at this point we can't go back. we can't put the searchers in that kind of danger. carson may tonight, we go live to sugar bowl ski resort where we have been tracking the search effort all day. and a new mode of transportation will now be operating a the reno-tahoe international airport. plus, the gas prices continue to drop, but how long will we see these low prices? we spoke with the experts to get some answers. news 4 at 5:00 starts right now . good evening, everyone. thank you for joining us tonight. i'm joe hart. >> and i'm shelby sheehan. the search for a missing skier at sugar bowl has been suspended. we're live with the efforts

for the search and rescue crews. >> reporter: the sheriff's office made the determination to suspend the search a little sooner than we had anticipated. you can see the weather here is dismal, that is the reason why, and it has been deteriorating all day making it a real challenge for the search -- challenge for the search and rescue crews. the 23-year-old carson may disappeared while skiing on his day off last thursday. the ski instructor was reported missing on friday, 24 hours later. about 40 search and rescue team high winds. while they had hoped rain would lessen the avalanche risk, the makes -- mix of high winds along with more snow has made it more dangerous for rescue workers. >> you have to realize when we have the snow and the ice and the rain, this is the worst scenario that we could come up with when it comes to a lost

dave hunt says there is an area where they were able to pick up a ping from may's cell phone last friday, but have not been able to reach that area because of the risk of avalanche. >> it is unfortunate. we'd certainly like to get in there, but at this point we can't go back there. our searchers, we can't put them in that kind of danger. >> reporter: yesterday they had help from the sky. >> the california national guard was finally able to make it up. they searched the back country for us. they checked anywhere there be out there. maybe carson was hiking around, but they found no clues whatsoever. >> reporter: at this point they hoped may had hunkered down in a snow kay, but the hopes began to fade after the air searches reveal nod cry -- revealed no clues. >> you'd start putting tracks haven't found that. >> reporter: well, this case

persons case. and what that means that they'll continue to search, but the resources will be vastly scaled back. sergeant hunt told me that for the last 25 years, this is the first time that they've but this many resources on a mountain and have not been able to find someone. our hearts and our prayers go out to the family tonight. we wish them the best. i know it is a very tough time for them and a very sad day on the mountain tonight. reporting live from sugar bowl ski resort, i will send it back to you. >> thank you so much. the conditions have been challenging up there. we check in now with chief meteorologist coul inn jackson. the weather is expected to clear up anytime soon or more wet stuff ton way? we're taking a break starting tonight into tomorrow and thursday, most of friday, but friday evening, we'll see a return to rain and snow. for now, the storms are quiet. it was interesting this morning where we had the rain and the wind picked up and that is over with.

scattered showers on the western side, but they will be more returning once we get into, again, friday afternoon, in the tahoe area, and in our area in the evening. we're still at 50 degrees. above average. and even on the eastern side, things are nice. low 50s. year. so air quality, get ready. it is nice, and that is always the seven-day forecast has a and snow. what an interesting season it has been, and it continues. guys, back to you. >> thank you so much. starting tomorrow, ride sharing companies like uber and lift will be able to pick up passengers a at the reno-tahoe international airport. that's where we are live with all of the details tonight. >> reporter: well, shelby, ride sharing companies like uber and lift have been officially operating in reno and sparks since about september. so since then they have been offering rides around town and

the airport. however, they weren't allowed to pick up passengers at the airport. however, today airport officials say that will soon change. they say that transportation network companies as they're called have worked out agreements for operating permits to start picking up at the airport starting tomorrow. so the ride sharing drivers will have to meet the same guidelines as taxi cab drivers and they have to meet the same -- they have to have the same type of technological equipment that would track drivers when they come within a certain number of feet of the airport, so each individual driver will have to have a permit from the airport to pick up here. now, the ride sharing pick-up location will be north of the baggage claim area, just several yards away from where the taxi pick-up area is right now. the officials from the airport say uber will host a press conference tomorrow starting at 10:00 a.m., and that is sort of a way to celebrate the ceo mora

excuse me, al ofy and wolf yea, they will be the first passengers to -- will be the first passengers to pick up and at the airport. reporting live at the tahoe regional -- excuse me. i am all over the place today! reporting live at the tahoe- reno tahoe international airport. news 4. thank you. >> we all have those days. thank you for the update there. the democrats are revving up their fundraising efforts as they try to regain control of the nevada legislature. the fundraising reports due last week shows the state democratic party raised nearly twice what the state republican party did in 2015. a conservative red wave in the 2014 election left the democrats with a 17-25 minority in the assembly after years of controlling the agenda as the majority party. the democrats are also outnumbered 10-11 in the senate.

looking to tighten gun laws under proposed legislation in the state assembly. people would only be able to buy one riffle or shotgun each month. it would be the same limit currently for handguns. it responds to a trend of californians purchasing more long guns than handguns over the past decade. advocates say it makes no sense that anyone can buy as many rifles or shotguns as they want at any time. the bill follows the deadly terror attack in san bernardino last month. and continuing our coverage now, on a national level, the voters will have a clear choice on the issue of gun control in the upcoming pri mir and caucus season. our national correspondent has a breakdown of the top candidates and where they stand on our second amendment right. >> reporter: two weeks before the primary and caucus condition, gop candidates are on the attack, on the explosive issue of gun control. >> and this president, if he could get rid of the second amendment, he would. >> you know, the guns don't pull the trigger.

>> there is the reason that the gun owners of america have endorsed me in this race. >> reporter: enough are already in place to keep the guns out of the hands of the criminals and the focus should be on mental health programs, all fully support the second amendment. >> in any republican primary, everyone is going to say they support the second amendment, unless you are clinically insane. >> reporter: donald trump heard that message loud and clear. trump, the mogul in his book "the america we deserve" used to support longer background checks for firearms. now trump, the gop presidential candidate, has gone to the right. >> and every republican candidate is trying to come out with even a more extreme position on gun rights than the other. >> reporter: the top democratic presidential candidates favor some sort of gun legislation with very few differences. >> it is time to pick a side. either we stand with the gun lobbies or we join the president and stand up to them. >> reporter: hillary clinton wants the make universal background checks the law of

makers liable in certain crimes. just days ago senator bernie sanders reversed himself from a law he favored giving immunity to gun makers to rescinding portions of that law. >> i am pleased to hear that senator sanders has reversed his position on immunity. >> reporter: senator bernie sanders still says that the gun control should fall to the individual states, but he does support president obama's order on gun control saying they have little interest in doing anything about gun safety. reporting live from washington. the former republican vice presidential nominee sarah palin will publicly endorse donald trump on tuesday evening, tonight. nbc news confirms the endorsement which the trump campaign later announced in the e-mail statement. the pair are expected to appear together tonight. pal sin a tea party favorite and her support could boost trump's support among

we'll show you a few gas prices continue to drop nationwide, but how long can we expect for this trend to last? news 4's jaime hayden checked with some experts.

we need some good news with the gas prices, for sure. >> reporter: we can expect to pay just a little bit less a the pump for at least another couple of months. the nevada petroleum marketers and convenience store association expects gas to drop at least a dime within the next 10 days. he says it all denneds on the price of crude oil, supply and a few other factors. krueger also says it is hard to predict how long it will stay in that range, but he has an idea. >> and unless there is some like major market ins influence, that supply dried up or there was some international incident, probably we're talking early spring, which to me means march, we could see these prices go for another, say, 60 days is what i'm being told. so, for example, according to gas buddy, the cheapest gas in reno is $2.29 per gallon at cosco now. so according to krueger, within

could go down to $2.17 a gallon at cosco and stay in that range until march. and the gas prices vary in every county, so if you're trying to figure out how much you can pay, just subtract 12- cents now a gallon and you can expect that price in the next 10 days and to last for about two months. joe? and we will enjoy it, thank you. time to get a full check on the forecast. our new chief meteorologist, colin jackson, his second day at the station. doing great over there, colin? >> panicky the first day. oh, boy. and you know what? i'm still using my gps to get around town and i keep talking about things i love about reno. no mat whatever i put in there, everything is 11 minutes away. it really works out great. i love it. the rain showers are over for tonight and a couple of days. the high today was great. 56, 46 is the average. so that is nice. look at the average low historically going back 30

37 was the low so that is not too bad. and the highs today were great. mid to upper 50s where we are and not bad in the eastern section of the state. of course, it is always colder. and in sacramento, they got to a high of 60 today. so winter is not over. we're kind of just getting started. the number of storms that have been coming through, an el nino pattern. not that cold and trucking straight across the pacific. there will be some changes in colder storms coming, but that is not for a couple of weeks. >> 50 now at 5:00. i just looked at the clock. and you know what? we still have the wind west at 13 miles per hour. other numbers, we're still in the upper 40s to 50 degrees. fallin, you guys are still coming in at 51, which is okay. current numbers around the area to the east, it is okay as well. the temperatures in the mid and upper 40s all over the place. and not bad overall. we're still warm. the sun has been down for a few minutes and the winds are still gusting.

sustained winds at 15. you'll notice that. that will give you a bit of a wind chill as you head out. overall our satellite pat certain quieting down. we still have residual light showers, but that is all coming to an end. this is the scene for future clouds and radar starting around 4:00 or 5:00. it all dissipates. the next two days we'll have passing clouds. and then it is over with. but take a look at what is coming. our next storm, every couple of days, one blows in. thursday evening, i-5 west all the way to the coast, there will be rain and snow starts to pile up at tahoe again. here is the scene by friday at 5:00 in the morning. so be prepared for more travel troubles friday night into saturday. if you have plans to go over the crest on friday, be prepared. you could be delayed. 32 is our scheduled overnight low. high tomorrow, 52 and a sky that looks like that. partly loud chitty to sunny. it will be gorgeous.

so overnight lows tonight, take a look. of them. you know where you live. mid teens to upper 20s. this is in the east and the southeast and elko where a high of 36 can be expected tomorrow. the rine and snow take as break. we'll have partly loudy skies. overall our pattern is terps still remaining a little above average here. and then where we are, more close to town, temperatures will be in the low 50s to upper 40s, and that's not bad at all. seven-day number time. carson city first, we'll get you to the low 50s over the next three days. cooler air moves in on sat and sunday. highs in the mid 40s. a healthy chance of rain on friday. tahoe, the snow comes in, and it is a 100% chance of that, a skier's delight. there is yosemite. what a gorgeous picture hoar and here are the numbers for sparks-reno. saturday, 80% early. overall, the weekend will be much cooler, guys. mid 40s for highs.
