immediately clear the rebels' enthusiasm was fading. it has carried them 150 miles along the coast,ç beating colol gaddafi's troops back but now their supply lines are stretched. gaddafi's troops are starting to fight on more friendly territory. yesterday we went with the rebels to the next town which they attacked fiercely, but the defenders hadç better weapons. this morning we found the rebels had faded away during the night. from a distance we saw a check point which we decide it was probably manned by gaddafi willis. it was. a couple of soldiers opened fire in our direction. ç>> keep your head down. >> we drove back down the road to the important oil town

captured by the rebels on friday night. far fewer of them were making a stand here. >> the rebels have been forced all the way back here. çit seems quite a success for gaddafi's army. as the guns blazed away, a rational built -- russian built air force came in for the attack. whether the pilot mist on purpose wasç not clear. we did not wait to find out. it landed just there. we got to move over here away from the [inaudible] we better take cover here. the rebels only answer to gaddafi's airç power is their

running out of money. >> we have three months of money. >> with the unrest continuing in libya, un has launched anç aid appeal to help those fleeing. there are concerns about sanitation and the possibility of disease. the appeal covers a range of humanitarian needs, including shelter and health care. this is based on projections for hundred thousand people could leave libya. half of which have already gone. çover 600,000 people inside libya may need help. >> this appeal requires $160 million to achieve its objective over a three month budgeting horizon. it will be revised inç two wees to reflect the evolving situation.

>> a french warship has arrived in tunisia to deliver aid for those stuck at the libyan border. there are 40 tons of supplies here. the number of refugees crossing the border has gone down over recent days. organizations fear people could be stranded on the other side in libya. ç>> we have been speaking to people about their views on intervention -- foreign intervention. the newly appointed interim government in tunisia as a çresult the secret place -- resolve the secret police. many blame the human rights abuses during the rule of president ben ali. thousands of policemen have staged a demonstration in the algerian capital. they were demanding better pay

white house. a break withç the bush years ordering the closure of guantanamo bay within a year. two years later that policy is in tatters. the camp could stay open for the foreseeable future. it was a sign of white house embarrassment it did not announce the u-turn at all. it put out word it was resuming militaryç trials suspended for the past two years. they admitted the 172 detainees would remain. among them was alleged 9/11 shaikh, lead --ç sheik mohamme. >> he was beating his head against the brick wall with the old congress which was resisting. the new congress be more republican he has said i have to live with this situation. it is not a battle i will win.

chief of mexico has been sacked for abandoning her post. ça woman has admitted killing r three young children she pleaded guilty to the charges on the grounds of the ministers on stability. she will be sentenced next month. -- grounds of diminished responsibility. >> seven months ago this woman killed her three children and tried to killç herself. today she came to court to admit her crimes. she pled guilty to culpable homicide on grounds of diminished responsibility. her victims were 8-year-old twins and their sister who died atç her mother's hands a few ds before her sixth birthday. theresa broke down in tears as details of the injuries she inflicted on her own children

were set out in court. each child was stabbed repeatedly and died of stab wounds to the chest. after the hearing the children's father appeared outside court as a statement was read on his behalf. ç>> the loss of my three childn has been an overwhelming tragedy. i and my extended family loved autin, luke and cecilia dearly. they live in our minds forever. >> the children died in thç flat she moved into following the breakdown of her marriage. she sent her children to another place because she could not bear losing custody of them. for lawyer said she loved them too much. psychiatrists think she suffered paranoia and other personality disordersç which caused a woman who gave life to

troops attacking protesters strongholds, çpeople are now beginning to change their minds. what about you? would you accept foreign help now? >> we will accept foreign help. a no-fly zone will -- they can make [unintelligible] sort] >> [unintelligible] çsome other places where he has his troops. we don't mind surgical bombing in there. we don't mind a no-fly zone over libyaç because he is using his airplanes to kill people. we cannot deal with that. we have no power in the skies.

but no foreign troops on the ground. a no-fly zone would be enough. >> that has been an opinion shared by anyone you care to ask. yes toç a no-fly zone. why has it not been put in place already? but absolutely no to foreign troops on the ground. >> we spoke to the executive director of the foreign policy initiative. i asked himç what he thought washington should do now. >> i think the administration has been saying this is on the table for some time but unfortunately we have been waiting and no one in the west seems to be willing to take action. we need to be moving toward some sort of military intervention. the first that being a no-fly zone overç libya to ensure the regime can i use their assets

against civilians. >> that seems to be something washington is not so keen on. we heard them talking about this decision for weeks but it seems within the last couple of days them going back onç that. do they not want to be tied into another place in the middle east with military intervention? >> there is a concern about being over extended. the department of the defense has been probably the most reticent about pursuing a no-fly zone. the fact is president obama continues to come out and say gaddafi needsç to leave and should not be carrying out violence against his civilians. a no-fly zone or some effort to limit the ability of the regime is probably the most limited form of intervention the u.s. and other allies should carry >> some have said it is not clear they will get the backing

from russia and china. do you think the u.s. will seek a me to note -- seek a nato mandate for it? >> i don't think you and security council resolutions are required. it is clearç russia and china e likely to support such a measure, but previous cases where the u.s. work with nato allies or even several nato allies, uk, france, if they decide to do this it will be justified. çwe see a massive amount of humanitarian casualty's and civilian deaths increasing. it is incumbent upon the u.s. to act as quickly as possible. >> the american actor charlie sheen has been sacked from the hit tv show "two and a half men." çwarner brothers made the decision after careful consideration. this comes amid a frenzy of u.s.

media reports on his controversial personal life. he recently criticized the show's producers. sheen was inevitable. >> judging by charlie sheen's behavior over the last few weeks appearing by american talk shows and the seemingly incoherent ramblings and criticizing me showsç manageme, in very outspoken terms. his language has been very colorful. he has launched his own internet chat show which was widely criticized as well. his rambling seems to have been more n]ense as the days go by. it is no surprise that should happen with warner brothers television issuing this

statement, that they have terminated charlie sheen's services on "two and a half men" immediately and described him as appearing to be very ill. >> was that statement actually çmade after the markets have closed? you can see what the warner brothers share price does. that is a massive television program. >> it is a massive tv show although last week they decided they would stop production because of the charlie sheen çsituation, said the people who work on it were well aware it was in limbo. now it is a question mark over its future whether they could replace charlie sheen and since he is such an integral part of the show. there are so many people in hollywoodç who rely on this shw for their livelihood. >> give us an idea of what prompted this fall from grace

regarding charlie sheen's career. >> he is known to have trouble with drugs in the past. he wasç involved in an altercation with his estranged wife. he was sentenced to drug rehabilitation and has made no secret -- he claims to be free of drugs although his behavior is bizarre. >> when mary took over as head on the mexican borderç town she shocked -- shot to worldwide fame. that is because at age 20 she was the only person willing to take the job. after failing to attend to work after a break she has been fired. ç>> when she stepped into the role many dug married the most courageous woman in mexico. now she appears to have

abandoned her post as the chief of police. she leaves behind an empty desk in a town that had been relativelyç peaceful, but local reports said she had been the victim of death threats. it would be no surprise in an area where police are routinely murdered. such dangers did not seem to bother her when she took the job six months ago. it i am here today and not tomorrow. if i am here today then i will do what has value. >> at the family home there has been no sign of a person's last week when she asked for leave to care for her son. she may have fled to the u.s. to seek asylum. afterç not being able to get hd of her, the mayor fired her. >> after her removal after all this we will analyze different

they areç now ready for its parade. they have managed to rebuke many of the floats that have been destroyed in the fire and many of the costumes. they are bringing a beautiful carnival. maybe not as grandioseç or glamorous as some as the other big celebrations, but a terrible -- very beautiful party all the same. there are 12 summer schools here in rio de janeiro. ♪ çit works a little like [unintelligible] with the premier league and lower division. this is the night for the best here. this is the set up area. this is where the party begins for the people who will take part in theç parade. you can see everybody getting ready.

we heard the choreography and putting on their costumes for the 18 minutes of parades' in front of thousands of people. it is a very beautiful party in brazil. the biggest party in this country. even theç fire [unintelligible] many people say since carnival this year will be less competitive -- much of the true spirit from the party that has become more commercial over the years will come back. >> some amazing pictures from hawaii. look at this volcano. love the been shot 65 feet into the air. it has been inç constant eruption for 28 years. areas could erupt without warning. you are watching "bbc world news."
