>> and now "bbc world news." >> hello, and welcome to "newsday." >> the failed rescue mission in nigeria, at two western hostages are killed. a green light for the biggest effort government debt restructuring. greece says it has overwhelming support. >> we talked to some of those affected by the tragedy of the tsunami. china's football season kicks off -- broadcasting to viewers on pbs in america and around the world. this is "newsday."

>> in nigeria, it to foreign hostages have been killed during a rescue operation. the men were both construction engineers. british special forces were involved in the failed rescue attempt. the been that -- the men were kidnapped last may. the british prime minister said there was evidence that they were in imminent and growing danger. our security correspondent reports. >> chris mcmanus, a british hostage held for nearly a year in nigeria. he and an italian were killed today. >> preparations were made to mount an operation to attempt to rescue them. i authorized it to go ahead with your case support. it is of great regret i have to say that both have lost their lives.

we are still awaiting confirmation of the details, but the early indications are clear that both men were murdered by their captors before they could be rescued. >> the two engineers working for a construction company when they were kidnapped in northwest nigeria. both chris mcmanus and franco lamolinara or taken from a house on may 12 last year. there was little public to be at the time, but a video emerged last august. it was the first proof of life. another video in december included what was seen as a credible threat to kill them. after a long search, new intelligence led to the men been tracked down to the house. the prime minister made the decision to launch a military operation involving its belief -- working in support with nigerian forces. after a fierce battle, the

hostages were found dead. the group holding the men are believed to be a splinter of boko haram, an increasingly violent nigerian islamist organization. the group may have developed links with al qaeda, who have a history of kidnapping westerners in north africa trade the family of chris mcmanus -- in north africa. the family of chris mcmanus issued a statement. hostage rescues are always risky operations, this case ended tragically. >> it has become clear that david cameron did not consult the italian authorities before he gave the go-ahead for the operation. we asked the italian senator

not made. they say that they are in regular touch with rome. yes, they were in contact with the italian administration once the rescue mission was underway. they did not make a call to say, shall we go for it? they say they did not have time. there was evidence that they had to rescue these men straight away because their lives were in imminent danger. they had to press ahead with that without any sort of hesitation. >> the greek government has indicated that it is confident that completing a crucial deal with private investors, which will bring down its debt, and secure a second international bailout. the head of the imf has said that it looks as if the numbers will be promising. our europe editor has more details from athens. >> all the indications from government ministers that

between 80, 85, even 90% of private investors have agreed to take a steep losses on their holdings of greek debt. what does this mean? for the first time since this whole crisis started, tonight, at grace -- greece's debt will not be going up. the eu and the imf almost certainly will not go ahead with a second great bailout. the country will stave off bankruptcy. there is some relief tonight, but so many -- that so many investors have agreed to take losses. >> to date has been made to the six british soldiers that were killed by a bomb on tuesday. five of the group were under the age of 22. they had only been in the country for a few weeks.

their commanding officer described them as incredibly brave man. it's was one year ago this sunday that the huge earthquake struck off the coast of japan and sparked a tragedy, which the country has yet to recover from. >> that is right. 15,000 people were killed and the tsunami that wiped out entire communities. thousands are still missing. lots crossover to our correspondents. what is happening with the anniversary commemoration this weekend? >> there will be ceremonies across japan. there was a 250-year-old for this year that made it a major tourist attraction. the tsunami swept over these buildings behind me and right into the valley.

they have been gathering up the remains of the town into piles. there are new telegraph lines, new electricity poles. there has not been much rebuilding. shops and bars are springing up in prefabricated huts on the edge of the town. many people are living in temporary housing. we be -- we need a family that was caught up in this disaster. a avoid full of memories. -- a void full of memories. >> i just wish i could go back in time. go back to that day.
