41 year old "joleen dean" were arrested saturday after a welfare check on corina circle. deputies say they found hazardous living conditions for three children between 11 and 14 years old. the children are currently in the care of washoe county child protective services. animal control officers reportedly found dozens of animals on the property... ranging from dogs and cats, to birds and sugar gliders.. which are a kind of small possum.the animals are being cared for by regional animal services. 3 (samantha)>> in more local news... a controversial writing assignment at dayton high school is prompting an apology from school officials. before we show you an image used in the assignment, we have to warn you, it is jarring. this picture is actually a painting entitled; "a tale of two hoodies." the artist bills himself as one of the most controversial in the world. it definitely evoked strong emotion from parents who complained it is offensive, sends the wrong message and is inappropriate for high school students. lyon county school superintendent wayne workman says he learned about

event at heavenly mountain resort where one of their chairs on their lift fell down.... it now has people worried.madison perotti -- skiier"yeah i mean i usually get scared cause i'm not very good with heights but knowing that i could fall doesn't make me feel too secure."heavenly expressed its apology in a statement saying....quote.... "heavenly has suspended all operations for the north bowl chairlift. heavenly's lift maintenance team will complete a thorough investigation into the cause of the chair's fall." kodi brown -- snowboarder "cause if that could happen when someone's not even on it imagine when there's the weight of people on it so.."so what are the safety regulations when it comes to ski lift operations?officials at the california division of occupational safety and health... shared the facts: first off... all ski lifts are inspected twice a year.... second... it does not matter how old the lift is.... if it passes the safety checks... owners are not required to replace them.third... maufacturers do have required maintenance schedules... and the california labor code allows for an injunction through the court to stop operations if need be.if a

announced his plans to challenge 2nd district republican mark amodei. evans is a former high-tech executive in silicon valley. that seat has never been held by a democrat. 3 ((you know i'm gonna run as a democrat in this election. but at the end of the day i consider myself a member of the "ticked off" party, it's a big group of people that's just plan sad. washington's so dysfunctional, i wanna go back and try to fix that.)) 3 (bill)>> evans says he knows his campaign will be an uphill battle but he wants to be a voice for nevada's working class families. 3 (samantha)>> and speaking of politics.. the nevada democratic party hopes to increase turnout and make the caucus process easier with a new online pre-registration tool. so this week.. the party is unveiling "caucus express". democrats who pre-register on the mobile site will get details about their caucus location and can opt for text-message caucus updates. the tool's aim is to teach voters how to participate in a caucus, which is often more time-consuming and unfamiliar than casting a ballot in a primary or general

3 (samantha)3 >> >> now to an "on your side" report.. if you're getting phone calls, asking for a donation to help a firefighters burn fund, beware. the reno firefighters association says it may be a fake phone solicitation. the calls -coming from 775 area code numbers - started in december and continue to make its rounds. the caller claims to be with the "associated firefighters burn fund."the reno firefighters association says the caller is not linked with any fire agency in the state. the local association does not conduct any telephone solicitations. rather, it hosts public charity events. it also only supports vetted burn funds and foundations, such as the international association of fire fighters, and firefighters burn institute.the association recommends asking the caller two big questions. 3 (( several of our firefighters have been contacted by this organization and one of the things they ask is what is

like, well, we don't have any snow on the ground. >> good morning to you. you can see on the live camera, a little bit of that fog off in the distance. it is a situation where fog settles in the valley so that particular skycam happens to be just above the valley floor and looking down, you can see the fog in the distance. we are dealing with an icy situation as a result. the fog is liquid droplets in the air. once it settles on and attaches to the ground and other surfaces, it freezing instantly. freezing fog advisory remains in place right up until 9:00 a.m. once we get the sun to rise -- once the sun does rise, we don't get it to rise, but once the sun rises woman see the chance for the freezing fog

the roads will warm up and they will be wet rather than icy. before a little bit of drying. maybe some of that fog is starting to dissipate. if you are out and about across the area, you could run into some of that fog and some of that ice so please take it easy. 20s and 30s across the area. coldldnough to support the ice on the roads which is what we are seeing out there. zooming in on we were nevada in the sierra. it is below freezing for pretty much everyone. that is a dangerous situation. that and we have more moisture on the way. it is falling as rain over in the bay area. starting to make its way towards the central valley of california. that means we should start to see the flakes fly in the mountains. there have been several crashes throughout the night and into this morning. check out this video shot a couple of hours ago by a

good news t does look like the fog is clearing out a little bit. so far, we've only seen two cargo planes take off as the fog has started to go away over the past two and a half hours or so. we have not seen any airlines take off or come in so far this morning as flights are being delayed and canceled. we are over here outside of the b gates typically where the southwest planes take off. we are not even seeing any planes this morning. the biggest advice for anyone heading over to the airport, make sure to check to your airline. people are seeing delays not only as long as five hours but even seven hours long. so again, just make sure you check specifically with your airline. now, with did speak to some people and here is how they said they will be killing their time while they wait for flights. >> i've got a lot of e-mails. if my boss is listening to, i do want to say i'm going to be working hard at the restaurant and bar.

behind bars suspected of child neglect appear animal cruelty. washoe county sheriff's officials say kathleen dean and jole nevment dean were arrested saturday after a welfare check. deputies say they found hazardous living conditions for three children between 11 and 14 years old. the children are currently in the care of washoe county child protective services. animal control officers also reportedly found dozens of animals on the property ranging from dogs and cats to birds and other animals. the animals are being cared for now by regional animal services. if you are getting phone calls asking for a donation to help a firefighter's burn fund, beware. the reno firefighters association say it may be a fake phone solicitation. they are not making it. the call is coming from 775 area code numbers started in september. they continue to make the rounds. they claim to be with the associated firefighters burn fund. the call are is not linked with any fire agency in the state.

30 years may soon be coming to downtown reno. there was a letter of intent signed to lease the first floor of the former post office building to i national retail chain. part of the letter of intent includes aen in disclosure agreement which prevents him from confirming the name of of the chain. however, there are a few rumors swirling around that the major retailer is either a clothing company or a home furnishings companies. we are told the entire building is several thousand square feet and the lead designer of the post office says the major retail are is huge for this area and this part of town specifically. an official announcement is expected to be made soon on who the major retailer is and yesterday, a marketplace called the basement opened underneath the first floor of the former post office. it includes a variety of locally owned shops. many of us, new year's means it is time to work off the holiday weight. the gym can be the last place

are to see what we have in store for the rest of the day. >> good morning to you. we do have the rice -- the ice on the roadways not only from the snow as you mentioned but we've had fog develop overnight. as you are out and about, you may run into some of that fog and that is liquid in the air but it is solid ice on the ground. once it touches the ground, it attaches to the ground and it feess. that is what is causing kind after dangerous situation out there for driving. please take it easy. freezing fog advisory remains in place for the areas shaded in this blue-green color through about the 9:00 a.m. hour. once the sun comes up, it will start to warm up a little bit out there and we'll start to see an improvement as far as the fog is concerned. even if the fog dissipates, it still is leaving behind some ice on the roads from where it was in place so do take it easy on the roads this morning or delay your commute if you can. high relative humidity means a good chance for fog so the closer you are to 100% humidity, which some of us are in the 90s right now, that means we are looking at that

>> good morning to you. a tough commute. if you can delay your commute, i would suggest trying that. it is definitely tough on the roads inform you have to leave now, take it slow, take it easy. be very careful. while we had rain and snow yesterday across parts of the area and also fog developed overnight for some of us, and that is leading to ice on many area rod ways. we had freezing fog out there this were nothing t look like the fog is trying to dissipate for some areas and that is a good sign but keep in mind the fog already put ice on the roads so there is definitely a tough go out there this morning. see air snow arriving for the day today too. it is starting to make its arrival over the next hour or two up into the high are elevations coming in from the west. it looks drier as far as western nevada is concerned this. particular wave of moisture looks like it will shadow out quite a bit for western nevada. so i think less of a chance for accumulating snow but there could be a few snow showers that make it over the mountains. 26 in town right now.
