>> and now "bbc world news." >> security forces in syria clash with anti-government protestors. at least 35 people are dead. an explosion at a market in nigeria kills four. it's been blamed on the islamist group boko haram. >> welcome to bbc news broadcasting to our viewers on pbs in america and around the globe. coming up a little later, a deadly cyclone hits independence yea's southeast coast with heavy rains and strong winds.

>> opposition forces opened fire on friday as they try to stop hundreds of thousands of protestors across the country from demonstrating in front of arab league observers. 35 people were killed in flash point cities such as hama, dera and homs. >> a mass turnout of anti-government protestors across the country after friday prayers. >> and as has been the case all week, violence. this is dumar a suburb of the capital damascus. demonstrators fought running battles with security forces. people did the best they could to help the injured.

nearby, there appeared to be a large number of arrests. what happened to these men is not known. we cannot verify these pictures, but across syria, ackvists say dozens were killed today. and also this under the eyes of arab league observers surrounded by people desperate to tell their story. since the observers started work four days ago, activists say that over 100 people have been killed. more than 60 monitors on the ground have managed to visit a few of these places. but exactly what they saw and what they will conclude is not clear. whatever they say is unlikely to be agreed on by both sides. many opposition activists have fled here to lebanon and they don't believe the observers are doing their job.

>> the arab league stated that there's a violation against civilians and this mission must go to ensure their safety. and this is not what's happening. i think they're being misunderstood. >> today state television showed pictures of pro government rallies in the capital damascus. the authorities say they're facing a terrorist insurge si. syria is divided, hedging toward civil war. the arab league has been there to bear witness. but crucially what will it say? >> our correspondent in damascus now analyzes whether the country has slipped into civil war. >> it's hard to say it is a civil war. civil war is when clashes between two armed groups, but the situation is different on the ground.

and there are unarmed civilian forces that are taking to the spreet staging their opinions and they are being sought by security forces and that's how the protestors and the activists and the groups are saying. but the government says that it is facing armed insurgency. now in the last few months we saw that more and more army as defectors have joined the opposition by defending them from the army. but i wouldn't say that the situation is turning into a civil war. >> a syrian activists said friday was some of the biggest scenes since president assad's government began. >> we say the who process there were around 50,000 protestors all day long today. it was a great day for

damascus' uprising. for syria, it was absolutely massive. we had around 300,000 protestors in front of the monitors of people who get really excited. they really gathered massively as i mentioned. and it was just like in front of their eyes. >> the government seems to think that if it kills enough people it will stop the anti-government process. is there going to come a point where people will be too scared to come out on to the streets and protest against president assad? >> that's not going to happen. no matter how the killing gets more, no matter how ugly it gets, we're still going to go down the streets, you know, seek for our freedom, do whatever it takes peacefully.

the regime is blind. they lost the defense of their reality. so many casualties. they're not going stop. and we're not going to stop. we're not going to stop either. >> an army spokesman described the explosion as a major blow and the group is boko haram. >> the victims of nigeria's christmas day bombing are still recovering. they ran from a church in the town of madala near abuja. this man escaped with severe burns and so did this 18-month old boy. >> the mother tells the story. >> i was confused, shocked. we didn't know what to do.

>> their church in tatters. these christian nigerians now have to find another place to worship. the islamist group boko haram says it was responsible for the attack. but it now appears they have struck again. they blasted the marketplace and left dozens injured. the town is at the center of boko haram activity. here, its membered mixed with the migration. the group believed to have orchestrated church bombings. while muslim leaders have been assassinated. >> the group was founded in 2002 but a muslim cleric who wants to impose sharia law. in recent months nigeria army has planned a group offensive.

this time to go to the united states for medical treatment. in bahrain hundreds of protestors march to against the government to take fight against security forces. a senior american official says egypt has assured the united states it will stop raids on the human rights groups and pro democracy groups. they have been assured that all property seized by egyptian security forces during raids on thursday would be returned. the president of the prime minister of turkey have expressed regret and sadness at the deaths of 35 civilians who were all killed in an air force attack in the iraqi border area. thousands of people attended funerals of the victims who were a group of smugglers thought to be kurdish

separatist guerillas. they tracked up these mountain parts. the turkish jets mistook them for kurdish rebels. now they were taken along the parks one last time. many of them were not yet 20. >> the military has issued official condolences to the families. it's an unusual outreach by the armed forces but it's unlikely to impress many people here. the prime minister and president both expressed regret and sadness and said the results of the inquirey will be made public. >> 35 citizens have died, one injured. we are truly sorry. the necessary investigations are underway. the situation will be cleared after the investigation. >> throughout the day and throughout the kurdish southeast, people have been taking to the treats in

protest. in several cities, the demonstrations resulted in clashes with the police. as evening falls, thousands demonstrates on the streets of istanbul. there is incomprehension and anger at the government and the military alike. the conflict has raged here for more than 20 years. fighting between the turkish army and the p.k.k. has escalated in recent weeks. public opinion now wants a tougher line against the occurreds. re-- kurds. wednesday's catastrophic mistake will only make that task harder. >> a cyclone has brought heavy rains and gail force winds to india. it struck near the town of

pondecheri on friday morning. the cyclone made landfall on the south coast factoring the area with rain and strong winds. gusting at up to 140 kilometers an hour. the cyclone damaged houses, uprooted trees and brought down electricity lines. the death were caused by wall collapses an elect tri cushion. disaster management teams have been brought to the district. with storms surges out at sea, fishermen have been advised not to venture out. hundreds of people from fishing communities along the coast have relief centers while the whether system passes. the bad weather has hit trains and flights in the region. trains have been delayed with

church -- christchurch almost 10 months ago. >> still to come -- a chinese couple with eight babies have sparked a debate on the country's sur gasy laws. >> police in pakistan say a car bomb has killed nine people and injured many others. the explosion took place near the home of a local politician. it's reported that fire broke out following the blast and that nearby buildings were damaged. 14 people from the same family have been killed in a dispute over land in the central province of punjab. most of them were burned alive in their own homes. our correspondent is alim. he has sent thus report. >> they gathered to mourn after a horrific domestic tragedy. 14 members of the same extended family killed in a dispute.

the european union will return to recession in 2012. here with the view from the city of london our correspondent hugh penning. >> a gloomy year closes in the city of london with shares down over the year. the first time since 2008. but the decline wasn't as big as in the french and german markets. that reflects a troubled year for the euro zone with protests over capitals and spending cuts. the spanish government warns that borrowing was higher as it set out tough new budget plans. >> these measures are only the beginning. the first step in a package of structural reform to correct the deficit and make our economy more dynamic. >> this weekend saw the launch of euro notes and coins with celebrations around member countries. now it's a very different mood with the country's currency in

question. 37 economists responded. 19% predicted the euro zone won't exist in its current zone by the end of 2012. >> it's our central view that a recession will hit the euro zone some time next year in 2012. we think it will last right into the middle of the year but that will have a very negative impact on the u.k. economy as well. >> many are wondering what the bank of london will do. 9-10 of economists belief that another year will go by with no change in the cost of borrowing. so what does that mean for the housing market despite all the uncertainty average prices rose this year and it anticipates another small rise in 2012. >> labor market conditions are likely to remain pretty weak

grabbed the attention in china but not for being cute. the babies are from one family something that's controversial in a country that limits one child to most couples. confusion remains exactly when the babies were born and who gave birth to them. but a well-off couple spent about $160,000 dollars and enlisted two surrogate mothers to have them have the four boys an four girls. the biological mother carried two of the babies while two surrogates gave birth to the rest in september and october last year. it's also reported that 11 naanees were hired to help take care of the children. although some suspect a hokes, chinese health officials are investigating the hospital and whether some hops are offering suragacy procedures. >> we'll revoke the hospital
