that's right. as you mentioned, 5.5 inches at somerset and we're still expecting more on this way this evening. we have a little break out there with the flurries, but we could see lingering showers throughout the night tonight as we zoom in on live doppler radar. you can see more showers hitting the reno area and parts of california still getting hit with rainfall. so we are going to see the mixture of snow and rain across the region throughout the night tonight. we could see two more inches of additional accumulation for far western nevada, especially the foothills tonight so above 5,000 feet. we could see that additional accumulation with the winter weather advisory in effect until 7:00 tonight. and then this winter storm warning remains in effect through 10:00, so parts of the sierra could see another two to four inches of snow this evening west of highway 395. tonight we did just hear reports from north star. they have already recorded just about 10 inches of snow today and they could see up to four inches again tonight. so right now a quick look at current conditions.

rain and snow coming down. we'll take a much closer look at this coming up in a few minutes. back to you. >> thank you. new at 4:00 this afternoon, a stand-off in sparks finally ended after the police say they negotiated the surrender of a man named dabble enrick ease and others involved in the case. he barricaded himself inside a home on east o. street around 7:00 this morning. aauthoritys say he did make statements about shooting at police officers, but no shots were fired during the stand- off. according to the sparks police, there were three hostages being held inside the house as well as a fourth unknown person. all four were released without incident before authorities retrieved him from the home. >> the crises negotiators were unable to make any communication with him to get

so, therefore the s.w.a.t. team deployed a chemical agent or gas into the agents, and at that time he came out of the house peacefully and surrendered to the officers on the scene. >> and according to police, he is also a suspect in the shooting at the gold dust west on december 22 as well as a suspect in a robbery at a reno location. he is also a registered sex offender who failed to update his information as is required by the law. a family lawyer says a 20- year-old woman at the center of an end-of-life court battle over treatment has died at a reno hospital while still on life support. and the attorney tells the associated press that she died & at st. mary's regional medical center where she never woke up following abdominal surgery on april 1. the cause appears to have been respiratory failure. the hospital isn't immediately commenting. her father lost a bid last week

the hospital said would show she was brain dead and would not recover. the washoe county sheriff's office has arrested two sun valley women on multiple felony neglect charges. the 61-year-old kathleen dean and the 41-year-old jolene dean have been charged on multiple child neglect and animal cruelty charges following a welfare check that happened this last weekend. according to the police, the deputies found three children living in the home surrounded by animal feces and urine. in total, animal control officers found 10 dogs, 19 cats, 19 birds, two ducks, a turkey, six chickens and 25 sugar gliders at the home. the children are currently with child protective services and the animals are under veterinary care. reno police say go people are under arrest following an armed robbery at a gas station. the officials say it happened at the chevron station on the 10000 block of stead boulevard

they say one suspect is a 17- year-old boy and the other is the 18-year-old christopher kerns. the cashier was reportedly the only person in thester at the time of the robbery. the witnesses say the two suspects pointed a handgun at the cashier and nabbedded much and then ran away. but a police officer who saw them leaving was able to make the arrest. the search for two fishermen misching in pir amid lake was put on pause today due to the weather. the police say the two who are from california did not return home over the weekend. the officials say the two were last heard from on friday when they were fishing in pir amid lake near warrior point. search and rescue teams say they need the public's help to provide them with any information on these two missing men. well, anyone with information pertaining to the missing fishermen are asked to call the pir amid lake fire and rescue team at 560-4417. the school district is sending out an apology to parents this afternoon.

assignment handed out in a social studies class at dayton high school. now before we show you the image that was used in that assignment, we do need to warn you it is pretty graphic. many parents complained about it. and the image is a painting by an artist known for controversy. here it is. that painting. it is called a tale of two hoodies. the artist says he is conveying racism. the superintendent wayne workman says the image was used as a prompt for a writing assignment and a final exam. the picture and angry comments took off on social media, and we spoke to resident whose says the image sends the wrong message to kids. >> i don't think that is an appropriate assignment for a young child like that number one, they need to learn a lot of that stuff on their own by learning history, and is that is kind of putting anytime their face to me it is putting the cops in a bad light. >> i would be down at that school in a minute talking to the teacher. >> and coming up tonight on news 4 at 5:00, terri hendry

of parents as well as the school superintendent. a liberal talk radio host and former chairman of the washoe county democratic party has announced his candidacy for nevada congressional seat that no democrat has ever held chip evans formally announced his plans today to challenge the second district republican. he filed his candidacy papers on saturday with the northwesterly election commission. the republicans have held the largely rural district covering more than half of nevada since it was created in 1982. evans, a former high-tech executive in silicon valley, now hosts the chip evans show airing mondays, and he says he knows his campaign will be an uphill battle, but he wants to be a voice for nevada's working- class families. >> i'm going to run as a democrat in this election, but at the end of the day i consider myself a member of the ticked off party. that is a group of people that are just plain sad that washington is so dysfunctional.

>> the election is coinciding with the 2016 presidential election on november 8. after the ski lift incident this past weekend at heavenly mountain resort, the locals started expressing their concerns about safety with ski lifts, and we reached out to the california division of occupational safety and health to see what those regulations are when it comes to the lifts. the ski lifts we found were year. requirements, the operation also be put on hold. according to the national ski area association, it is very rare to see an injury from a ski lift, but the officials at heavenly have expressed that are apologies and released a statement saying, quote, heavenly has suspended all operations for the north bowl chair lift. heavenly's lift maintenance team will complete a thorough investigation into the cause of the chair's fall, end quote. now, there is no height or weight restriction to ride a ski lift in california. we'll have more details on this story.

first major retailer in 30 years may be coming to downtown reno this year. news 4's jammy hayden joins us live outside the former main u.s. post office on virginia street with more on this. jamie? there is a are the lot of speculation of who that national retail chain is. details are not being released quite yet, but we do know they may soon be calling the former post office home right behind me. now, bernie carter, a midtown and downtown reno developer, tells news 4 he signed a letter of intent to lease the first particular of the former post office to a national retail chain. now, part of the letter of intent includes a non- disclosure agreement, which does prevent him from confirming the name of that national chain. we're told the entire building is several thousand square feet and yesterday actually a market place called the basement, which includes a variety of locally owned shops, opened underneath the first floor, and

many companies are hoping their new tech stimulate sales. through saturday. e-commerce giant amazon says its shoppers ordered a record number of items on monday. the number of items ordered from amazon on cyber monday rose more than 40% exceeding 23 million for the first time. amazon also says it delivered more than a billion items around the world in 2015, and that during the holiday season items shipped worldwide grew more than 60% from a year earlier. all right. i want to toss things over to madison corney who has been following this storm. madison? >> reporter: that's right. that is from our great western sky cam so we are still seeing snow showers out there, depending upon where you are. we are going to continue to see them throughout the night tonight as one storm moves out tonight. another one makes its way in tomorrow morning so in the last hour on live doppler radar, we

far western nevada and, of course, the sierra and we're even expecting additional snow accumulation so with the winter weather advisory for parts of the sierra and far western nevada, we're still expecting another two inches of snow possible above 5,000 feet tonight that winter weather advisory will expire at about 7:00 tonight. the winter storm warning will be in effect until 10:00 tonight for the sierra. we could see anywhere from two to four inches of additional snow accumulation west of highway 395 tonight. so at north star, already recording about 10 inches, and they could see up to four more. so good news for those ski resorts. right now in reno, it is kind of slushy out there with the temperature at 36 degrees, so it is kind of a mix of snow and rain depending upon where you are with winds out of the west at seven miles per hour. around the area, we're still sitting in the mid 30s for the most part. slightly warmer in fallin at 44 degrees. now, on satellite and radar, we're going to see this low pressure system move out east

system makes its way in tomorrow morning. so on future cast, we're still going to see snowfall in the sierra over the next few hours, but then overnight tonight and early tomorrow morning we have quite a break for the sierra and far western nevada. some cloud cover out there, but really not going to see that next system hit until about 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. we're going to start to see anytime the sierra and spilling over by the noon hour and, again, seeing the scattered showers throughout the evening and afternoon -- afternoon and evening tomorrow. so still quite a bit of weather headed our way. tonight in reno and sparks, down to 26 degrees with conditions, and tomorrow the same story, cloudy and snow showers with the daytime high reaching 35 degrees. now, as we head over the eastern nevada, they're going to see that chance of snow tomorrow with light winds. the day time highs in the mid 30s and then the overnight lows in the 20s that's going to be the trend across the area. one of those places dipping down into the teens, though, bridgeport, and also we're looking at the 20s with that

possible across the region tomorrow. and carson city down to 23 degrees and then topping out at 36 degrees tomorrow with that chance for snow. the fallin area, as we saw, we're looking at more of a mix of rain and snow with warmer temperatures out there. much cooler temperatures around the lake with two to four inches possible with tomorrow's storm, and then the winds out of the south at five to 10 miles per hour. heading up north to susanville; we're looking at a daytime high of 34 degrees. it would be a mix of rain and snow there tomorrow as well. but another one to three inches possible throughout the day tomorrow. the majority of the snowfall we're expecting to fall between noon and 8:00 tomorrow, so impacted. if you can wait to make that travel day, make it thursday. the valley floor tonight, in the 20s, and then on your extended forecast, we're looking at a little bit of a break as we head into the city. around the lake we're going to continue to see the showers throughout the weekend and we do have another system making its way in by the beginning of

as you can see on your seven- day, a very cold day ahead of bus day time highs in the 30s over to you. >> thank you so much, madison. it is a volunteer group community. it is community emergency response team and joining us coordinator. >> thank you. >> this is a big month for you. volunteers. tell us how it works. >> the group which volunteer as lot of things for the sheriff's office, primarily public safety and emergencies, but we conduct four trainings or academies each year to bring training to the general public. the idea, to make them as safe as we can. this training combines -- cores automatic risks and all hazards, and incorporates a great deal of safety and how to help other people and do safety effectively. we want people to be able to protect themselves, their

best they can. the training going to occur in january on the 21st, the 22 and 23rd and again, the other half of it will be the 28th, 29th and 30th. >> okay. >> it is six sessions, and we realize that is a time commitment, but we have a great deal of information to share. >> there are some of the dates there on the screen, too. just to give people an idea, what kind of background or experience do they need before this training? >> they absolutely need no prior skill sets. we will provide everything. the training free, and they'll go home with a manual that has all of the information that we provide so they can review it at their less your also. >> that is wonderful. >> absolutely. >> and so anyone is invited. if you want to help and get involved. tell us about some of the roles the team plays in the community. >> we, of course, respond in emergency situations. in our neighborhoods or with any responder agency that requires us, but in what i'd call peacetime and when it is

of public safety things. we help out at the air races, the balloon races, floods. things, sandbagging, barricade situation where is we need to watch out. we do 211 call center. we have our own call center many things. do. >> you're there. once someone goes through the training, what kind of time commitment is involved after that once they're a volunteer? >> first of all, there is no volunteer. however, i am always looking for good volunteers. and it is basically up to the individual. >> okay. >> it has -- have little or as much time as they have to spend, we'll take it. >> and thank you for coming in. you do great work. >> thank you. >> i hope you get a great turn out for the training. >> thank you. >> shelby, back to you. >> thank you, joe. think you love car ? one man loves cars on the big screen so much that he brings them to life.
