have appeared in a video released by mas which is designated a terror organization by the u.k., the u.s., and many other western governments. the women said they were hostages and demanded to be released immediately. the bbc does not normally broadcast hostage videos but this is a still taken from the video. from left to right you can see them. we don't know the conditions under which it was filmed but the women appear to be in reasonable health with no obvious signs of injury. the video is described as distressing. prime minister benjamin netanyahu said it was cruel psychological propaganda. our international editor reports from southern israel. reporter: there is good news for one family at least. this woman was rescued by the israeli army last night. she had been held in gaza since the seventh of october. for the rest of the hostage families, the agony of waiting

goes on. in the center of tel aviv, the families of the hostages have set up a vigil opposite the ministry of defense. these are the faces of many of those who are missing. there is a table set for a jewish sabbath dinner. empty places for those held in gaza. more anger at the actions of hamas, which is powering israel's response. never again. you cannot butcher jews mano a mano joyfully, sending messages, i killed 10 israelis. reporter: after the video was released by hamas, the israeli said it was hugging the families of the hostages. put some of those families blame

her family recognized her in a video of gun men celebrating her capture and they had hoped that she was a hostage. life is on hold here in the israeli towns close to gaza. most people have moved somewhere safer with no end in sight to this war. hamas took hostages in the first place to gain leverage over israel. when the israelis launched the ground operation, they said they would not grant hamas any kind of impunity for what they've done. but now by making this video, hamas has hit back with a calculated act of psychological warfare, directed at the prime minister. the israeli military has released a video of its tanks advancing into gaza. somewhere out there are the rest of the hostages. israel has declared a clear objective to wipe hamas off the

face of the earth. assuming its tanks and troops can do that, israel has not spelled out what comesext. israel continues to inflict pain and death on. palestinian civilians throughout all the wars in gaza, israel's assertions that it targets hamas and not civilians has been dismissed by palestinians as lies. this war is no different. in the grounds of the hospital in gaza silly, another palestinian couple mourn their dead children. israel claims there is a hamas bunker under the hospital. this looks as if it will be a long war, with cruelty hea[e -- with cruelty heaped on cruelty. >> there are discussions from

many governments around the world about what the international response will be. we will take you live to new york where the united nations security council's meeting. it is an emergency meeting to discuss the humanitarian crisis in gaza. we will keep an eye on that. i want to bring in our north american correspondent, standing by following events for us. this is a significant meeting. what do we expect it to achieve? we have seen the last couple of weeks a lot of talk but very little real action as far as the u.n. is concerned. >> that's right. this will be the first time the un security council's meeting. but this is after four failed attempts to reach a resolution -- to reach consensus on a statement to the world about where the security council stands. while we have seen the u.n. general assembly very overwhelmingly call for humanitarian truce, the security council has yet to come out with

a similar statement. this is an emergency meeting that was requested by the uae. it came after the general assembly vote, after israel intensified its ground operation into gaza. the uae said it wanted to make sure that civilians were protected and not targeted in anythen really what we are going to have -- any ground operation. then what we are really going to have is metings by unra, they will hear about the latest concerns about not only the bombardment and the death toll by israel but certainly about the aid operations. they say enough aid is simply not getting in. it's meager and inconsistent. they want to see at least 100 trucks a day. there's also concern about the hospitals being hit in the vicinity by bombardment.

and the concern about evacuation orders there. the u.n. saying it is impossible to evacuate people who are -- patients who are unable to to be moved. these are the types of information and warning that they u.n. has been puttingut. that councilmembers will certainly hear again in this meeting. >> the u.s. -- the un security council, stay with us, we will have a listen to what they are saying. >> ahough this resolution received widespread support, we regret the council was not unanimous in renewing this mandate, as unity greatly enhances u.n. efforts to achieve peace. collects, the united states strongly supports persal on both -- the personal on fully and his efforts to advance the political process. in adopting this resolution, members of the council underscore the urgent need f a

is at the center of discussion going on right now at the u.n. in new york. it is an emergency meeting called by the uae to discuss the worsening humanitarian situation and requesting more aid to be allowed into the territory. we know in number of trucks, peer-reviewed trucks have made it across the crossing between egypt and gaza. even in normal times, hundreds of trucks would take aid into gaza. but we know just a few have been allowed. there are increasing calls for -- for more food, medicine and water to be allowed in, including fuel to be taken into the territory. they said that hamas has access to the fuel and it would help their fight against israel. lots of diplomacy going on. so far very little by way of real results. israel's ambassador to the u.n.,
