thousands of families have been fleeing australia's third biggest city. the state capital faces its worst flooding in 60 years. the mayor warned 20,000 homes could be swamped. one levy has been breached. 14 people were reported dead. 90 are missing after flooding west of the city. our correspondent reports. >> after weeks of flooding, this was the most fatal hour. the town of toowoomba. locals spoke of a terrifying inland tsunami. with the power to wash away cars and vans. to pull people from their homes

so many families are trying to leave its low-lying suburbs. brisbane is having to contend with water from three different directions, rainfall from the sky, tide, adn thnd surging floodwaters. the waters are expected to rise to meters within the next 24 hours. this was supposed to be the week when queensland was a gentle recovery mode. the floods of 2011 still have a way to go. >> joining us from australia, welcome. what is the latest? >> thanks for having me. we're expecting a significant flood through the city of brisbane and in the city of

ipswich. this is a major flood for us. we saw high tide this afternoon and reaching 5.5 meters, level of the 1974 flood peak during thursday. just to put into perspective, brisbane is 8.35 in 1993. we are below that but very significant. >> the warning is the people in those low-lying areas still to evacuate, is that right? >> certainly. people have been doorknocking and issuing sandbags. they are advising residents to move to higher ground as soon as possible. >> how worrying is this? you have mentioned those floods and said it is not quite as

severe as back in the 19th century. it must be concerned about their livelihood and their homes. >> the flooding in 1974 in brisbane and other regions of queensland was very well known and is still referred to as one of australia's largest natural disasters. in terms of people affected and in military terms, that was excessive. you could imagine population growth is continuing. we're expecting the release significant amount of people to be effective with this flooding. we will have to monitor the situation closely in the next 24 to 48 hours. >> thanks for being with us. a judge in los angeles has

ordered that michael jackson's personal doctor, conrad murray, should stand trial on charges of involuntary manslaughter over the singer's death. our corresponded is in los angeles getting more details about the decision. >> it means that dr. conrad murray will go on trial for involuntary manslaughter in front of the jury. this was a preliminary hearing for the judge to assess the evidence and to see whether in his view there was enough evidence to take this to trial. he thinks there is. he did have something else to say about dr. conrad murray's ability to practice medicine in the meantime. he revoked his medical license in california, saying there was extraordinary circumstances that meant the continued practice of medicine posed an imminent danger to the people of california. he is allowed to practice medicine in his home state of

texas and nevada. the ruling may encourage authorities to look again at his ability to practice medicine while he goes on trial. >> what about the timeline of all this? how long is this likely to take? >> it is not entirely clear. this is a case of that will come down to the scientific evidence. even aa couple weeks ago, the sides were arguing in court over certain items of evidence, test- tube evidence. this is continuing on some of the items that were taken from michael jackson's room. they could be a matter of weeks or months before this comes to trial in front of a jury. >> more fatal clashes in tunisia sparked by protests over unemployment.

one of northern ireland's best known sporting figures said he is heartbroken over the death of his daughter. she was murdered in russia's -- mauritius. she was on honeymoon with her husband john. she was found dead in the couple's hotel room. police say they believe she was strangled. her family in northern ireland has been left stunned. >> she was a lovely girl. she was a wonderful daughter. we always treasure. she was a beautiful girl. we are so, so sorry. >> michaella was always at her father's side. he is the manager of thea footbl team. they even appeared together on

irish chat shows. >> her profile got higher when she competed in the contest. her wedding 12 days ago was a big event. here in belfast, it made front- page news, reflecting how widely known her family is. less than two weeks later, the same newspapers are reporting her death. -- reporting her death at the age of 27. the police spoke to her husband and quickly ruled him out as a suspect. it is believed she may have been killed by thieves who broke into her bedroom. it happened on one of the last days of her honeymoon. the church where she got married, the wedding flowers are still there as preparations began for her funeral.

significant changes at this event? >> newland is expecting sweeping changes in policy. the delegates will think hard to adapt to their fundamentals of the socialist system to fresh challenges in modern times. many say that the adoptions the party is following is somewhat out of date and needs to be in tune with the current situation. it is interesting to see how they will come up with policies at the end of this nine day event. >> the u.s. presidential commission is investigating the oil spill in the gulf of mexico and has made wide-ranging reform recommendations. they called for tougher government regulation and more money and training. one of them blamed the spill on

years of complacency and carelessness. the big three u.s. , companies are back on track but they do not have an easy ride ahead. our correspondent reports from detroit. >> even in the home town of the big three american car makers, hyundai is starting to make inroads. he bought a santa fe. >> the gas mileage, they say the car lasts longer. i wanted to try it. i am willing to try something else. >> this to the ship has gone from selling 10 cars a month to 100 at the peak. how does george the owner explained the brand's success? >> last year was a banner year. we have been in the backyard of the big three.

we have our challenges. people are shopping with their pockets picked -- pocketbook. they woul>> 5% of cars sold in e u.s. were hyundai. the company's executives want to make sure they have american car buyers' attention. this is he problem will not be g buyers but building them fast enough to keep robust demand. >> 2010 was a breakthrough for the brand. our plants are running full speed and our biggest challenge will be on the supply side. >> there are others harboring american ambitions. volkswagen wants to become the world's biggest car maker. to do that, it must sell more

vehicles in the u.s. to achieve the same reputation that it boasts elsewhere in the world. vw laid out the company goals. >> we have some big conditions. we grew by 20%. we're looking to build our business of over a quarter of a million vehicle sales. another 200,000 for the audi brand. that is one meal -- 1 million vehicles sales in the u.s. market. it is a lot of growth but there is a lot in the market. >> more than just american muscle car, the industry continues to diversify. brands that barely registered in detroit are starting to gain traction. >> our headlines. thousands of people living in brisbane have been urged to leave their homes because of the flooding. that is our world news. i am alistair yates.
