42-year-old shamsud din jabbar. experts say and i.s. flag was found on the vehicle. >> we are aggressively running down every lead. annita: the fbi has confirmed that officers shot and killed the suspect. he was a u.s. military veteran. the local sugar bowl college football game has been postponed following the attack. ♪ hello. i'm annita mcveigh. we will have more from new orleans in just a moment, but first, one person has died and seven others have been injured after a tesla cybertruck exploded outside a hotel owned by donald trump. the person who died was inside the vehicle, which was outside the hotel at the entrance to it. clark county fire department officials and las vegas

metropolitan police have been issuing some more details about what happened. you can see these dramatic pictures of the scene. the cause of the fire is still unclear. in a post on the social media platform x, the ceo of tesla motors elon musk has said the whole senior team is investigating the matter. mr. musk says he has no idea what has happened, and the president elect, the son of president-elect trump, erica trump, describing it an electrical vehicle fire. now to new orleans and the man suspected of carrying out an attack on new year's revelers in the city did not carry out the attack alone, the fbi has said. a flag calling itself the islamic state was found in the pickup truck that the suspect drove into a crowd of people pick the fbi has confirmed the suspect was 42-year-old u.s.

military veteran shamsud din jabbar. he was shot dead at the scene after exchanging fire with police officers. 10 people were killed after the truck hit crowds in the city. at least 35 others were injured. local police say the driver tried to run over as many people as possible. two officers were wounded and are being treated in hospital. in these images shared by earth cam, you can see a group of police officers running toward the scene, around 3:00 a.m. local time. in this picture, verified by bbc verify, shows law enforcement heavily armed surrounding a white pickup truck in the aftermath of the incident. the fbi has taken the lead in this investigation and confirmed that they are looking into this as an act of terrorism. we also heard from our u.s. partner cvs that fbi agents are working to identify individuals in a video which shows several

people dragging explosive devices into place. this incident took place in the famous central french quarter of new orleans, a notable and busy nightlife spot, and the early hours of new year's day local time. this is the scene in the last few hours. it is midafternoon there now, and large parts of the french quarter remain cordoned off as the investigation continues. earlier we heard more from the fbi about the suspect. >> the suspect has been identified as 42-year-old shamsud din jabbar, a u.s. born citizen from texas. he was driving a ford pickup truck, which appears to be rented, and we are working to confirm how the suspect came in possession of the vehicle. an isis flag was located on the trailer hitch of the vehicle, and the fbi is working to determine the subject's potential association and affiliation with the terrorist

organization. we are working with the department to investigate this as an act of terrorism. we are aggressively running down all of the leads to identify the possible subject associates. we are working to ensure there is no further threat. we do not believe that jabbar was solely responsible. we are running down every lead. annita: at that news conference, the mayor of new orleans, latoya cantrell, gave this update about what is happening in the city. mayor cantrell: my priority will continue to be to ensure that victims that remain on bourbon street now will be serviced and removed as soon as possible. but as stated, the fbi is in charge of this investigation and are doing everything necessary to make this happen. i've gone to the hospital along with chief kirkpatrick to visit our police officers, and considering their injuries, they are doing well.

as i mentioned, this investigation is ongoing, and the fbi remains the lead in the investigation. it is an active crime scene as well. we are committed to uncovering all details surrounding this tragedy. annita: the governor of louisiana, jeff landry, gave more details about additional security in the city and preparations for the big college football game, as these sugar bowl, which has been postponed for 20 four hours following the attack. gov. landry: the preparations for the sugar bowl are intended to issue an emergency declaration tomorrow, so that we can bring all of our federal, state, and local agencies to bear in preparation for the super bowl and mardi gras. but because of the events today,

i have amended that emergency declaration and issued it today. so, again, that declaration will allow our federal, state, and local partners to bring all of the resources necessary to get this city safe. in light of that executive order, i've also ordered the mobilization of the military police company. i have asked general friedman to assist both the new orleans police and the fbi. annita: we heard more about the political reaction from the white house with our north america correspondent rowan bridge. rowan: he has offered the support needed to the

authorities in louisiana. there are some key things that came out of the news conference that bear repeating. it is clear that the authorities now do not think this was a single person behind this attack. they are trying to track down all of the known associates of shamsud din jabbar, and anyone who has had contact with him in the last 72 hours. there are still victims of this attack on the street, and bourbon street, the french quarter, in new orleans, which means it is certainly possible that the death toll of 10 confirmed so far may go up. some are still in hospital are still in a critical itsos well'k about whether there were security measures in place in new orleans, in case of such a terrorist attack. the police are keen to point out that they did have measures in place, there were patrol cars, but this was a determined attack. he drove up onto the pavement to

get around the barriers in order to drive into people. finally, as you said, i think people need to understand that the sugar bowl, this american football game between two university sides, is a massive game for new orleans as well as the united states. american football, university football, is a massive sport in this country, so for that event to be postponed, that is a significant event to be postponed in that way. but the nfl has said it will take place, it will be 24 hours later. annita: and certainly tells us about the concerns that the fbi, the lead agency investigating this, and other agencies, about what has happened in new orleans, rowan. president-elect trump was talking in his statement, he called this an act of pure evil, and he said that criminals coming in are far worse than criminals who have come into our country, but since he made that statement, we have learned the suspect is a u.s.-born, texas resident and army veteran.

rowan: yeah. that is right. those details were confirmed by the fbi in that news conference this afternoon. what is not clear is exactly what the motive is behind this. the fbi said it is a terrorist incident, and if you've seen some of the pictures, you've seen what the fbi now believes is an i.s. flag on the bumper of that car, and they are working to find out if he has any other links or otherwise within a terrorist organizations. this was an attack carried out by a u.s. citizen on u.s. territory. annita: our anna adams has been following this and told us more about the french quarter in the city. anna: more and more coming down from different areas in the state. we have the state troopers joining, officers from different parishes coming to assist,

because not only is this a huge you fast-moving investigation, but it is also an incredible number of tourists here. it is one of the busiest weekends certainly i've ever seen since mardi gras. the streets are still, you know, very busy. we have seen a car in our the french quarter behind me. -- coroner van leave the french quarter behind me. this is the intersection of canal street and bourbon street. we have seen the coroner van on site since the accident happened, at 3:00 a.m. they have only recently been able to move the final body from the scene. it is an active crime scene. i think what has happened as they were focusing their efforts on securing the rest of the city . those bodies have now since been moved. the coroners are no longer here.

as you say, we are now seeing the investigation moved to other parts of the city. the st. roch neighborhood is only a mile from here, and one of the houses, it is believed to be in airbnb, there are officers there now with bomb squads and dogs that have gone in. we'd been up there earlier, but there is nothing at the moment to be reporting from there, but they are investigating that the suspect could have had with the house there. annita: anna, you have been describing the location. many people, even if they have not been to new orleans, know that this area is famous, known for its music, of course, jazz especially, and so many people in the city as well for this big college football game, which is a huge event in the usa. but what is the mood they are now? people would have been coming for a weekend, a week of celebration, and, you know, all their palans, potentially, thron

into chaos with this horrific news. anna: exactly. bourbon street is the most famous street in the city. it is known worldwide. yesterday, there were parades outside, marching bands outside. obviously the fireworks. all of that was concentrated within three or four blocks of where this happened, just to give you a sense of how many people must have been out could also as a people go to the french quarter. i was there earlier in the night on bourbon street myself, listening to music. it really is the center of not just tourists but of life here. this is where things happen in the french quarter. the police presence would have been relatively strong last night, and also this was one of the main areas in the city that has a lot of security cameras, so the police are now trolling through all of the cameras that have been exposed to that street. it is probably the most heavily surveilled street in the whole

city. and today we are seeing more and more tourists come out because, i mean, they need to eat, they need to get out of their hotel rooms. so we have seen more and more tourists coming to canal street, looking slightly bewildered. and this is their weird juxtaposition, that this happened last night, and we are already seeing the restaurants filling up, and we are seeing musicians coming out and playing jazz, so there is a very strange atmosphere, that yes, the show has to go on, but also very somber and just an absolute surprise, because nobody expects -- this is not a particularly safe city, it has to be set, but nobody ever expects something to happen that would have anything to do with terrorism's. there are shootings, there was a shooting two weeks ago right here actually come and that is what people are frightened about here, but certainly nobody would have expected a terrorism attack in new orleans, so it is really

shocked today and surprise. annita: as you saw, a news conference a little while ago, the governor for n louisiana ensuring that all resources necessary to get this city safe him as he put it, would be made available. at that news conference, there was quite a lot of discussion about the bollards in the area, bollards which the suspect drove around. what more can you tell us about that? a lot of reporters were very interested to ask questions about that. anna: absolutely. that is the question. i spoke to some people who own restaurants, the business community here, and that is what they want to know. why were the bollards not preventing this? there were two sets of bollards. one was up last night, but it was not in this area, it was further up on bourbon street. so somehow, someone had been able to circumvent the bollards, and that is the question is certainly everyone wants to find out the answer to come and i think that, you know, that is what we are going to have to

hunter, and a 27-year-old tiger bech among those who died. we are learning a university of georgia student was critically injured, and two israeli citizens among those injured in the attack. so do keep up-to-date with every development on the live page as well. in other news, an armed man has killed 10 people, including two children, and montenegro. the attack happened in the western city. a statement said the man opened fire at a bar and fled the scene. police identify him only by his initials, a.m. special troops have been sent. israeli pr foreign minister yoav gallant is resigning from the parliament.

he said in his statement today that the government must prioritize the release of israeli hostages in gaza. palestinian authority has suspended broadcast by the qatari news network al jazeera in the occupied west bank. they described to suspend al jazeera's operations over what they describe as broadcasting inciting material and reports seen in the country. they have been angered by the network's coverage of clashes. more than 50 flood warnings are still in place tonight across england, wales, and scotland after torrential rains hit many parts of the u.k. greater manchester police declared a major incident after widespread flooding. emergency workers had to free people trapped in their homes,

the figure is the second highest on record and an increase of 25% the previous year. last year was the deadliest in previous years with 77 people died attempting to cross. simon jones reports. assignment: the votes have been getting bigger, with more and more people dangerously packed onto then, risking their lives in the world's busiest shipping lane with the goal of reaching the u.k. this is christmas day when more than fit -- 450 migrants made the crossing. >> to see that many people all around the edge, some of them dragging the water, it was massively out of the loading, and we actually stopped our engines and sort of sat in that position just watching, to make sure that nothing had sort of gone wrong. s in 2024 from a total of 36,816 people reached the u.k. on small boats. that represents an increase of 25% on 2023, though it is a fall

of 20% in 2020 two. the conservative government, stopping the votes have been proposed by the major government with the promise of smashing the gangs organizing the crossings. it's here at the home office that arrivals are poured over. labour said the previous government left an appalling government of broken border security, allowing gangs to take hold. the conservative say they have scrapped plans that means effectively no deterrent. last year was the deadliest on record for crossings. the french authorities say more than 75 people lost their lives. at least three people died on sunday when their boat got into difficulty off the coast of northern france. >> what the government needs to do is not just try and smash to enforce the activity, they need to continue to do that but also critically impose legal routes so that people fleeing the war in sudan, for example, was

elon musk confirming in the last few months that this was caused by very large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented cybertruck. you can see one person dead inside that vehicle, and around seven others suffering minor injuries. the las vegas metropolitan police department confirmed. this happened around 8:40 a.m. local time. we will bring you more on those developments here on bbc news, so do stay with us here on the channel. ♪
