4:11 pm
>> so the open enrollment is open now and it goes for a couple of month ? >> yes. and one of the benefits of enrolling now, there's two plans. there is the 529 college savings program and then the prepaid tuition program. they differ slightly. prepaid tuition is tomorrow's tuition at today's prices. and -- >> so you're locking whatever today's price is, even if your child won't be in college for another 10 years? pgh. >> exactly. to show you how powerful that is, our number one citizen, governor sandoval, took out a prepaid tuition program for $6,000 in 1998. we're now paying $23,000, 24,000 in tuition for his kids. >> wow. >> the university system here is going increase tuition 4% a year that is guaranteed. and if you look at overall tuition has increased by about 80% over the last several years. >> and sometimes there's a little bit of confusion. what if people say i don't know
4:12 pm
school here in nevada. what would you say to them? >> i'd say no worries because we will pay for out-of-state tuition. so, in other words, if your son or daughter gets into harvard or m.i.t. or stanford, we will pay -- >> you're going to be needing this help. >> and we will pay the university of nevada equivalent to the student. >> to put that towards their tuition. >> right, right. >> should they decide not to go, for whatever reason they follow a different career path, the -- you will be refunded the money less $100ed a min stray five fee. so it is almost a no lose situation. >> right, right. >> how is the 529 different from the prepaid tuition program? >> both of them, their one big advantage is as you're -- your savings grow, when your kids get to college, you get to take it out fax free. the difference is for the prepaid tuition, it is reallyly like a contract. it is an insurance policy.
4:13 pm
it, should you decide that your son or daughter's first cousin can't use it, you will get your principal back, the money you put in, but you won't get the increase in savings. where as with the 529 programs, you bear the onus of investing, but you, -- again, you take the money out with all of your gain. so there are two different programs. >> dan schwartz, thank you for coming in. >> let me mention. >> go ahead. >> the one year free tuition. if you enroll by january 31, we will pick one northern and one southern nevadan to get a year's free tuition. >> which is now, what, $6,000. >> okay. so, parents, get on it here! we have a little less than two weeks to get into that drawing for that prepaid tuition. thank you for coming. >> joe, back over to you. thank you, guys. let's check in with colin. we got a break from the wet weather and it was refreshing to have that, colin. >> nice and warm.
