but we are bracing for even more snow tomorrow. >> it sure was a nice sight to see. it piled up in some areas. we check in with madison. she has our first look at the forecast tonight. madison? >> good evening, you guys. i do have a first look at it is slushy out there. it is still 36 degrees, so we're seeing rain showers in the remember offense area right now. of course, snow is still falling in some parts depending upon where you are and where the temperatures are dropping. so if you are traveling tonight, take it slow and be careful out there. we have going to see the temperatures drop and the roads get a little icy and slick out there. right now 36 degrees with light winds. on life doppler radar, we are seeing the showers through carson city, gardnerville, and we are going to continue to see that chance tonight. later on we'll see a break in expecting more. this winter weather advise visery which is in effect until 7:00 tonight, we're still expecting to see another two

the winter weather advisory is firing and this winter storm warning expiring at 10:00 for the sierra. that with this system, the next few hours, we still could see another two to four inches of snow and that will be west of highway 395 tonight. of course, we have another batch making its way in tomorrow. so the good news for the ski resorts. another big story is going to be the moderate air quality. that is going to continue to be the story until we can get some winds in here and push out the valley inversions. the good news is with how cold it is out there, it is okay to burn in the reno-sparks and washoe county area. on satellite and radar, we are watching that one system make its way out to be and tomorrow we're going to see another system make its way in. in your full forecast, we're going to take a look at the timing of this storm track and just how much snow we could see with tomorrow's storm. back to you guys. >> thank you so much. new tonight, president obama announced executive actions to curb gun violence. the president wipe aid way

young victims of the shootings of sandy hook elementary school violence. he assured the country and gun owners that his actions are not intended to take away everyone's guns or diminish their second amendment, but he listed other freedoms like those of wore' and assembly violence. president obama outryaned his actions starting with comp hebessive background checks regulating those who sell guns, hiring more people to process paper work, and making the system more efficient, making sure people with mental illness get help and developing new technologies to make guns safer. >> if we can set it up so you can't unlock your phone unless you have the right fingerprint, why cajtd we do -- can't we do the same thing for our gun ? if a child can't open a bottle of aspirin, we should make sure they can't pull a trig otherren a gun. all right? some people to buy guns at gun shows without any back ground checks. some say they're not sure if that is the, a and we bring you their take on the loophole and what they think this executive action will mean for their industry. >> reporter: he has been around guns all his life. >> fairly often, you know. probably every other weekend. >> reporter: he began shooting with his dad when he was 'or -- 3 or 4 years old. >> i'm now raising my sons the way i was raised. >> reporter: some guns he acquired from his dad or some he has purchased. >> i have them send the firearm to my dealer. >> reporter: that is a federal firearms licensed dealer. like josh who owns lone star handgun shooting range. because he is answer willed dealer, anyone who buys from him, must go through a background check, even if they buy from him at a gun show. but a loophole in the law alaws some sales at gun shows without a background check.

transactions between individuals don't require background checks. >> it is a small percentage, anywhere from 1% to 10%. >> reporter: he says those kinds of firearm purchases don't take place at gun shows very often. but after the attacks in paris and bern bern, the president hinted he make take executive action to tighten loopholes like this one. >> it is a question that is posed quite often. how do we stop the bad guys from getting guns? >> reporter: and he and other gun owner whose buy their firearms legally believe it won't matter. >> the criminals are still going to be criminals regardless of any background checks or anything that is put out there. >> they're going to find a way. >> reporter: well, in tonight's crime watch segment, a six-hour stand-off with a suspect ended peacefully. he surrendered around 1:00 today at a home just a few blocks from the elementary school. the officers say they removed three other people from the home on o. street about an earlier -- hour earlier. the lieutenant said shortly

7:00 this morning that he made statements about shooting at police officers. the police say he was armed with a handgun. authorities say he was also a suspect in a shooting that happened at the gold dust west casino in late december and a robbery of a reno store. two sun valley women are behind bars suspected of child neglect and animal cruelty. the washoe county sheriff officials say the 61-year-old kathleen dean and 41-year-old jolene dean were arrested saturday after a welfare check on careena circle. the deputies say they found hazardous living conditions for three children between the ages of 11 and 14. the children are currently in the care of washoe county child protective services. animal control officers reportedly found dozens of animals on the property raining from dogs and cats to birds and sugar gliders. the animals are being cared for by regional animal services. and reno police say two people are behind bars following an armed robbery at a gas station.

at the chevron station on the 10000 block of stead boulevard just after 2:00 this morning. they say one suspect is a 17- year-old and the other is 18- year-old christopher kern. the witnesses say the two suspects pointed a handgun at the cashier and demanded money and then ran away. a police officer saw them leaving and was able to take them into custody. a 20-year-old woman at the isn't of an end-of-life court battle has died a at reno hospital while on life support. the attorney david omara says she died monday at st. mary's regional medical center. she never woke up from anesthesia after abdom nat surgery on april 1. the cause of death appears to be respiratory failure. the hospital hasn't commented yet. her father lost a bid last week in court to delay brain wave tests that the hospital said would show she was brain dead and would not recover.

dayton high school is prompting an apology from the school district and its superintendent. news 4's terri hendry joins us with more on this tonight. parents were upset after seeing this image that was used in a writing assignment. >> reporter: that's right ujoe. many parents say they were outright offended. before we show you this picture or image, we have to warn you it is jarring. the image is actually a painting entitled a tale of two hoodies. the artist, he bills himself as one of the most controversial in the world. the image definitely evoked strong emotion. >> i think that is kind of offensive and thats the wrong light on the subject of what it is about. >> reporter: and parents were right to complain. >> i would be down at the school in a minute talking to the teacher. >> oh, i would have been one of the first ones that had gone to the school and complained about it, absolutely. >> reporter: the school superintendent wayne workman says he learned of the

>> it was actually part of a final examination, i believe it was meant to be a prompt for a writing assignment in a social studies class. >> reporter: workman describes the incident as a personnel issue and would not offer any specifics, but ask offering parents an apology. >> the first thing that we would want to say to the parents we hope that they would accept our sincerest apology for the offensive nature of the picture. >> reporter: workman says many view the image as offensive and and she agrees. >> and kkk with a gun in their hand shooting a kid with skittles not a good impression a child, i don't think. >> reporter: workman says he thinks the teacher was troy trying to provoke students in providing an argument of one side or the other for -- of a controversial subject. >> could have -- could that have been accomplished in a dinner manner and received the same result ? yeah, i think it has. >> reporter: workman says it is still under investigation and

issue, he won't say much else about the teach and what happens next. he describe this is as an anomaly. however, without giving any specifics, the district is working to make sure something like this never happens again. shelby? >> thank you. and the first major retailer in three decades may soon be coming to downtown reno. news 4's jammy hayden joins us live outside -- jaime hayden joins us live. there is information about who that retailer might be. >> reporter: yes, that is right. there is a lot of speculation and some of the rumors include that the retailer may be a clothing company or a home finishing company, but we don't know quite yet. details are not being released at this time. but we can tell you that it soon may be calling the first floor of the post office right behind me home. now, bernie carter, a midtown and downtown reno developer, tells news 4 he signed a letter of intent to lease the first floor of the former post office

now, part of the letter of intent includes a non- disclosure agreement which does prevent him from confirming the name of that chain. we're told the entire building is several thousand square feet, and yesterday actually a market place called the basement, which crus a variety of locally owned shops, opened underneath the first floor, so there's about eight businesses opened underneath there right now. and the lead designer of the building says the national retailer which hasn't been named yet is huge for this area. >> we have tried to slowly release information and keep that secret, almost like a speak easy is the vibe. there is one door to get into the entire place right now. we want to spoon feed the excitement because it is going to be a game changer for reno. >> reporter: now, this post office was built in the 1930s and has ton of history, so officials say even if a retailer does come inside here, much of the building will stay the same. now, the announcement of who

expected to welcome back, everyone. anti-government activists say they'll leave an oregon wild life rev use when the government starts giving land back to ranchers. they had broad plans granting land to the federal government. the group's original goal was to keep two local ranchers out of prison for their roles in the burning of federal land. now, bundy says he and fellow protestors want to restrict the federal government's reach over wild lands. >> there is no place for intimidation and fear in a community, that it should not be allowed, and that if government is being -- that fear and intimidation, that it balanced. >> amon bobbedy is is son of cliveen bundy, a nevada rancher who had a stand-off with federal authorities over

coming up in about 30 minutes at 6:00, bundy is responding to allegations of hypocrisy. records show he borrowed more than half a million dollars from a federal loan program in 2010. we'll hear his response coming up tonight at 6:00. jo well, talk radio host and former chairman of the washoe county democratic party has announced his candidacy for a nevada congressional seat. this morning chip evans formally announced his plans to challenge the second district republican. and he is a former high-tech executive in silicon valley who went bankrupt during the 2008 financial crises. he now hosts the chip evans show in reno a democrat has never held the district 2 seat. it is a largely rural district covering more than half of nevada. >> and i'm going to run as a democrat in this election, but at the end of the day i consider myself a member of the ticked off party. that is a big group of people that are just plain sad that

i want to go back and try to fix that. >> evans says he knows his campaign will be an uphill battle, but he wants to be a voice for nevada's working- class families. joe? shelby, tonight we're taking a look at chair lift safety after a ski lift chair fell from its cable this weekend at heavenly mountain resort. it was an empty chair lift. it happened sunday morning of the north bowl chair lift. fortunately no one was hurt. all 65 guests were evacuated from that lift. and before the lifts are used, they require inspections twice a year to see if they meet safety requirements. it does not matter how old the lift is as long as it passions those inspections. the owners do not have to replace them, but locals are still expressing their concerns about aural of this. >> yeah, i usual usually get scared because i'm not really good with heights. knowing that it could fall doesn't make me feel too secure. >> and when someone is not convenient on it. imagine when there is a weight

>> but i do bring the bar down now. >> heavenly officials did not want to speak with us about the matter, but the officials did apologize. they tell us they are working on the problem. all right a lot of snow for sure up in the mountains as we saw in that video. let's check in with madison and get an update on the latest storm. >> good evening. right now in reno we're sitting at 36 degrees so we are seeing some rain showers across the area, but as those temperatures drop, we're going to see slick and icy roads and then a mix of snow and rain as the evening guess on. the winds now light out of the west at about three miles per hour. and taking a look at our official day time high, 38 degrees today. below average. the morning low, slightly above average at 27 degrees this morning. so we're starting to get close to where we should be. we do have a very cold week ahead of us. i'll show you that on your seven-day forecast. live doppler radar in the last hour still showing rine and snow along the sierra and then, of course, spilling over into far western nevada tonight. we are going to continue to see the showers throughout the evening. we could see up to two more

tonight and the next couple of hours for the reno area and really part -- all of far western nevada. that winter weather advisory does exmire at 7:00 and then this winter storm warning will remain in effect until 10:00 tonight. we could see anywhere from two to four inches of more snow accumulation, west of highway 395 tonight. some places like north star already recorded 10 inches today, but we could see an additional four inches overnight tonight. a second system makes its way in tomorrow. here is a look around the area. we have dropped to the freezing mark for south lake tahoe. still sitting in the lower 40s as this low pressure system pushes across california and nevada and then another system, as i administrationed, -- mentioned, moving into tomorrow. let's put your future cast into motion. we're really going to see cloud cover in far western nevada with snow still hitting the sierra, but by 5:00, things are really clearing out for the area, and boom.

the care and rainfall. scattered showers tomorrow afternoon and evening as we saw today. tonight we do still have a chance to see the snow showers dropping down to 26 degrees and light winds across the region. tomorrow we're looking to top out at 35 degrees a and then is that same story, the snow showers possible throughout the day. heading over to eastern nevada, we're going to see day time highs in the mid 30s with a chance of snow and light winds the 20s. as we head west, tonight down to 22 degrees and topping out in the upper 30s tomorrow so anything that we see there will be a mix of rain and snow lough the day with that warmer day time high there. in carson city, 23 degrees tonight and up to 36 degrees tomorrow with another chance for snow and light winds, and then around the lake, much cooler day time highs, right around or below take freezing mark. so tomorrow we could see another two to four inches of snow with winds there out of the south at five to 10 miles per hour. now, day time highs and overnight lows across the region really sticking around

it into the mid 30s tomorrow that is really the stir across much of the area. a few places dropping down into the teens, but no single digits. 24 degrees and then topping out at 34 degrees there tomorrow. on your extended forecast, you can see that we do have a storm system kind of lingering through the weekend. for reno and carson city, we have a break on friday, but the showers are going to stick around through south lake tahoe. here is a look at your extended forecast. a cold week with day time highs in the 30s until we hit 40 degrees next tuesday. as you can see, we have a chance for showers the weekend and then again by next tuesday. tomorrow, definitely going to see that snow in the area and the sierra will have travel impasse there and then the most amount of snow is expected to fall between noon and 8:00. all right. thank you, madison. and straight ahead, an thlete who has been in a lot of recent headlines has been doing something a little out of character hosting "saturday night live."
