health facilities you protected. >> is it surprising that it has taken so long and still no humanitarian aid or darkness from established? -- no humanitarian aid cord or been established? >> what i hope is that the dialogue process, the peace process, which is the fervent wish of everyone caught in this

situation right now, be respected. i am surprised, as a physician and as the leader of a reproductive health group, the unfpa, we know that pregnancy is a sacred time for the mother and the unborn child. i really do expect that all options will be taken to protect people for minute by minute trying to breathe, trying to get precrisis. i will also say -- get through a crisis. i will also say that from the perspective of movement of people, there are times and circumstances where the sacrosanct quality of a woman in labor must be respected. this is one of those times. >> thank you for joining us.
