roads clear as we've been hit with one storm after another, n-dot watches weather conditions very closely and they have different procedures for wet and warm winter storms that produce rain and snow versus cold only snow events. they use sensors on the roads that give them real time weather data as well as temperature sensors on the snow plows themselves. the plows track road temperatures as well as air temperatures. 3 ((spraying anti-icing liquids, it does, it's like a bond breaker. you put it there prior to the snow pack developing and what ends up happening is the end of the storm, ndot can drop the plows and peel off the snowpack much quicker, getting a safer condition to the public. )) 3 (bill)>> even though we are currently getting a little break from all the storms... as tim said... be ready for another system to move in this weekend. 3 (samantha)>> and speaking of the roads.. the reno police traffic division is the first in the state to use new technology that will

tim, there are scattered areas with fog. >> yes, there are. truckee is reporting fog. carson city as well. some areas are still seeing fog and it is that situation where it could be putting ice on the roadways. that is a dangerous situation you want to be careful of. here in reno near the station we're dry so that is a big improvement. roads have been dry for my commute, your commute. sounds like things have been better. 39 in reno-sparks. the high later today. not much of a snow shower chance. today is our break, but another system moves in tonight into tomorrow morning. that one brings again snow, once again to the sierra. a moderate accumulation possible 6 to 12 for the highest elevations and less than that if you get down. chain controls may be required tonight. we'll have to watch for that in the sierra.

>> good morning to you guys. like tim said we're getting a small break from the weather here this morning. we're crash and incident free. the area around tahoe we want to warn you about west of carson city where highway 50 and highway 28 meet up. we're getting reports of it being slick in that area so be careful. another quick reminder if you're trifling down the highway and you see an emergency vehicle on the shoulder, move over a lane and give them some space. this is for all emergency vehicles whether police and fire, dot cleaning up the highways and making them safe. you have to slow down and move over. this is a law in all 50 u.s. states. seat belts on, cell phones off. stay safe. they have been working to keep our roads clear. they watch weather conditions closely and they have different

winter storms that produce rain and snow only event. the censors on the roads give them real-time weather data and temperature censors on the snowplows themselves. the plow trucks read temperatures as well as air temperatures. spraying anti-icing liquids is like a bond breaker. you put it on before the snow develops and at the end of the storm, we can drop the snowplows and peel off the snow pack quicker and giving a safer condition to the public. we'll see a break for the next 24 hours. be sure for another system to move in this weekend. we'll check in with tim after the break. >> well mavericks have always been a popular spot for surfers but yesterday they tested their skills and how high the waves got.

and [applause] and you're looking at the opening bell on wall street. it has been a very rough week. starting out on a better note this morning we're dropping quite a bit from the morning session highs. we were up 100 points at 6:30 and since dropped down by 46 on the dow. nasdaq up 39 points. whole sale stockpiles. labor department is reporting that u.s. employers added 292,000 jobs in december and unemployment remained at 5%. today's job report is

towns we're seeing fog still at this point. 20s and 30s for temperatures across the state. some lower temperatures too. south lake in the single digits so it is colder in other spots not on the map. a couple snow showers in northeastern nevada. the most of the rest of us are dry. it will remain that way for many of us through the day today. any snow showers would be extremely isolated today. the bigger chance comes tonight as moisture arrives during the overnight period. here is 3:00 a.m.. snow starting to fall in the sierra during the late evening and continuing into tomorrow morning and every once in awhile once again spilling into parts of western nevada. as far as the accumulations we're looking to 0 to 1 for western valleys. foothills and parts of carson city and douglas city 1 to 3 with some heavier snow showers. lake level 3 to 6. this is

period into tomorrow. 6 to 12 at the crest of the sierra. we're not looking for a large amount of snow here, but a moderate size system. light winds and mostly cloudy skies today. not much in the way of snow showers for most of us, mainly a dry day. tonight into tomorrow morning, snow arrives for the sierra and continues into tomorrow morning. starts to break apart in the late afternoon tomorrow and a drier day on your sunday. then we're unsettled heading into next week with snow showers returning. watch out for slick spots on the roads especially in the mornings. well, some brave surfers road huge waves yesterday at mavericks one of the most dangerous and notorious surf spots in the country. a high surf advisory didn't stop crowds at the famous beach

some used jetskis to reach the swells. a high surf advisory remains in effect this morning. back to you. in international news, south korea has message about the d mz. the heavy stretch separates them. ten loud speakers are giving the messages, a response to the hydrogen bomb test they claim was conducted on wednesday. meanwhile, paris' prosecutor casts new doubt on the identity of a man shot by police the day before. the man was killed as he tried to enter a police station wielding a meat cleaver yesterday. an official account said he said god is great in arabic and he had a fake suicide belt.

anniversary of the deadly islamic attacks. he said while the man was known by police who detained him in the south of france months ago, information about higgs identity was contradictory to the police report and a manuscript found on his person after he was killed. a police officer was shot several times in a shootout with a suspect before midnight. the 33-year-old officer was driving through a west philly intersection when the suspect opened fire. he walked up to the police car and fired at least 13 times. the officer was hit 3 times in his left arm and is expected to make a recovery. the 30-year-old man was shot at least three times. he has been taken into custody. no word on his condition right now. well, today marks five years since a deadly shooting spree in tucson, arizona left gabrielle giffords injured and six others dead.

year-old girl and chief judge in arizona. 18 people were injured in the attack. gabrielle giffords was speaking at a congress on the corner event at a grocery store when 22-year-old jared lee loughner opened fire. they believe she was the target of the attack. he spent months learning to walk and speak again. he is serving a life sentence. a plane headed to chicago from new york city made an emergency landing in detroit last evening when a passenger became abusive and unruly prompting authorities to get her off the plane. a passenger wanted to remain anonymous shows the moment she was carried off the plane. passengers were applauded as she was taken off the plane. that woman became disruptive shortly after takeoff and assaulted several passengers. police say the woman may have been suffering from a medical condition. after the unplanned stop, the flight resumed its trip to o'hare airport.
