>> welcome back. the change. the germans have a special term for the transformation the country went through from 1989- 90 after the fall of t berlin wall. it culminated on october 3, when the former communist east became one with west germany, a day many headlong for ever since the war and which the nation will celebrate this sunday. this change has brought a tectonic shift that reshaped the countries politics, economy, and culture. the process was poignant and painful, particularly in the beginning. it was a time that people recall as if it were yesterday. nearly everyone h a memory, some withelieanothers with the salsa.

we asked a few germans to share their stories of what was lost and what was gained. -- some with relief and some with nostalgia. >> the searches at the border were really bad back then. some female police just about stopped being naked. they kept asking, why are you taking in english courts? my grandmother was shaking with fear of side for me. it was unpleasant. >> it felt like -- children are safer bet than in east germany. this cooling -- the schooling was more organized. >> the supply of goods, well, there were few shortages but they made up for it socially, meaning that people helped one another more back then than they

do now. >> i can still remember that my mother sent packages to east germany -- chocolate and christmas things -- and we always got a special kind of fruit cake back. that is my connection to east germany. >> the security was in allusion. it concealed the ha set of -- ad many former east germans have a positive memory of it in the back of their mind. v>> simply shows that many germans look back with mixed memories 20 years on. there is no denying the hardships that easterners faced

in a command economy with a daily shortages, and yet germany's tradition of high quality manufacturing survived, even uer adver conditions. take the mz motorcycle. it's dependability and durability has given at a legendary status in places such as cuba. >> you can see andnd hear them everywhere. it is estimated that there are some 15,000 motorbikes in cuba, and 10,000 of them are mz's. they are more than 20 years old and need to be repaired now and then. >> i am trying to get ts on running again. there are nno spare parts, so we have to be invented. >> there is public transportation in santiago. taking a bus cost just a few
