we're so glad that you're here. >> well i am too. >> people have been a little surprised of all the styles of music that you've done but doo wop touches your heart, doesn't it? >> yeah, you know when i was a kid i grew up going to the movies seeing roy rogers and gene autry, the cowboys. my mom and dad they were big nat king cole fans. i was a big hank williams fan. my brother art was the first doo-wopper and he let me sing with his group and the doo-wop took over. [laughs] the doo-wop did it and took over. well you know what, this program, this dvd and cd have some great songs on it as well. ting-a-ling, right? what was your favorite one? i know it's hard. it's like picking your children but what was your favorite. >> all of them. [laughs] >> i can tell you story about ting-a-ling. i was like 12 years old and when you listen to the words you can see. well i'm a poor young boy and these girls are about to drive me wild, you know. the way you rock and roll and

[laughs] i love it. >> and it had little dance called the turkey hop. that's the only dance i know besides the zumba but i ain't doing the zumba on tv. of that venue in brooklyn? >> it was just a great venue, i didn't even hear them bowling but i knew they were at it but the important thing was the people that were there, they were into what i was doing, me and the fellas and everybody was just having a great time. >> well and that's what public television can do so well, put you right there in the front row so that you can feel what an artist really is all about. i feel like i've always been a fan but now i know a little bit more and i kind of get that compassion that you bring to your work. what are you trying to do with your music? what do you want people to leave with? >> well it's a message. all of the songs are coming from my heart, and music to me is like medicine and i want it to be medicine to you. you know, listen to it and have a warm heart, a calm heart. >> oh i like that, a warm heart, and a calm heart. you know what, you're speaking our language. you can have this in your home

[laughs] >> the university of doo... >> i went to the university of doo wopology. got a masters. >> how has music been healing to you? because you know your life hasn't always been a bed of roses for you. you've been around the block a few times. >> a couple of time yeah. i mean music has always, since i was a little kid you know. if i got punished i had a song in my head so i wasn't really punished. they thought i was punished

i'd be kneeling in the corner or whatever, you know. but i can sing something to myself. one day i was my first wife joel she was gone and i was sitting in the gutter figuring out what i was going to do and i just, this song ave maria came, i didn't even know the words to it, i just knew the lyrical frame of it and i started singing it and it made me feel alright. >> wow and you said, you know, before that music is so healing for you. >> definitely is. >> well you know what, thank you for being here. >> it's been a pleasure. >> he's an icon, he's a poet, he's way cool and he's somebody brought to your home by public television. thank you so much for your support and let's take a look at this. thanks again. >> thank you.
