news 4 at 5 starts now. good evening. think of returning as for news 4 at 5. here is a live look at at protests happening on the bay bridge night -- right now. is the black lives matter protest of the recent police shooting. slowly after being completely shut down as of about 4 pm. several photos have been posted online of protesters chained to cars that were stopped on the bridge. a pretty chaotic scene there. no word if this is tied to the martin luther king holiday. protesters have said we are protesting recent police shootings across the country. at home new information on a missing skier. search and rescue crews have been looking for 22-year-old, carson may since last friday. terri hendry has more on the search and the challenges that

many challenges and more still to come. >> reporter: that is true. this is all unfolding at the sugar bowl ski resort. the weather has not been cooperating. the threat of more avalanches is hampering the search efforts. carson may disappeared last thursday. they say he was last seen skiing while off duty that afternoon. his friends reported him missing on friday morning. his belongings were found still inside his locker at the resort. >> we are in day four of the search. day five of our missing person. >> reporter: since friday, sergeant hunt said they have been focusing on an area north of the amount due to lift. >> we are doing a search on the trees were carson would normally ski. >> reporter: he said there are 42 searchers on the ground and the search is also being done by air. because of dangerous avalanche conditions on the mountains. >> it is high and it is concerning. we will not putout have -- researchers in an avalanche

>> reporter: over the weekend, the weather hampered the efforts. there is now rain in the forecast witch hunt said would help their efforts but not if it is followed by snow. >> rain can help us out to stabilize the pack. if you get snow on top of that it will un-stabilize that. >> reporter: there looking in an area where hunt said they've picked up a few pings from maize cell phone. the signals have stopped. he is quick to point out this is still a rescue effort and they are hoping that because me is an experienced skier, he is still alive and waiting to be found. we are keeping our fingers crossed, hoping for the best. because of the threat of an avalanche that is high, out in the outbound areas around the ski resorts and the backcountry, the experts from the sierra avalanche center recommended the following. where an avalanche beacon. carry a shovel and a probe. you get training before venturing out into these areas.

king junior. jamie haden joins us in the studio with a look at how locals took advantage of this free day. >> reporter: many businesses and schools were closed today in honor of martin luther king junior. instead of people having a relaxing day off, hundreds gave it back to others. dozens of university of nevada students gave up their last day of winter break to help at dish out at various organizations. more than 80 students volunteered to be. some help pack boxes for families and others worked with children for the day. students said they would not have picked any other way to spend their final debut for the spring semester starts. >> it's a big thing to be here. people are saying they need to be ready for class or go shopping. i would rather be here. it meant a lot to me to give back. >> reporter: another mlk event that took place today in honor of my luther king date was at the memorial park this morning. dozens of students from the tahoe expedition academy teamed up with the truckee meadows

they concluded what's called a bioblitz which logs all living things at the park as part of an annual project. organizers say it helps the community better understand what plans, animals and insects live in the animal and other populations are changing. students who volunteer say they enjoy giving back to a leader who gave so much. >> because martin luther king really did help out our society as we know it today. set of taking a day off we are doing work. >> reporter: coming up at six, we will show you woodwinds 300 people did at the food bank of northern nevada. in reno church is joining in a growing movement among places of worship offering sanctuary to immigrants living in the u.s. illegally. the unitarian universalist fellowship of northern nevada became the first church in the state earlier this month to allow an immigrant to stay there. the church has converted space in the back to a sanctuary room with a cot, blankets and towels. reverand anderson said he does

breaking the law but rather upholding his congregation's values. >> the bill for holding a four- day special legislative session last month to lure carmaker, 30 future to nevada is larger than one to clear tax breaks for tesla. costs so far have amounted to $227,000 for that session. officials expect the total to be around $250,000 when printing costs and all travel reimbursements are paid for lawmakers. the session cost nearly twice as much as a two-day special session in 2014 for tesla. the recent session lasted longer even though faraday's incentive package was smaller. concerns about water use and bond financing drew out the session longer than expected. it is crunch time on the campaign trail as the iowa caucuses meal.

this is better than last year. 46 is the average for this time of year. 54 was the high today. it was nice once we got the sun is going. we are now at 48 with partly cloudy skies. other numbers just registering in the mid and upper 40s except for south lake tahoe at 35 and truckee coming in at 37. here is our next to system. it will arrive around 10 pm or 11 pm with light rain. future clouds and radar has it mapped out for you. from now through wednesday morning. if you had through noon or 1 pm we will have of rain stretching east of us. not the whole state with the the rain but we will. i do not think we will see snow. snow on the sierra side especially in turkey. backs off by 6 pm. then it is gone. overall, this will not be a prolonged event. it will turn wet again.

highs tomorrow around 40 or 42 degrees. these numbers are a little above average for this time of year. the rain chances are good. there are just -- we're not expecting a lot of rain. more highs for you. overnight lows in the 30s. highs in the 40s. the seven-day numbers are on and off wet until the weekend. then we will try things out. tomorrow's rainfall chance in carson city is 70%. about the same for south lake tahoe except it will be snow. into the weekend, the rain chances disappear for carson city on saturday but the snow chances remain for south lake tahoe friday, saturday, and a sunday. what about our area? reno, sparks, looks pretty good. i love these rainfall chances every day because we need it. it is not causing too many headaches. the only problem will be the

chemotherapy. by her side, a doll that looks just like her. >> i think it's amazing. >> reporter: this adult did not come from friends or family. it was the work of complete strangers. >> she's being thought of for special things and -- gives back a little bit of a childhood she is missing. >> reporter: getting the dolls to the patient's started with a simple post on social media. >> this is melissa hand dean who works for a local cancer organization. she had a coworker started a personal gofundme page to raise money for the dolls. >> i had no idea that in 24 hours we put the story out there , we raised to $2500 which was more than double our goal. >> reporter: then american girl heard about the efforts on social media and donated five dolls. the money raised by melissa will go toward marginals in the future. >> this is a special way to make the journey a little is your. >> reporter: when elsa goes into remission, she will be able to take her doll to american girl and they got in
