surprised -- you're black? from losod evening angeles, i am tavis smiley. tonight is our 2000th at the soda. from the opening montage, you get a sense of the range of people we have had on this program. conversations that we go have inspired and entertain you. when we think about what has gone into this decade-long journey, we wanted to share some memorable moments with you tonight. we are glad you have joined us and we look at the 10 years and counting on pbs. >> there is a saying that dr. king had. he said, there is always the right time to do the right thing. i just try to live my life every day by doing the right thing. we know that we are only about halfway to completely eliminate hunger and we have work to do. walmart committed $2 billion to fighting hunger in the u.s.

as we work together, we can stamp hunger out. >> and by contributions to your pbs station from viewers like you. thank you. tavis: one of the many pleasures of doing this program is getting the opportunity not only to present a great musical performances, but to talk to some exceptional artist that rarely get the chance to talk about what they do, but they are, and how they do it. here are highlights from the many excellent musicians that shared on this stage with us.

message that either is supported --the music or contrasts >> when i play music, i would like to think i am the most -- host and your and my living room. >> it is when we are afraid and you will never reach the potential. e my workeople criticis and attack my personality, i can't do anything with it.

>> you try to copy the best people. try to sing a dolly parton song but i can't do certain things that she can. but i want to sing that song. >> they trumpet the idea of being famous, making money, or being successful. i tried to be a better musician.

♪ tavis: and that is just warming up? >> working in out. tavis: reading on beethoven, there was a time when they were trying to ban his music. take a guess. it was too sexy. ♪ ♪

♪ [applause] we started on pbs, one of our goals was to introduce americans to each other, providing a platform for diverse experiences and the point of view. these conversations have had their own trajectory. that is exactly what i have done, followed amazing guests down some surprise in paths of discovery. ofsurprising paths discovery. ♪

>> to the senate that would be a great job if we didn't have to vote. tavis: i have been waiting to have you here so i could beat you up. >> in the day i am inaugurated, we have to repair our standing in the world. messenger believe via that i can deliver that in no way that no other candidate can.

>> tell me what you will about your creative process where you're riding is concerned. tavis: your smile, that one right there, how important has that been to your overall success? i mean people's this position. -- disposition. >> these people that turned off on urban america, they just did not want to build at the community.

>> it is a value to have everybody participating. they have an equal employment -- tavis: it is one of those reeds. >> is not like boxing or you're leaning on each other and you can feel each other. if you look at a tennis player, is like solitary confinement out

there. it always leads to self talks. have never seen another sport where an athlete talk to themselves. >> it is like a quenin tarantino movie that you don't know what the hell is going on until you know what the hell is going on. i have been through bad stuff that are not as joyous as i am. i am in the prime of my life. >> i love what i have done, so everybody thinks that these are the interviews i have done,

thousands of them. but these are the men that i have had relationships with. and your name is not here. tavis: might is not there. i am not hearing that, but it is not there. everybody,not for dancing is not for everybody. >> i am not saying that you should be great, but you should be able to roast a chicken for yourself or make an omelet for somebody just slept with. would that be nice? tavis: i have no follow-up to that one. i will leave that alone. >> i asked for eggs benedict. why, and if it was a conscious decision for you to not remarry after all these years. >> let me just say, why aren't you married?

[applause] ♪ ♪ >> bin laden said one of his goals was to bankrupt america. bernie madoff beat you to it. tavis: thought we would end with a retrospective at the actors that shared thoughts with us over the years, sometimes funny and sometimes poignant. the wonderful moments to cherish including an iconic introduction in that just about made my entire decade. >> and now, ladies and gentlemen, here's tavis! tavis: i love it! ♪ ♪

>> it is not serious. >> music, all the different asic -- i know jamie foxx, long as he knows how to play the blues. my motherm proud of because she is a wonderful dancer and she has been married so many times. >> i love being part of the company.

>> it is always a terrible mistake for everybody to death by their nature. and there is expansion and there are limitations. you can always find narcissism. the limitation is what you pay attention to. >> i hope there are a bunch of ladies behind me. there are so many different people -- a woman has opened the film. >> i think of myself as the mud of the letter.

i am not purebred. there are actors that are my contemporaries that i think of as purebred. i am not. i'm street mutt. >> black artist can only tell the truth about humanity and people are messy. ,, i was watching one of my old movies on television and i could not remember the movie. , and i said, wait a minute, that is not me, that is michael. [laughter] >> ben and i had a joint bank account the only thing you could take money on four trips to audition or if we both decided we would convene a board meeting to take out $10 to play video games. [laughter] tavis: brought your hat?

can i put this on? >> the horseshoe is in the front. >> one horrible rainy evening, .verybody is hustling he suddenly calls my name and a turnaround, and he says, thank you. >> have you ever jumped out of a window before? i'm not a stunt person. we had just been rehearsing in the rehearsal hall with no set. i'm on set, i guess i will go

after. i sailed out of that window and landed on a mattress. i sat up and i looked around and said, everybody, thank you for the mattress. he ha[laughter] to lookot occur to me outside of what i was going to land on. tavis: what do you make of his career that you have been able to fashion? >> we expected nothing of myself. be a television announcer or something. >> people complained about acting, this is fantastic. this is great, a wonderful life.

it is one step away from the gates of hell being a politician. a young actor, movies, they captivate. tavis: you did not know the pretty woman would be the biggest movie ever? >> we had a good time. tavis: welcome roseanne who's starred and created one of tv's most popular sitcoms. >> hi. whatever. tavis: that wasn't your view yet. sit tight and i will show some clips. ♪ ♪

>> this is the denzel washington show. i will be taking his place for a few years. and keep the faith. [laughter] keep the faith, but send the money. tavis: very funny. keep the faith but send the money. that could be a pbs slogan. my intention doing this program was and still is to enlighten, and courage, and empower. i hope we continue to do that in the years to come. us and asfor joining always, keep the faith. ♪
