>> new fears of a double-dip recession as american jobs figures are worse than expected. the world market slides as the u.s. fails to create jobs last month. a plane crashes on route to a remote islands to a pacific island. syria has promised government collections. welcome to bbc news broadcast our viewers on pbs in america. the nuclear energy agency says it is increasingly concerned that iran is working on a nuclear weapons program. and protests in yemen, holding mass demonstrations in the capital.

hello, and welcome. share prices fell sharply on wall street and in europe after the u.s. issued the worst employment figures for a year. 14 million people are out of work in america. experts fear that the u.s. economy is slipping back into recession. our north american editor reports. >> obama is the first president since the second world war to witness a month where overall, no new jobs were created. no president has ever been reelected with unemployment so high. 14 million americans are looking for work. jobs were wiped out by the public sector in getting rid of exactly the same number of people. the dow jones fell 253 points.

it may be a statistical free, but it is also a symbol. america might be teetering on the edge of another recession. >> it is important for obama to indicate that the administration's attempts to help the economy have failed. >> unemployment has come down, but the rate has hovered around 9%. the white house predicts it will stay that high next year, too. they're off on a holiday weekend because monday is labor day. next week, he has a big speech to the whole congress to unveil a new plan to create jobs but republicans are likely to kill it. >> if they don't support his plan, he will go out to the public and take the message to them directly.

the assumption is that they have all died. but the armed forces saying they are still hoping to find the survivors. if sent a plane from the mainland, and they have sent a frigate and helicopter. the assumption is that the plane has crashed. it is unlikely there will be survivors, but they have not confirmed that. >> opposition forces in libya are claiming a number of colonel gaddafi's sons are hiding out southeast of the capital of tripoli. they talk more about the ceasefire. >> this is where the rebel government starts to run out. less than 100 miles from the

capital. there were no wild celebrations. there are a few that remain loyal. it is unwise to explore too far off of the main road where some neighborhoods still fly the green flag. >> a green flag over on top of that building, a group of men who shouted when we went in that direction. the atmosphere in the town is really tense. >> some of the family fled this way. others are believed to be in hiding. >> who do you think is there of the gaddafi family? >> [speaking foreign language]

>> you believe they are both there? how sure are you? 90% sure they are there. we left the front line behind and drove on. for now, this is effectively no man's land. we found a steady stream of families that have been ordered to get out in case there was an attack. i just wanted to find out what is the situation? >> to afraid to appear on camera, few even dare to mention their names. some tell us that the gaddafi family left the area of few days ago. and that troops were preparing for battle. >> of the town is about 40 miles in that direction, but it is unsafe to go any further because much of it is still in the hands

of the old regime. they have now agreed with the people to stand to one side and allow them to talk directly to colonel gaddafi's military. the hope is that they can bring a peaceful ending to one of the last standoffs of this revolution. >> is a vast country with many ways to escape and places to hide. if the family has been here, finding them will be hard. >> libya's national transition council claims that most of the country is secure and safe, it is just a matter of time before colonel gaddafi is caught or killed. they say elections could take place by 2013 and have caused guns to be taken off the streets of tripoli, no easy task.

the camera. the whistle blowing website has released its full archive of u.s. embassy cables on line. many if not all of the documents appear to be an edited with spoken names and details of informants. it took the decision after they became available on line due to a security breach. >> in media organizations such as the guardian in london, there is anger over the wikileaks to publish the unredacted u.s. diplomatic cables. until now, the release of the cables have been tightly controlled. the move to make public all of the confidential documents have

today been condemned by media partners. the guardian says that this flies in the face of efforts by news organizations to redact references to confidential informants before publishing selected cables. his wish as have been realized. after a year punctuated by his arrest, quarrels with former associates, and a chapter of accidents, he is the founder of wikileaks. extraditionghting where he is wanted for questioning over a separate matter, a case of alleged rape and sexual assault. under tight security, they were stored here on servers. it did not seem that they intended to release the entire collection of u.s. cables.

it is described as comprehensive and credible, activities possibly related to a nuclear payload. iran describes the report as baseless and points to recent cooperation with the agency. for a senior inspector visiting other facilities, including here where iran has begun installing machines that will continue and expand the iranian enrichment program that can be used as fuel or to make an atomic bomb. they say the new report shows that it is cooperating. diplomatic sources are skeptical. talks between iran and the members of broken-down. the right to produced enriched uranium recognized. >> reports from syria say that seven people have been killed as demonstrators came out in force.

protesters were reportedly killed in the east. there were also protests in the south. authorities in colombia have arrested more than 30 people into operations against the illegal drug trade. police seized cocaine and confiscated 21 light aircraft, honey, and a small submarines. air-traffic controllers are accused of carrying drugs across central america. in yemen, pro and anti- government protesters have held a mass demonstrations. it may give militants more control of the country. the president is still in saudi arabia recovering from an attack in june.
